What's up with fire extinguishers in Baja

joel - 5-28-2018 at 07:47 PM

I tried to buy non-rechargeable fire extinguishers for my house and no one I could find sells them. Do they not sell them in Baja? Seems odd given the shortage of fire departments!

You should be able to find one at a store that sells boating supplies such as Fer Mar in Loreto or that type of store

Maybe they sell out the minute they come in?

Just curious, is are there many places in all of Baja that recharge extinguishers ???

I guess in a country where most houses are made of Adobe, Cement Block or Brick many do not burn down....I never have seen a seen a fire hydrant in Mexico unlike the USA with one on every corner....

I f you are near a Sams Club (La Paz,Cabo,Ensenada, Mexicali) Look for a Mikels 1 kg in the automotive section 249 mxn. They are rechargable but at that price doesn´t really matter.

I´m in mainland Mex and just saw them in the Colima Sams. Not sure if they have them in the Baja stores but its worth checking.

I'd be checking out local auto parts stores. They should carry smaller, non-rechargeable ones. :light:

Any smaller than 1 kg would be useless. Think this size. At half the price.:light:

Every kitchen should at least have a big box of baking soda to put out a grease or oil fire.
Empty as much baking soda that your hand will hold, then throw it at the fire in a sweeping motion.
Or a fire extinguisher if you have one.

Oil and grease fires are class B fires so,
DO NOT use water as water will explode and make it worse!!!!

Class A fires (combustibles) ( wood, paper, fabrics etc) are most effectively extinguished by use of water.
Make sure you have a good water source and a large diameter hose long enough to reach throughout your house. Maybe even one hose bib in front and one in the rear.

And don't forget a working fire and carbon monoxide alarm as they are cheap and a worthwhile investment.
