Reading Spark Plugs

TMW - 2-26-2018 at 04:13 PM

This came in the Thumper Talk emails I get. I thought it interesting to be able to read the various parts of a plug and tell whether it is too rich or lean or if the plug was to cold or hot etc. I've normally just read the tip.

Wow, that's cool. Very informative.

Wish I had seen that years ago when I was still jetting carbs, now with FI I just take a casual look for fun.

I was just showing a buddy how to read plugs/jetting today on his XT225. Told him to look at the base ring and low on the porcelain. Guess I had it right.

The PO on his bike had the mix needle way too rich. Reset it all and told him to get a new plug so we could start fresh. His old plug was showing a way rich mixture. Also had a bunch of crap in the bowl and we replaced the petc-ck (both feed screens missing) to stop the crap getting in.

Back in the 90s two friends and I rode from our friends home near Santa Veronica to Mike's Sky Rancho for an overnight. They were on XR600s and I on my KX500 (2 stroke). We made it in OK but coming back the next day my KX500 fouled the plug several times. It just didn't like the Mexican gas we got at Trinidad. We carried gas with us to that point. I had a couple of extra plugs but still resorted to cleaning a couple in the sand the last 20 miles. A long day.

all my motos are jetted slight bit rich. Easy starting runs cooler deep sand or running on the beach.
