Asuncion Surf

drzura - 4-17-2018 at 05:42 PM

I know that I'll find out when we arrive this summer, but, is the better surfing on the south side or north side of town? Or just depends on the swell direction?

The local kids were surfing 'north' (west) of town off the road to San Roque in September (2016).

Depends on the direction of the swell.

But not to worry as Bahia Asuncion ain't all that big and you could easily get to the best break in no time......

shari - 4-17-2018 at 06:57 PM

that is one of the many nice things about Asuncion...there are several breaks facing different directions. Will you be here for our annual Jurjos Surf Tournament? I think it will be the first weekend in August and is super fun...we are always hoping for a gringo judge to grace the panel if anyone wants to step up to the plate!!!

The tourney is fun! There are various beaches with reefs all along the coast with a few regular spots. Depending on the sand and swell it can be different weekly. You’ll figger it out. If it looks fun paddle out.

great foto of some Jurjos and you...and muchas gracias for being a patrocinador for the team.

If anyone has gear they can donate for the tournament prizes we sure could use some as it is a local tournament so no big sponsors. I can find a ride down for any donations you may be able to help out the team with.

Always glad to help out. We’ll be sending some shirts again! Anyone that can get boogies, surfboards, swimfins, wetsuits etc? The kids need an outlet towards a healthy lifestyle.

LancairDriver - 4-17-2018 at 09:54 PM

Where is the town sewer outlet? I was fishing on the beach just north of town a few years ago and a couple locals warned me away from that area but I saw no evidence of any sewage.

shari - 4-18-2018 at 07:43 AM

there is no sewage here as it is a delicate abalone area and no discharge is allowed. Did the locals say sewage? maybe they said something like... es un cochinero...which means dirty or fouled with lots of seaweed....or green water...things often get lost in translation! Maybe he was giving you fishing recommendations.

Fishing recommendations? for brown trout?

hermosok123 - 4-18-2018 at 10:13 AM

Its also a strategy used by locals in many areas to protect the spot. Not to hijack the thread I recall being told by locals in a northern ca spot that there were killer whales spotted up the coast the prior evening. Thought I was really slick as I paddled out into the empty lineup. Soon enough a pod came a cruising through all the way to The Hook. Next time I listened.

FOOD for thought.

tiotomasbcs - 4-18-2018 at 12:36 PM

When the Hurricane comes just paddle outside!

Do septics leach into the ocean water from ocean front systems?

woody with a view - 4-18-2018 at 12:56 PM

Not really. Think of all the filtration the sand and rock provides.

those of us with oceanfront homes prefer to believe that anyway, that pollution couldn't be from OUR septic system:no:

Good to hear, because in other areas of coastline, septic and cesspools pollute the coastline....especially with toxic Ammonia Nitrogen.

K38 comes to mind. Actually, the entire coast from the border to pta banda.

Paco Facullo - 4-18-2018 at 05:58 PM

I liked Taco surf way better before the condos arrived.

Well, didn't we all ........

woody with a view - 4-18-2018 at 06:22 PM

Yep. We called the right out behind it Rocketman’s cuz you had to fly to make the section. I’ve got pics of us all over outside Calafia mid 80’s when you could drive down onto the beach. Think Rancho Cota days!

no...there are no homes or anything even close to the breaks here.
the area is very well managed, monitered and protected as it is one of the few places in the world where there is still a wild abalone population and fishery.

Hmmm, the last time I was there, admittedly many years ago, the town faced the ocean and there were a few houses on the point facing the ocean. Here Maybe this will help you.... https://news.stanford.edu/news/2010/may/septic-wastewater-se...
