Anyone on here remember SkiBaja aka JR Baja?

JZ - 8-22-2017 at 10:35 PM

He was the all time greatest poster on Baja Nomads.

Ripped Sun Boy aka DK to shreds for days on end.

gnukid - 8-22-2017 at 10:47 PM

As a nomad, I would never put one Nomad above another as all time greatest poster. JR was a nice person equal to others.

Typical sentiment of parents who raised millennials and gave them all those participation trophies.

Competition breeds success, plus JR wasn't nice, and I think he died before you even joined the board.

Yes, I remember him well. He was a prolific poster and very hard on folks in general. I understood that in person he was just great!!! and died way too early.

rts551 - 8-23-2017 at 08:29 AM

Excellent poster.. and a wealth of information. He knew when to spot a chicken near the coop.

David K - 8-23-2017 at 08:57 AM

JR and I were friends... He admitted to me it was all in good fun to get a rise out of the drama queens here.
He enjoyed collecting Baja books and had me come over to his and Carol's place south of Rosarito (oh, it was a gated 'gringo' compound of the kind he poo pooed publically here).
Yes, we battled a bit on Nomad for show, but in person, we had a nice party at his place (where we all met Antonio 'Baja Cactus' and family in 2004), and I delivered clothes and mosquito spray for him to distribute to areas in need.

Someone took a photo of JR and I at his place, here eating and drinking...

JR began using bamboo and promoted it as construction material...

A month later was the Baja Cactus Cultural Fiesta in Tijuana...

The Private screening of 'Bajo California' in CECUT's theatre. Mexico Ted has a front row seat and J.R. and Herb are right behind. Hear Ted on Baja Talk Radio!

The photo is blurred that I took, but that is JR having a good laugh with amigo Herb (who also is no longer with us).

La Barca, just north of where the Titanic was filmed. JR worked on the set and had several props for yard decoration.

Supreme Schadenfreude .................

tiotomasbcs - 8-25-2017 at 11:11 AM

Wow! That was some great reading..blast from the past. JR sounded like he enjoyed a little ...heckling? I have seen a few long timers disappear like DavidE, the Loreto Texan Skeet!, Mike Odell. Some just choose not to get into the dogfight I think. I would have loved to meet Jimmy Smith the Grinnin Gargoyle. Over a cold beer we used to talk about compiling some stories about the offbeat characters here in Todos Santos! Thanks for sharing. Tio Tomas

DENNIS - 8-25-2017 at 12:43 PM

I'm afraid to inquire about Skeet, but David Eidell shoots me an email from time to time.
Baja Bernie? Miss him a lot.

Some beings have greater value after they're DEAD.

Bacon, Ribs, Steak, etc. are proof of that.

It does seem to be true that "remembrance" raises their stature.

Many would agree that I may turn out to be an exception to that rule.

He wasn't around long and lost interest in this forum in a short time.

He wasn't a happy camper.

The Dead Letter Box

MrBillM - 8-27-2017 at 05:46 PM

We all have our memories.

Sometimes, looking back on adversaries dead is just compensation for dealing with them alive.

I fondly look back on making jokes (sometimes not well-received) when a co-worker met an untimely end.

There was this one (40-year old) Union Steward at GTE who had a "Head-On" coming home from the Colorado River ..................

THAT was Schadenfreude at its best.

Good for many inappropriate mirthful moments.

My last Ex-Wife also lost a similar Windshield encounter a few years back. Scrambled Skull. Son had to pull the plug.

Better later than never, I guess.

tiotomasbcs - 8-27-2017 at 06:09 PM

And you, Amigo?! You thot Las tunas was your spot. You landed in Pesky ... b-tch about fishing but love Fireworks and a big Conflagracion! You really could never surf but admire your effort. San Clemente. Hope they build a Trailer Park next door! Baja Beans for entertainment? $10 chocale cake and a Latte. See Ya. Happy Camper. BS. Tio

Dead Men DO Tell Tales

MrBillM - 8-28-2017 at 09:12 AM

Or, at least, their tales are retold.

Selectively.

I've found that the often-offered advice ..................... "If you can't say something GOOD [regarding the Dead], you should say nothing" simply tends to convey an inaccurate and unjustified remembrance.

Balance is Better.

Why would you post something like this? Even if it is true, why would you post something like this in a public forum. I honestly don't get it.

We were friends. Some of the stuff on Nomad did irritate me, but JR thought it was funny how he got so much drama out of some of you here... (it is still working for you). He told me so one of the several times I was invited to his and Carols' home. Let JR rest.

I will never forget JR
He was a character for sure but a straight forward and honest guy who LOVED Baja and it's people.
And he really did actually SKI in Baja.
We had lots of adventures.
He had just bought a place in San Bartolo that he had great plans for just before he passed.
I miss him dearly and often wonder how Carol is doing.
RIP dear friend
Barb

Maderita - 9-1-2017 at 01:44 PM

Did he snow ski in Baja? Just curious because I put together a ski mountaineering trip in the Sierra San Pedro Martir in the 1970s.

David K - 9-1-2017 at 01:49 PM

Thank you, Barb for saying those nice things about our friend JR! I chose to remember the good times and not the drama stuff of any online fighting. I hope the bamboo project has not died with JR.

As for Ski Baja... yes, see his avatar photo of JR on skis in the San Pedro Martir: http://forums.bajanomad.com/viewthread.php?tid=2274#pid14522

Nothing has changed.

vgabndo - 9-1-2017 at 01:53 PM

I just dropped in more than two years after my last post, and NOTHING has changed. The same people slinging the same insults. It is one of the reasons I moved back to California. I can't wait for the brain dead former Marine to turn a few dozen insulting lies into GIFs denigrating my military service because I've had the temerity to speak.

I ended up buying a couple of windows from the Titanic set that JR rescued and took down to his place in San Bartolo, actually located on the Bainoro Ranch up the arroyo from town. When JR died, Carol came down and took what she wanted and left the rest to the ranch family he was leasing land from to build his Bamboo Mansion. As I am friends of the ranchers and they were looking to pick up some money, I offered to take two windows off their hands after first trying to find them a buyer on the Internet. Plan to incorporate them into an apartment we will eventually build at our place in La Paz.

JR was a lot like my friend David K in that both are/were about Baja and could really get under some peoples' skin but are/were really easy to like in person and excellent company.

More than 2 years and you insult the nomads that are slinging insults and denigrate another former Marine. You can do better, Perry.

We (you and I) and other Marines served with honor and no one can take that away.

Hope you will continue to speak up and contribute to this forum. I'm convinced you have much to share.
