Most times a DL works just fine, but, the law is that you need "proof of citizenship" i.e. birth cert. , passport, voter registration......with
picture ID such as a DL.......they are talking more and more about having a passport....so far it hasn't happend. But why that the risk of being
detained?

Leaving a few weeks ago through the Mexicali gates, my wify (common) was asked for her "green card" and passport. She is a German Citizen. Be prepared

You should not leave the United States without a passport or some PROOF that you are an American.
Mexico requires this if you get their FM-T visa (tourist card), which you need to travel south of the border region or stay in Mexico over 72 hours.
Staying in the border region, for less than 3 days, your driver's license and ability to answer questions to U.S. officers will be enough...
Certified birth certificate copies are available online and only take a few days to get, from the county you were born in. Use your search engine. I
got mine from Orange County and my son's from San Diego County in about 3 days... only about $15 I think.

It is a legal document, to have a Notarized letter with statements from three persons stating that you are an American Citizen. Ask a Legal clinic to
do this. I had to do this some years ago when I was unable to get my birth certificate in time for a trans Atlantic. Do ask a legal clinic, dont take

If you are a registered voter, ask the registrar of voters if they will give you a certificate of registration. That ought to do it.

I took the BUS to TIJUANA from ORANGE COUNTY last week to visit my dentist again .....
I noticed as I walked back into the US that I had forgotten my DRIVERS LICENSE ..... ... I thought that this is going to be good ......
I told the INSPECTOR what I had crossed the border for and that I did not have my ID .....
She looked at me and said Ok ..... NEXT ....
It must have been the BLUE EYES ...

first, last year i needed a b.c. and got it overnighted via ups for a fee-$25 i think it was.
second, when the guy or gal outside the supermarket gets someone to register to vote, they ask for no idendification. is there really some magic that
proves john q. public is a CITIZEN? just wondering...

I assume,.... I would think that when "Mr. Supermarket register" takes your application back you are checked out to make sure you are eligible to
vote. Not fool-proof of course, but still "proof of citizenship" which last I know was accepted for entry in to the US.
the "supermarket registrar" cares not if your are really a citizen

The Secretary of State will confirm voter registration is valid or not. "Mr. Supermarket register" takes your application to their party office, turns
in the list he/she collected, gets paid for a day?s work. "Mr. Supermarket has zero to do with anything.
