U.S. Government shutdown and the CBP

pauldavidmena - 1-20-2018 at 12:32 PM

A previous thread on this subject was shut down due to some partisan bickering. Here is an article from a Canadian international freight service that seems reasonably accurate and unbiased.

that company says they are based out of Chicago...is that in Canada now?

pauldavidmena - 1-20-2018 at 02:17 PM

Their WikiPedia page says that they're headquartered in Toronto, but that their "US Head Office" is in Chicago. But maybe Chicago is in Canada now...

Social Security is not affected by the shut down nor is mail service nor is my pensions. They can close the border as far as I'm concerned, I don't have any trips south planned for a while. So let it rain, I don't really care.

We have so much around here to see and do. Farmers markets Saturday and Sunday. Fresh veggies for everyone. Almond trees should come into bloom next month, what a site.

Dewar’s. About the only thing in town worth stopping for (the basque food is too heavy, not my style no more). But dewar’s takes only 1/2 hour to get a sundae and buy some taffy chews, so Bakersfield is just a pit stop. I recommend the peanut butter and peppermint taffy chews.

That is awesome that social security nor mail nor pensions are affected by gvt shutdowns....why is that?

Well, there are lots of exemptions on account of being "essential for national security". This includes TSA and CBP, for example. The National Zoo and some museums will be closed. For the ones that remain open, all except essential staff will be furloughed and many will be forced to work without pay. Senators and Congressmen, on the other hand, will continue to collect their salaries, although some vow to donate their pay to charity during the impasse.

The mail.....

USPS operations will not be interrupted due to the Gov’t shutdown, & all Post Offices will remain open for business as usual. Because we are an independent entity that is funded through the sale of our products & services, & not by tax dollars, USPS will not be impacted.

SS and mail are not part of budget funding. My pensions are from private employers not government.

Note: Members of congress by law must be paid.
