Crossing the border at Calexico

What's the best place to cross the border (going south) at Calexico? I know there used to be some construction going on, and that's probably done, but I seem to remember that there are some things to know about side streets and the like.

Also, if you were crossing there after a day that began at 4 am, or so, where would you go to get some sleep? We'll be heading down in about three weeks.

Go to search, type in Mexicali east and down half way is something titled Crossing at Calexico/Mexicali - an easy route, easy to follow, especially on your return to the US

Important!

Arthur, if you cross at the main Mexicali border (Mexicali West, end of Hwy. 111), look for the railroad tracks that go down the middle of the divided boulavard... THAT is the road you take for San Felipe.

Eventually the train tracks leave the street center and head off to Sonora, but that is the best way to see which road to use, because as soon as you are inside Mexico there is like 3 choices. The right one heads southeast for 5 miles to a traffic circle, where you will veer right (across the railroad tracks) for San Felipe.

Lots of signs, but if you know what to look for, it will help!

Arthur, There is a new road called the river road. It takes you all the way to Lazaro Card##as a few stop lights east of the corner of walmart and sams club where you will make a right to get on HWY 5 to SF. You get this by crossing at the Calexico port. After crossing the border make the very first right you can. This road will take you through past a Caliente and a bunch of shops and bars. When you come to the end you will make a right down a small hill and cross the new river. You will make a left on to a nice new developed road there. You can follow this road till it ends then turn left this will be Lazaro Card##as. A few stop lights and you'll make a right on HWY 5 and avoided most of the city traffic.
As far as staying the night You might be better off staying in Calexico or El Centro. If you want to stay in Mexicali then don't use the directions I gave you to HWY 5 because it by passes most of the city. Go through the Calexico crossing and go done Lopez Mateos. I would recommend Hotel Colonial. Right hand side of Lopez Mateos a few miles South of the border and you just get back on and continue South. Paul
