Hull insurance for the boat

dizzyspots - 8-2-2017 at 03:36 PM

Liability is easy and affordable on bajabound.com...but what about hull insurance (comprehensive). My stateside policy covers US and Canadian coastal waters only. Looking for suggestions on an alternative?

Hello dizzyspots,

For hull coverage we refer people to Oversea Insurance based here in San Diego:

OK...just got off the phone with Progressive. Here's their scoop...as long as I have Mexican Liability on the boat (Bajabound) my US comp policy on the boat will cover the boat. They will cover transport of the boat back to the US and repair in the US... all for about $150 per year for everything...plus the 7-8 days of the Bajabound policy YAY!!

Wow; that would cut my premium in half since I pay almost $900/year for comp & liability through a Mexican carrier (my agent is Blue Water Marine in Newport Beach). Do you keep the boat in the US or in Mexico? I keep mine in Mulege year round so I hadn't considered using a US carrier for comp.

This might be old news but a few years ago Progressive put a clause in their policy that the boat could not be in Mexico for over 30 continuous days, (maybe it was 14, I suffer from CRS). Since I keep the boat in Baja, I dropped coverage.

Our boat resided in Marina de la Paz for 18 years. When Hurricane Marty hit it was surprising how many of the big name insurance companies found creative ways to not cover losses. Many of them advertisers in Latitude 38. For many folks it was their only asset. Our boat has been through several hurricanes and each time many insurance companies reacted in the same way. I would check with fellow cruisers for current info on payouts after a loss. Some companies were fair and even generous, others not.
