Propane Tanks

dirkster - 9-10-2003 at 12:42 PM

I've got these old style 6gal propane tanks. Is it possible to get them filled in Baja?

The "old" style filler valve is the current standard in Mexico.
If you buy a brand-new tank there, it will have the old valve.
Fortunately, they don't go along with all of the nonsense they
do up here. I've actually come out way ahead on tanks because
they are a pain for the RV places to get rid of. I filled my
pickup with 7.5 gal tanks for FREE at one such RV supply. Not
only can you fill them in Mexico, but they'll fill tanks so rusted
and beat up that I wouldn't have them.

Thanks MRBill

I've thought about collecting some extra from friends and taking them down.

Butane

Remember, tanks are actually filled with butane not propane in Mexico and some appliances may operate a little differently on this gas since the BTU values are different.

I have used numerous stoves and refrigerators in Baja over the last
22 years, including Old Servels and New Norcolds / Dometics. All were
jetted for Propane and none needed adjustment. That's not to say that
some others might, but unlikely.

Big Al, I question your statement about Butane being used in Baja. I do not think you are correct. There is no way they would have a double standard between USA and Mex. It is my understanding that the Gasoline and Propane are imported from the US along the Mexican Border.

Here what appears to be a definitive answer, provided in an article by David Eidell on Fred Metcalfe's board:

Thanks DanO, I was not aware that the two mixed.

I was not aware that they mixed the two either. When I was living in Mainland Mexico, butane was it or so it was called by everyone.
