HELP! I'm driving my family nuts!!

Marie-Rose - 2-19-2005 at 10:47 AM

My family is convinced that the non-stop Mexican music that our neighbors in Todos Santos played has brainwashed me!! I find myself playing my one CD...Linda Ronstadt "Canciones de mi Padre"...over and over again...very loud!!
It just brings me back...lifts my spirits!!
Can anyone suggest some artists, CD's that are comaprable to this CD????

Lilia Downs - anything by her is outstanding. Buena Vista Social Club. Los Lobos (out of Santa Barbara). All are in there with Linda in their capacity to bring you back to Mexico. Saludos, Sara

Music to your ears!

You know now....since you have this P.C. looking at you, you are able to access international music for free. Radio. You dont need dsl to have a nive tune coming off the pc speakers. If you need some links to these international stations, let me know. I am sitting here typing, listening to a Carribean station!

My wife loves Gloria Estafan.
Even I can listen to her or Buena Vista Social Club all day.

We were in Todos Santos, sitting in the outdoor corner restaurant with the peac-cks in back listening to Gloria's new cd two years ago today. Loving life.....

Want to try something truly Mexican, deep dark ,and very profound, i suggest you get a CD of Chabela Vargas, you wont regret it.

"This is the hottest, sexiest, most golden of the gold. Vargas: honey sweet, ripping, belting, trembling, hissing between gritted teeth, growling like a savage wolf - while her fingers from across a schizophrenic yet logical abyss play in melodious counterpoint to the emotional rollercoaster of her voice.

There are places in "Macorina" where I absolutely stop breathing. Look up the words! It is also well worth reading about the real Macorina.

I ripped this CD from a friend, but it is so incredibly good, I am buying it as a mark of respect for the incomparable, beautiful Chavela Vargas. I can't wait to hear more."

Right on. I've got this album. I bought it after seeing "Frida", where the tribute to Vargas was performed by the singing of "La Llorona".

Marco Antonio Solis is recommended. His orchestration ranks with the best. No one should be without at least one album of Javier Solis, one of Mexico's musical giants of the twentieth century.

Rocio Durcal, though Spanish, sang many Mexican standards, once I started, I couldn't stop buying her albums.

These don't even begin a good Mexican list, however.

Los Lobos Greatest Hits has lots of great music on it. Their version of Sabor A Mi is our favorite.

listen to their version of standard "Malegueyna" (sorry, too early to look up the correct sp) version on Kill Bill soundtrack. Also all the Robert Rodriguez' movie soundtracks, many scored by the director himself, a multi talent for sure.
not baja or even Mexican but i sure like the Gypsy Kings' guitar work. I think they're Basques?

Right on the nail Jefe, thats old time Baja music at its best, me and my mom used to take the bus down every year from Tijuana to Insurgentes to visit my grandparents, and i remember the bus drivers would always put los Panchos music right at sunrise, that memory of sunrise while driving past Mulege at 5:00am and seeing all the people sleeping in the roofs while hearing Los Panchos is imbeeded deep in my mind.
