Here is my first draft of the next map on my list... Did I get the names right? ;)

Edit... second draft with thanks to Bob & Susan for the correction of Los to Dos!

Good question Bob.
I checked my notes, and I did write Los Amigos... I think I took a photo of the sign... I will check. The Almanac does show it as Dos.

Edit: Sign was in sad shape, but I do think it is Dos. So, I will fix, thank you!

It is Dos Amigos, DK

Bob and Susan - 1-15-2018 at 02:21 PM

you should put the prison in there...its quite a landmark AND a gift shop for the curios

David K - 1-15-2018 at 02:34 PM

While I have read about the prison gifts for sale here on Nomad, I slowly passed the entrance road and saw nothing inviting tourists to drive in. It could be added in the future, no problem.

bajaguy - 1-15-2018 at 02:46 PM

What, no indication of “Cuesta del Inferno” ??

BajaBill74 - 1-15-2018 at 03:01 PM

Driving South out of Santa Rosalia for about 2 miles there is a large modern complex on top of a hill on the left. It shows up on Google. What is it?

It's a University I believe.

Bob and Susan - 1-15-2018 at 03:39 PM

the prison gift shop has a BIG sign on the road inviting people in...i'm surprised you didn't take a tour

lots of local kids go to the university on the hill...the future

As I said, I did not see anything that looked inviting from the highway. Can you post a photo of it?

While it is very unique, I am trying to imagine what tourists on their first visit will actually want to go to a prison in Mexico with their families? Maybe after a few trips when they are ready for a new thrill? Again, if I saw that sign, I would have driven in. My thinking was maybe the gift shop was no longer open.

Hi David,

I am sorry I have not let you know how much I like the maps and I like the K markers listed. I am heading up to Sta. Rosalia tomorrow to print off the information for our fishing tournament and can check out anything you need re-verified.

For BajaBill74 I think he is talking about the newer neighborhood being built on the road out to Santa Aqueda. They advertise in town and state they have three different styles of homes available, but I have not stopped in only driven by. One thing most of them do have is a very nice view.

And also it is still Playa Dos Amigos RV park.

You take care and keep up the great work, let me know if you need anything.

KC in Mulege

PS - The College is closer to town right on the coast. The road to it cuts by the old family park/alberca (abd.) north of the "old" Federales station house (abd.) through the arroyo and up the hill.

Hope that helps.

Back in The Day you'd enter the prison courtyard with guards and haggle price with the inmates through a very high chain link fence... and I'll tell you, it makes you behave better in Baja seeing what the inside looks like. One does NOT wanna be a guest in that hotel. The gift shop makes it much more amenable to tourists, less confrontational. Great art too; I have a houseful of it, good stuff and good prices. Prolly bought 30-40 pieces over the years. Highly recommended if you like that kind of thing.

David K - 1-15-2018 at 04:43 PM

Great replies Kevin (Okie) and Buddha.

I would like a photo of that sign for the prison gift shop (if it is there) and the kilometer marker nearest it (I know I posted it on Nomad once, but double check please).

BajaOkie - 1-15-2018 at 04:47 PM

David,

Will do!

BajaBill74 - 1-15-2018 at 08:11 PM

BajaOkie, from the road I couldn't see the houses, but here they are. Driving South they are on the left of Hwy 1 and Santa Agueda is on the right. (Not in the picture.) Hwy 1 is on the left of the image.

Here are some photos of the prison. There isn't a gift shop sign on the highway, as I recall. It's word of mouth. When I went, it was all families coming to see inmates. The guard escorts you to the gift shop, which is small but with beautiful hand-crafted items. I had a good talk with an inmate there, and bought a necklace of abalone he had made.

Thanks, Gueribo... I presume photography in the prison wasn't allowed?

I also appreciate your confirmation that (still) no sign points to the gift shop or invites visitors, on the highway.

No, I don't think so. As I remember, I took nothing inside except a few pesos. You pass through a guard gate to be questioned before going inside.

BajaBlanca - 2-2-2019 at 11:21 AM

There is a sign alerting to the gift shop on highway 1, but I have never taken a photo of it.

We went to the prison years ago and it was quite overwhelming. Being Brazilian I told the guys who were trying each to yell louder than the other to hush it or Les was gonna backtrack and not let me buy a thing. They quieted down pretty quickly.

Their abalone items are GORGEOUS. I have bought some of their heart shaped abalone boxes, quite exquisite as a gift.

The sign indeed says there is a gift shop now, but we have never been there. I am sure it is less intimidating than a bunch of guys with some art and craft in their hand, yelling at you to buy from them!

windgrrl - 2-3-2019 at 05:12 PM

I can confirm a sign sighting as well.

Drove by a few hours ago and it is on the west side of the road, looks to be about about 3’x5’, weathered and peeling, but does say “Cereso....Artesanias” and some other words that were hard to d cipher at highway speed.

Cursed spell chakra ;D

Hi Larry, and thanks... but I asked the question over a year ago... :o Wish you saw this back then! ;)
I did make it for English readers of my road guide (as well as anyone on Baja Nomad, of course). The word Mission is in English, on purpose. Thank you for the Zacarías correction... I think I wrote down what was on the road sign and either there wasn't an accent on it or I blew it?

David K - 2-4-2019 at 11:20 AM

Not at all... thank you... better late than never, as they say!
