Baja Bernie - 9-9-2003 at 05:12 PM

Hola,
Not really sure how many of you are aware that Don Jimmy is in the VA Hospital in LaJolla undergoing further tests on his lungs after a relapse from his problem a month ago. Nothing definite yet. I visited with him yesterday and today and he is thriving on the good vibes he is receiving from Chuck Potter, Desert Bull, Wild Bill and a true Baja Lady and his own private nurse ('Char'). I felt honored to finally get to meet these Baja Folks. He is in 3north pod B room 3354.
Like I said he is feeding off the vibes he is getting so drop by and see him or give him a call at 1-858-552-8585 ext 3354. Looks like he will be there through this next weekend.

Desertbull - 9-9-2003 at 10:18 PM

Bernie hit the nail on the head. It was a nice visit with Jimmy, Bernie, Chuck and Char as he told stories and listened to some others from us. And wow, Char, a good family friend and private nurse that came up with him from Los Barriles, is taking great care of Jimmy in the hospital. Thanks to great people like Bernie, Chuck, Dave and especially Char, Jimmy is sure to make it out of this predicament in good shape.

Talked to Jimmy earlier today (not on the number listed), and he sounded good and full of fight! Get well Amigo!!!

Fisheater - 9-10-2003 at 07:45 AM

You can read a monthly article by Jimmy at www.baja.net Great site and great people. Get well Jimmy!

JIMMY'S NO.

capt. mike - 9-10-2003 at 08:10 AM

not sure what you mean, "not on that no."
is it wrong? what is the right one? is it a secret??

David K - 9-10-2003 at 05:23 PM

Sorry Mike, please call me. I don't think a private hospital room number should be posted. After I tried the number Bernie posted, an amigo (who also is a personal friend of Jimmy) gave me a better number.

capn.sharky - 9-10-2003 at 10:36 PM

Bernie---I just got out of the VA in La Jolla. They are great and Jimmy will soon be feeling better. They did an open heart surgery on me and I left in four days. The care there is better than in a private hospital. I hope Jimmy will get well soon. I will say the food isn't great, but the price is sure good. God, these golden years aren't what they are cracked up to be. Sharky:(

Bedman - 9-10-2003 at 11:36 PM

I don't know how it works in your neck of the woods Fisheater.

A private room number really shouldn't be posted on the internet. Especially when you can dial direct into the room of a convalescing person at any time of the day or night.

I'll be pleased if Jimmy gets a copt of this email.

Get Well Jimmy!! Get out of that Horspistol and get some Real food!!

As always

Don Jimmy update!

capt. mike - 9-11-2003 at 08:01 AM

i spent some time with Jimmy last night along with his buddies Dave "big" Deal and Chuck Potter and Charlene from Los Barilles. He's in good spirits, had some ribald comments. He won't be going home soon however as they are seriously needing to watch him for several weeks. Maybe before Dec but Quien Sabes? anyway we are looking to find, borrow, beg or steal a small travel trailer - 12 to 18 ft - for him to stay in that can be umbillicled at Dave Deal's casa as Dave will take him to V.A. for his periodic treatments. Any one that can help with this notify any of the admin at www.baja.net . better than having to just hang at V.A.

Took him a "Screaming Airlines" T and a fine cigar but the cigar a no-no so it went to Dave!

Please donate if you can a little to his "return flight to home" costs c/o www.baja.net as posted by WB and DB. Even a buck or 5 here and there will add up fast. Gotta keep don Jimmy Writin' and rockin'!

Also David, understand your point. thx for clarifying

Baja Bernie - 9-11-2003 at 07:38 PM

David K and others,
I stand corrected and chastised. About the phone number, I was most interested in getting his friends aware of his situation and NEVER considered that anyone on the board would stoop to doing what was suggested.
Guess I am not paranoid enought. I just sent most of you a private update his condition.

Los Pateticos - 9-11-2003 at 08:28 PM

Capt. Mike,

The flying sam that you are, it seems more than appropriate for you to be the one to give Don Jimmy a lift home. His home isn't that much farther than Mulege. If he's going to be in the states for a while, maybe you'll have a charter heading his direction when the time comes for him to be released from the horsepital? Sounds like good sense to me and save Jimmy some dough at the same time.

Bedman - 9-11-2003 at 08:39 PM

I would hate to think that someone on the Nomad board would or could make any type of harassing phone calls But.........

We're not the only ones that read the board.

Baja Bernie - 9-12-2003 at 11:37 AM

Captain Mike,
I was up at the hospital with a dozen emails for him this morning and he really seems to enjoy hearing from the good people. Chuck and Char relieved me at 10am and I'm off to Baja as soon as I close down.

I visited Jimmy yesterday at the VA Hospital in La Jolla. He faces some significant challenges, but seems to be in pretty good spirits. I did print the posts in this thread and took them to him.

Capt Mike: I'd like to discuss Jimmy's travel arrangements with you. Please email me at dwhite@whitenoonoliver.com. Thanks.

VA is very quiet on Sundays and the Don seemed happy for us to interrupt his lunch. He's eatin good and breathin fair. Will be needin our prayers for quite a while.

Good friends

Msal - 9-14-2003 at 08:43 PM

Debra - 9-15-2003 at 03:26 PM

I wondered how long it would take for someone to mention that you don't normally inhale cigars.....but, once they are lit, the smoke gets in the lungs just the same. BTW, I'm one of those with the nasty Cig habit, and enjoy the smell of a good Cigar also (bad girl, I know ) :)

Skeet/Loreto - 9-15-2003 at 03:57 PM

Debra. I too did at one time enjoy the good Cubans but Alas Asthma came a long and I switched to Cope. However because I enjoyed Virginia's sweet kisses I have been away from the habit for 6 months. Please enjoy a good Cigar for me. Skeet/Loreto

Don Jimmy Update

Baja Bernie - 9-15-2003 at 08:35 PM

My wife, Lu Ann, and I visited with Don Jimmy and Chuck Potter this afternoon. Jimmy seems to breathing much easier and has his normal, positive, approach to what life brings. He is now looking at this health problem as a new adventure in his life. Sally had forwarded me a bunch of emails from his friends, one from Alaska, and both he and Chuck read them all with much gusto. This support from all of you is what is keeping this wonderful man going. So if you want you can send me your emails for Don Jimmy and I will deliever them within a day--bernieswaim@caballeropublishing.com
It only takes a couple of seconds and if you could see the smiles that they generate you would be proud. As I have said "Baja is friends helping friends!"

Don Jimmy

Mike Humfreville - 9-15-2003 at 09:48 PM

Time for you to get better young man. You've been outta Baja too long and need a "fix." We'll never forget earlier this year when Debra, Mary Ann and I dropped into the northern end of Los Barriles and asked a bunch of young folks working alongside the road if they knew you. I knew they wouldn't because there was such an age difference. WRONG! They simultaneously shouted instructions to your home, over two miles away. Now that's recognition.

Get well soon. Get back on your feet and put pencil to paper or fingers to keyboard. You have a vast set of friends that miss you and your stories very much.

Mike and Mary Ann

Good " bad" girls

capt. mike - 9-16-2003 at 06:02 AM

Debra - ya has ta know i luv bad girls too!!

Eli - 9-16-2003 at 09:07 AM

Bernie, sure was good to hear about your visit with Pop. I concur with what a short letter can do towards making Pop's day sing a little sweeter. And I do thank You Bernie from the bottom of my heart for making sure the Ol Man gets those letters. I am so glad to hear from him about Yours and others who are visiting him. He certainly is a wealthy when it comes to people that Love him.

Ay, Capt. Miguel & Debra, I too love a good cigar. Alas, I am grounded, cause I can't resist inhaling and than before you know it, I'm wanting a dagome cig. Sure do miss um, sure glad I quit. Still, I can even get enjoyment from sniffing an unlit cigar, and I have been known to sit up wind from someone smoking a cigarette, sigh............. no mas for me.

tobacco este mi veduras favoritas!

capt. mike - 9-16-2003 at 12:40 PM

ahhhh, that gooood aroma! i'm going to go light one up after lunch, a short robusto, 4.5 X 50..... i agree, these are what got me off Cigs, i inhale just a bit but only smoke 1 a day usually, maybe 2 on a weekend. all things are ok in my book if done in moderation. life is short man, have dessert 1st!!

I'm thinking I shouldn't have mentioned the

Debra - 9-16-2003 at 12:49 PM

questionable judgement of bringing Jimmy a cigar.......now it's turned this thread into the joys of them, I'm worried someone might print this out for him and before we know it he'll go AWOL and find himself a stoggie! DON'T DO IT JIMMY! WE LUV YA AND WANT TO SEE YOU AROUND FOR A LONG, LONG TIME!!!:):o:)

Capitano.....I agree, moderation is the key, and anything is okay if done in moderation, (well, most things anyway) however I don't or can't smoke in moderation, I'm an addict, and so is Jimmy (excuse me while I light up) okay back,....I wish I could be like others, my husband included, that only have a cig while having a beer.

How about in honor of Jimmy, and support for him, we start a thread (from the lucky reformed ones) on how they quit and ideas for those of us that wish we could? Who will go first to help us out of our life of excess and addiction?

[Edited on 9-16-2003 by Debra]

Eli - 9-16-2003 at 01:35 PM

Debra & Capt. Miguel, Just read your last comments on this tread to Pop. He was still laughing when I hung up the phone. I figured right when I guessed your dialog would tickle his funny bone, it certainly did.

Dad sounded very good today. I don't have illusions that we are out of the weeds, but between the extra oxygen and some suped up antibiotics and everyone's concern and good wishes, he is feeling pretty darn frisky about now.

Char and Chuck are there with him every day, Bernie checks in real regular too. Dave Deal has been by to see him and lord knows who ever else. In fin, we are a Social Animal and if ever there was a communicator that loved to enter-react, it's the Ol Man.

Ah well, we shall see what tomorrow brings, at least today sounds like it's a good one.

Debra - 9-16-2003 at 03:31 PM

Elis.......laughter is the best medicine GOOOOOOOOO JIMMY!!!!!!!!!!!

jimmy update 09/18/03

capt. mike - 9-18-2003 at 11:32 AM

ok - am back, jimmy looking and feeling pretty good, he's optimistic - what strength and will the hombre has!!
they are going to begin asap a rigorous round of treatment that goes for 10 days or so. then the doc will release him to go south/home, he will be watched closely and if needed he can return to VA SD anytime within the next year for add'l treatment (if needed) - all depends on how it/he responds. He has to stay on oxy though, and that could be for the long haul, we need to get him a used oxy gen so he can plug in and not have to switch bottles, he knows of one he can get from Bobby Van Wormer - maybe it will be a gift, i don't know - speaking of that famous family, Steve Van wormer showed up and really made Jimmy's day - was not expected, he's a great guy too.
Now - plan change - doc prohibits jimmy from airplane travel - comm'l, private, any kind - no can do, i even have an O2 bottle for him i use for IFR altitudes but still even with that doc says no....so the flight fund is now a road fund - gas, hotels food etc, and whatever is left can go for meds - they are going to stock him for the ride south from VA. he is moving to another wing for treatment - not sure where - he says all amigos come visit - i can tell you the stories were flowing last night - the guy is amazing, oh... and he's got his daytimer back. more later. lastly - we are thinking of meeting him in mulege for a BBQ during his haul south, anyone in the area then - i'll post the schedule when we know it - is invited, he has many friends in that area, sort of a 1/2 way home celebration. I plan to go and may have some seats avail - e me on that. adios.

I called Jimmy yesterday, and he is sounding great... very optimistic!
Expects to be here about 2 weeks before returning to Los Barriles.

I am still not totally recovered from my walking pnemonia, so I had to decline Jim's invitation for a visit.

I think it's wonderful that Baja Nomad is providing a wireless Internet laptop for Jimmy to use in the hospital!

Don Jimmy

Baja Bernie - 9-22-2003 at 08:52 PM

Wandered up to the VA this day to see the Don. He was very animinated as he spoke of some guy named Means (?) and his four kids who visited him this weekend. Jimmy said that he really enjoyed the visit with a very nice man and his kids--the kids made him homesick.
Jimmy's private and personal Angel arranged a Buffet right in the hospital and everyone, including the staff, really enjoyed the feast.
Now I remember his first name is Doug and the Don blessed him with "he is an okay guy!" So now that the Don has spoken yea must all heed--Doug and his kids are "A Okay."

can we get word to Jimmy the status

capt. mike - 9-23-2003 at 09:14 AM

of his family post Marty??

am sure there is much concern on his part, he mentioned that last week when i was there and Marty was still ways off.

can we get a general report on los barilles?

Paulina & Dern,

I was just talking with Don Jimmy about plans for the trip South. He sounds real good today, and ready to come on home, ah yes, hope springs eternal.

Present plan is to leave Tuesday. And well, with checking out of hospital and checking in at the boarder, doesn?t look like they are going to get too far on down the road that first day and taking you up on the offer for the use of the guest house for the first night?s stay could be real handy if it is still a viable for you? I tried to e-mail you to get us connected, but alas I am not on my computer and I got bumped, so I am hoping you will read this and respond, or someone else will pick it up and some how get the message to you.

Baja Bernie - 10-12-2003 at 06:33 PM

Eli,
Got to the hospital today just after he hung up from talking to you. He really is ready to be gone.
Do you guys remember how last May we all automatically started a "Jimmy Sighting" post to track his travels to and from the VA and Keri's booksigning so that Lupe and Sally were kept informed about his progress--WHY DON't WE START ONE FROM ABOUT NOON next Tuesday (10-14-03) and follow him and Char south so that we all will know how things are going.
The couple who offered to give him shelter on the first night could be the first to post. WHAT DO YOU THINK???
Oh! Don Jimmy is aware that there have been almost 2,000 hits on this thread from his friends and it puts a rather large smile on his face.
Baja IS people helping people!
