One year before the highway?

In October 1972, the pavement south of Ensenada was between Colonia Guerrero and San Quintin and the pavement north from La Paz was between Santa Rosalia and San Ignacio.

Looks like an off-road racer, maybe pre-running the 1000 (which was in November). That year, it started in Mexicali (first time) then crossed over to the Pacific via Valle de Trinidad or Mike's Sky Rancho (racer's option) and back on the original route of the previous years. A chubasco destroyed the road south of Puertecitos forcing the change from just going south... and making the race longer than before.

Stay tuned and I'll post the article.

ah! the olden days!
No satellite GPS, had to use those complicated maps and compasses; no SPOT emergency beacon to send help when stubbed toe or low on gin; no cell phone to call mommy; no google to ask how to tie a knot; no AC in our cars; no facebook to share our every snapshot and inane thoughts; and smoking was good for you!

:lol::lol:

I'm with you, goat. On remote roads I really like asking folks for directions. I've met the most wonderful people that way.

My Son still has a Baja-Bug like that one, tricked out for racing tho he never did that. It's a wonderful little vehicle, but really noisy and very dusty inside! He runs around the Eastern Sierra/Owens Valley/Death Valley in it. LOL

I like the caption under the photo: "One of a hardy band who delight in their own discomfort, he threaded the peninsula in an open jeep."
