More Photos (Nov 18) to Guess Where in Baja They Are

David K - 5-11-2018 at 10:24 AM

The last round was fun... here are a few more:

Where in Baja (as exact as possible) are these places?

1) The oasis next to Mission Santa Gertrudis [bkbend answered]

2)

3) The Ybarra Mine Company House, El Barril. [TMW answered]

4) The playground in abandoned Guillermo Prieto, north of Vizcaíno. [Archie answered]

5)

6) Bahía Tortugas [Archie answered]

The 3rd picture down is the building in El Barril. You wrote about it in one of your trips.

Correct, the Ybarra House in El Barril.

Here is Choral Pepper's theory on the Ybarra House of El Barril:

Indeed they are! You are correct on both... Good job!

sherdoggie - 5-11-2018 at 08:23 PM

Bonus photo looks like the road from BOLA to San Fracisquito south of Las Flores.

Thanks for playing (and welcome to Nomad)!
The direction of travel is correct, but it is another road, further south. Good guess however!

bajapedro - 5-12-2018 at 06:51 AM

The first looks like it is near Mission Santa Maria.?

Thanks for playing!
The palms in this photo are mostly date palms (common at mission sites, that's a hint), with a few natives. The palms at Santa María are all native palms (not date palms). There are 26 more missions in Baja to select from!
Keep trying!

bkbend - 5-12-2018 at 08:37 AM

I'd pick Santa Gertrudis for the first one. The algae and stones look familiar.

Winner winner chicken dinner!

thebajarunner - 5-12-2018 at 01:12 PM

Bonus looks like the beginning of the road heading back toward El Arco from the "Y" coming down from LABay and branching off to San Francisquito

Greatest cardon forest on earth

You are close!

David K - 5-15-2018 at 10:15 AM

HINTS:
#2: A preserved mission site in Northern Baja California (Name the mission).

#5: Along a road out from Bahía Asunción (name the road destination).

BONUS: Short-cut road cross-connects two well-used roads (name the other roads or nearby places).

thebajarunner - 5-15-2018 at 10:51 AM

Bonus
Barril and San Francisquito

You can get to those two places from this road, and I was at El Barril earlier, but now I am driving a different direction, different road.

2nd hint... It is one of the 4 roads I have added mileage figures alongside. Is it 10.9, 11.8, 11.9, or 13.9?

David K - 5-16-2018 at 08:59 AM

Need more hints???

HINTS:
#2: A preserved mission site in Northern Baja California (Name the mission).

2nd hint: It is just 1 km. from Highway 1 and has a small museum.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
#5: Along a road out from Bahía Asunción (name the road destination).

2nd hint: It is not the road to San Roque
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
BONUS: Short-cut road cross-connects two well-used roads (name the other roads or nearby places).

2nd hint: It is a mostly north/south road and not on the AAA map.

David K - 5-17-2018 at 09:40 AM

No more guesses?

The answer to #2 is Mission San Vicente Ferrer, in San Vicente. Only 1 kilometer off Hwy. 1 in a museum-like setting as a self-guided walking tour. Worthy of a visit!

The answer to #5 is the road between Bahía Asunción and San José de Castro and the Bahía Tortugas highway.

The Bonus Photo is the road that I measured as 11.9 miles long going south from the El Arco to Punta San Francisquito road to the El Arco to Santa Gertrudis road. I hand drew it onto the AAA map I posted above.

David K - 6-10-2018 at 11:55 AM

Quick stab:
B2 Observatory
B3 the San Felipe Clam Man
B6 Percebu (I have a similar photo I took circa 2004)
The testing is thirsty work - I assume I get bonus points?

David K - 11-8-2019 at 08:58 AM

Time for hints?

B1: You can see Hwy. 1 from the cave.
B4: The name of the owner is a large Asian country.
B5: He wrote a book, published by Sunbelt, La Gringa is on the cover.
Bonus: Spanish name for a large ocean (seriously???).

Cataviña? (100% guess)

bkbend - 11-8-2019 at 09:38 AM

b1 catavina painted cave
b4 China's (DEP) (her daughter is now making the same good stuff)
b5 Mike Humphreyville (DEP)
bonus The case price increased 30-40 pesos since last spring.

David K - 11-8-2019 at 10:03 AM

YES... Jim got China (Chee-nah) and Cataviña painted cave named and BK agreed plus correctly answered the others, both L.A. Bay related (China's Taco Stand, and our friend Mike Humfreville who is buried at the L.A. Bay cemetery).

Nobody dared to say the name, "Pacifico"?

queseyo - 11-8-2019 at 01:15 PM

The old swimming pool/resort at Primer Agua on the way up to Cañon Misterioso...... great spots to hike just outside LTO. The wife brought home a piece of the pool.

Great job! Also down-arroyo, there's some fun slot canyons worth exploring.

Nikno - 11-8-2019 at 02:04 PM

Very cool! Can you be more specific about where this is and how to find it? Is it near the turn off to Puerto Escondido?

Nikno - 11-8-2019 at 02:58 PM

I found it. Turn off is at the power substation about 3 miles south of Loreto. The Primer Agua Oasis sign can be seen from street view. Follow the road up, ruins are on the side of the arroyo about 1.5 miles up.

Yes! The road to Primer Agua is next to an electrical substation, on Hwy 1, 4.07km south of the road to San Javier.

The road is scenic and with some steep grades.

When you get to the old guard shack and sign, turn left and follow the road to the parking area. 4x4 on this part of the road might be helpful.

Nikno - 11-8-2019 at 05:04 PM

Awesome! Thank you. I love abandoned stuff. I will check it out next time I'm in Loreto. Looks like there are some swimming holes up that arroyo as well.

More? Why not! Unusual images from Baja:

Yes and Yes.
That is Mike McMahan who found a torpedo on Malarrimo Beach. He created the Baja wall maps of the late 1960s to the 1990s and wrote There It Is: Baja! in 1973. It was republished in 1983 under the new title, My Adventures in Baja.

David K - 11-24-2019 at 01:36 PM

OK, no players since Pacifico guessed correctly #1 & #6.

HINTS and then the answers, soon...

#2 Photo was taken by Alejandra de Baja on an island in the gulf.
#3 Photo from ~17 years ago, near La Paz by a mine.
#4 A famous schoolhouse but taken from above. [El Mármol, answered by Larry]
#5 An old mine from around WWII.

#4 El Marmol, the hint keyed my memory. Never seen it from that angle.

The final answers:

#2 is Isla San José and the animal is a babisuri (ring-tailed cat).

#3 is near San Juan de la Costa and was called The Glowing Green Man.

#5 is the sulfur mine, 22 miles south of San Felipe on the Old Puertecitos Road.

bkbend - 11-26-2019 at 05:58 PM

Crap, I've been to 4 & 5 but they didn't register when I saw them. When I went to the sulfur mine I was wearing sandals and shortly after that trip I had to take a flight for work. I always wore sandals flying to make it easier to remove the shoes for the inspection and they just happened to have a new piece of equipment they were training on, an explosives detector which they sent my sandals through. Ding, ding, ding the red lights came on. I explained where I'd been recently and fortunately it's small airport and I knew both the armed officer and the TSA inspector so I was able to board without any further delay.

David K - 11-26-2019 at 06:05 PM

Yes, as sulfur is a major ingredient in gunpowder. I remember you posting the story here.
