Q's on upcoming Baja trip.....

...heading down early january,,, got a few Q's.
Appreciate updates since my last trip 4 years ago....

1...how's the road between TJ and Ensenada,, what's the more direct route,, how much time to allow?

2... everything still good with the Hotspring above Maneandro?

3... from the Currency thread,, it sounds like I shouldn't expect to exchange US cash anywhere down Baja,, but Credit, Debit withdrawals should be alright at banks,, correct?

4... Fuel Cost? What's the going rate for 87octane fuel these days?

#1. Road is great. TJ to Ensenada on the toll road. Some construction north of the Ensenada toll booth (San Miguel)

#2. Yup, still there, still hot

#3. Yes. Several banks with ATM's in the Wal-Mart shopping center. Also the BanaMex ATM in Costco

#4. About 16 pesos, plus some change per liter

The gas stations always have a good exchange rate, at least up north. I generally take advantage of that and pay with a C note and get pesos in cambio so I don't have to carry a War And Peace size wad of pesos. Down south you get dinged a little but gas stations still will have the best X rate around.

Be able to do some math in your head real quick or you will pay the gringo tax, but if they get called on it they will show you their math and you can call BS to get the correct rate.

Nice,, that'll make a perfect first day,, SanD down to Ensenada for a big prawn lunch at the Fish Market,, stop for some supplies in Maneandro,, then wash the tires nice on the way into the Hotsprings. A great way to unwind and get on Baja time after the trek from Canuckistan.

...the GF will fly into SanD on jan 12,,, so we should be rolling into Ensenada on the 13th.

Just booked 2 round trip flights for the GF... Jan12 to sanD,, then return from Loreto,,, then feb 10 into SJD,then return to Loreto-vancouver ., so she'll get to see all of baja over 2 trips,,, and I'll spend 2-3 weeks in the Mulege, Loreto, San Nicholas region,,, lotsa sailing ,kayaking, kiting in my favorite places :tumble:

The GF usually does the all-inclusive form of travel, but has enjoyed van camping over the past 1 1/2 years... now she'll get to see the 'other', -real- Baja. Costwise, the flights work out to half cost of one week at an all inclusive! :wow:

It was a bit more in Baja Sur after they changed the price controls. Baja Sur was in August, so not really recent.

Sounds like you are staying in the border zone (not beyond Maneadero)?

It was 16.29/L at Diaz Ordaz (town south of Colonet) last October
(and 16.39/L at El Rosario).

17.40 pesos/dollar was the exchange at the border.
16.29x3.785=61.65 pesos/gallon
61.65/17.40=$3.54 dollars/gallon

Average down the coast is $2.70,,, it's only social where it's over 2.80. ;:wow:
