Are any of these yellowish with a red tint - white muzzle chest and under body - butter scotch eyes ?
Isn't that sort of your basic coyote coloration?

I saw a coyote last winter in the outer areas around Bahia Asuncion several times (inland by dump, south several miles of town along beach, and north
of town several miles on road to San Roque). He was the biggest coyote I have ever seen (and that's a lot of them). He was a darker brown colour than
any other Baja coyote I have seen and looking VERY healthy...as many are skinny and "mangey".
Maybe a cross breed....doubtful it was a wolf as someone suggested...
Just felt blessed to see him several times.

I'll second that, Ged, we spotted El Coyote Gigante once in the same area and had to do a double take. Freaking enormous. Still had the coyote head

Dumps are notorious near communities for more than just dumping trash, as in unwanted pets, as well as a feeding ground for stray dogs of all breeds.
Chances are Coyote Gigante could be a mix-breed (twiced-removed on his mother's side, kinda like Texas), and yes, definitely well-fed if near a

More likely just well-fed and/or a cross-breed....head shape and size lead me to stay with coyote ID....a friend riding with me took a pic of this guy

Here is that coyote south of Bahia Asuncion...I first noticed him headed southward on the beach at cliff base...I slowed down to let him get ahead as
I was aware that he heard our two bikes...and suddenly he was up the bank and crossed our path...

Nice pic, Ged! They always manage to slink away before I can grab my camera.
As a wildlife biologist, based on the head/ears/face proportions, what I saw out there was a large coyote.
Since he wasn't kind enough to walk up and present a leg for a blood sample, I can't say for sure that he didn't have a big feral dog for a grandaddy
or a grey wolf for a great-great-grandma... The latter would be unlikely, since Mexican grey wolves are highly endangered. Despite reintroduction and

i am always surprised about how few coyotes i see here in bcs. i think san diego county has more than all south baja. much fewer rabbits/hares than i
would expect too.
