Memorial Day Weekend, where to? A look back...

David K - 5-24-2018 at 05:37 PM

Please share where you plan on going.:bounce::biggrin:

I just realized we have a three-day weekend and traditionally, we go to Baja... often to Shell Island (although it is still a little too cool for our liking)!

This year, we are going to Nevada and stay at the in-laws for the weekend. I have a great mother-in-law, so no typical issues, at all!

As for the next Baja trip...

July 4th is on a Wednesday this year, so no good for a 3-day weekend then... leaving Labor Day as our final chance for a summer Baja Beach get-away. We just had a new grandson born, so Baja Angel used her vacation time to help our daughter Amber for two weeks. Last year, I spent so much time in Baja, I got my batteries well charged plus working on the road guide after!

Here is a look back to my first Memorial Day weekend with Baja Angel. See how long before you can guess where I took her, in 2005:
Can you name the locations?

1)

2) Answered: La Lobera

3) Answered: La Lobera

4)

5) Answered: Mama Espinoza's, El Rosario

6) Answered: Museum in El Rosario de Abajo

Hint: 2 & 3 are the same location and 4 & 5 are, too. Be EXACT, if you can!
2nd Hint, all were taken on the same trip in the same area and are described on my May 2005 Trip page at VivaBaja.com

2 & 3 are indeed at La Lobera, yes!
#5 is at Mama Espinoza's, we had breakfast with Antonio (BajaCactus), his wife and their baby (Little Lorenia).

#6 is at the El Rosario Community Museum, located in the old school building in the sister town of Rosario de Abajo, 2 miles from Mama Espinoza's down the river valley on the opposite side. That is Antonio pointing to a mention of his family in the museum.

Are you (or anyone else reading) going to Baja this weekend?

Alas, no Baja for me this weekend (but, I did reflect on how I miss Baja this morning as I was driving to work). I'm heading to Big Bear... I just came back from Russia, barely summiting Mt. Elbrus, and the mountains are calling me again...

David K - 5-25-2018 at 09:26 AM

How exciting!!! A vodka toast at the top?

StuckSucks - 5-25-2018 at 10:31 AM

Not too sessy with me. Driving a load of stuff from here to Camp Verde, AZ and return. Pretty much a bonsai run. On the way home I'm going to take some old sections of Route 66 (Peach Springs, Oatman, etc.) and do some light exploring.

Back here Tuesday and Wednesday then off to Ensenada on Thursday for the Baja 500.

AKgringo - 5-25-2018 at 11:13 AM

Well, I planned on spending memorial day on the lower west coast of the peninsula (Kenai, not Baja) but I am still high centered in CA!

It is raining today, and I still have a little water flowing on my property, so maybe I should go run a sluice box and look for some color.

I'ma going to Slab City to visit and drop off a lot of earthquake supplies, clothing , etc.
Then next stop DeAnza resort off the 8 fwy. for a bit of naturalist living (so I'll be vary close to Baja) but no cigar.

Planning a Baja trip the beginning of June though.

Hope whatever you do have fun and be safe......

Slab City, where everyone is on government support, yet they call it "the last outpost of freedom?" What a crock.

I'm sure you're right about some but it takes all kinds, to each their own, I'm not one to judge.............

David K - 5-25-2018 at 03:12 PM

Remember Social Security income was YOUR money taken out from your pay, so if that is what those in Slab City live on, it isn't quite the same as "government support", is it?

David K - 5-25-2018 at 03:16 PM

Photo #1 Hint: Baja Angel is pouring an ice cold Pacifico near the mouth of an estuary (river meets the sea). What is this beach called?

Photo #4 Hint: Same place as #5.

BigBearRider - 5-25-2018 at 04:51 PM

No vodka for me.

I made a mistake in my response. You had already said that 4 and 5 were the same place. I mistakenly wrote "5 & 6" in my response, when I meant "4 & 5."

As to #1, La Bocana? Or Estero Beach? Ahhhh... Bocana El Rosario.

Good point, some may not be scamming the "guvmint" and just be legitimate retirees, disabled. I do not want to paint all with one brush.

Social Security is actually paid from current workers paychecks, the "surplus" does not exist, it's just IOU's written by Congress. There's no pot of money they siphon interest off to pay retirees. That's magical thinking. But, we always have a magical money printing press!!!

This is why the decline in future workforce levels is concerning to all with any foresight. With us baby boomers all heading for "Slab City" in the near future, who's paycheck we gonna tap? Or, maybe fire up that magical money printing press and flood the market with dollars. Yah!

You got La Bocana correct (no not your La Bocana, Blanca!). El Rosario's La Bocana.
There are many 'La Bocana's in Baja, as there are many Agua Caliente's, etc. It is used for the mouth of a river, the mouth of a canyon, and the mouth of a lagoon, typically.

Sounds Nice JZ.
Good job on the video...
and posting size, too ;)

Have you seen the 1970 movie Catch 22 (similar to MASH)? WWII theme movies with weird people... It was filmed just north of San Carlos. The runway made for the film was still visible on Google Earth until recent construction.

From Wiki: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catch-22_(film)

Catch-22 is renowned for its role in saving the B-25 Mitchell aircraft from possible extinction. The film's budget accommodated 17 flyable B-25 Mitchells, and one hulk was acquired in Mexico, and flown with landing gear down to the Guaymas, Sonora, Mexico filming location. The aircraft was burned and destroyed in the crash landing scene. The wreck was then buried in the ground by the runway, where it remains.
