BajaNomad

Another new guy

Happy Thanksgiving Nomads! I have been reading the forum for quite a while and wanted to get my first post in without posing any questions. I am planning a trip down with a few friends and three vehicles in March. I am excited to be going back to Baja. I haven't been there since my parents used to take me down there for beach camping vacations when I was a child. Our current plan is to enter at either San Luis Rio Colorado or Los Algodones and then make our way leisurely down the gulf side and over to Todos Santos to meet the girlfriends flying in for a week. From there we'll make our way leisurely back up the Pacific coast for a while before crossing back over to return to the US. So far I have found the answers to all of my questions, and more, searching through the many posts, answers to others' questions and trip reports. I am grateful for this awesome resource and community and perhaps I'll run into one or two of you in March.

Regards,
Abel

Welcome Abel!

Thank you Shari and David. I have to admit that the all of the great stories on the forum are giving me a bit of Baja fever. I may have to go down earlier than March for reconnaissance prior to the big trip.

I live in Yuma. If you choose to cross as mentioned be prepared to get lost. The net work of unsigned farm roads crisscrossing canals and irrigation ditches is formidable. Local knowledge only. Even in Yuma it's daunting. We have almost 500 miles of canals and roads with names like 3E and 15E. It's frustrating at times. I highly reccomend the old crossing in Mexicali. Very straight forward. Pleasant and polite customs inspectors. Plus the epicurean delights of Mexicali itself. This is a great place to get lost in. You never know what you'll discover. Leave the farms to the farmers. They bring the food to you.
Vaya con dios mi amigo.

Welcome to Nomads, will you be surfing on your trip?

Abel.Villesca - 11-23-2017 at 09:05 PM

I am a desert rat MMc, and have not spent enough leisure time near the ocean to learn how. Maybe one of these days if I make it to Baja frequently in the future. It looks like a lot of fun! Thanks for the welcome!

For several years now we have crossed at San Luis, There is now a bypass around Yuma on the east side I95 takes you around town and away from all the farm country south of Yuma... Easy route off of Interstate 8 ,,,,

Drops you in San Luis about 2 or 3 blocks from the border entrance. once you cross into Mex. you go one block and make a right. takes you right onto the toll road Mex 2. about 40 miles to Mex 5 south of Mexicali... then head south to San Felipe... easy peasy for us every time.
up to this point no hassles, and pretty good hiway..

Baja has a lot of desert to rat around in... you'll have a great time.

Two week countdown for my small group. I haven't been in Baja since I was a child and vacationing (in the back of a two wheel drive pickup) with my parents. Needless to say I am excited to return as an adult. I want to thank you all once again for sharing lots of information and inspiration via this forum.
