Mojave Road + Wandering

Here's a trip we made on the Mojave Road, east to west; the Avi Casino/Ft Mojave to Afton Canyon/I-15. We used a somewhat liberal interpretation of the Mojave Road, taking side routes to see fun stuff. I've included a link to our couse embedded in Google Maps.

Nice photo's Stucksucks. Were the signs recommending the detour over that narrow washout area over the Piute Range still up?

It looks as though the water crossing in Afton Canyon is flowing pretty decently.

I'm leading a trip over the same on the 27th of March.

Yes, the detour was new and in place, but the "washout" wasn't that bad, especially for Baja standards. For Americans, it was horrific, an ugly lawsuit waiting to happen.

The worse thing out there is soft sand. I've driven the whole road in an expedited manor in two-wheel drive with no problems. Driving slower might have problems, but I'd still wager if you know how to drive on desert roads, you should be good. Flatten your tires and take your shovel.

Sand sections-aside, a lot of the road is hard-pack.

The main thing you need is higher clearance (leave the Model S at home).

Great timing for this thread. I have been researching the route for a future bike or jeep trip. Any GPS file you want to share? I have the normal route but it sounds like you guys saw some alternate routes.

I've been looking into doing the "Mayhew trail" that precedes the I-10 by a couple thousand years.
Want to know how to get out of SoCal after the "big one" hits

Did Mojave trail last year. Worth doing again now that I've seen Dave Barton's site. We used the Dennis Casebier book, but Dave's info is quite extensive for that area. Gotta go again. Thanks for the information!
