He is certainly going to be peeing off a whole lot of people, he will really need to watch his back...

mtgoat666 - 7-12-2018 at 09:07 PM

If they are looking for tax revenue, they should tax the well-heeled that have moved to Mexico for cheap living but have never paid a lick of taxes in Mexico: gringo and loonie retirees!

No S..., Sherlock

GypsyJan - 7-12-2018 at 09:10 PM

That was the first thought that came to me. The locals I know are very happy about the election results, though.

bajaguy - 7-12-2018 at 09:16 PM

"Yes, I would be glad to take a 50% pay cut, where do I sign up".........said no legislator anywhere

You mean like property taxes or IVA? Where do I go to get my refund? Let's see, I spend my money in Mexico for goods, hire local contractors for work, I don't use any of their social services and this is bad for them how?

There's a reason governments promote tourism, it's a one way flow of money into their economy. Most retirees are just long term tourists.

BajaBill74 - 7-13-2018 at 09:31 AM

With a 50% reduction in pay, it will be easier to buy politicians.:)

SFandH - 7-13-2018 at 12:10 PM

The Mexican Congress members aren't going to vote themselves a 50% pay cut. AMLO is blowing smoke.

Myopia. You consume way more than you provide by just driving on their roads...not counting police, fire, emergency care, immigration (if your the type that bothers to be legal), etc, etc. Taxes provide a lot more than "social programs".

You think so? I spent about 6 months and a considerable amount of money in BCS this past winter. I think the area residents (store owners and employees) benefitted by my pre$ence and of course I paid the 16% sales tax on applicable items.

I am sure a few benefited. But I live here and see it first hand. how much does the infrastructure, services, and government that is provided for citizens and tourists alike cost? Sometimes we take a lot of stuff for granted. You pay no income tax, property tax, etc...only the sales (IVA) tax when it is charged.

No different than when there are visitors to the USA. They don't spend enough to cover infrastructure used etc.

And the rent or lease you pay to the landlord. Doesn't he pay the property tax?

Of course. I am taking this "we support the country" argument any further. If that is what you think...go for it.

Problem here has nothing to do with socialism...Mexico has a very poor tax base (most revenues coming from oil production) and a disorganized government (nice way of saying corrupt). Money and organization is required to give us the social services you describe and others that are required. Maybe AMLO can do that.

property tax.

mtgoat666 - 7-13-2018 at 07:36 PM

If you want infrastructure, law and order and social services, then you got to pay taxes.

Tioloco - 7-13-2018 at 07:58 PM

If you want social services, paved roads, infrastructure- Stay in USA
If you want socialism- Try Venezuela
If you enjoy Mexico- LEAVE IT THE F..K ALONE

It is kind of nice to see a growing middle class with maturing Mexico... For those that want to keep it a poor play ground….STAY THE F..K AWAY.

Sewage and water treatment is a big issue that affects the health of every person. People in Mexico are suffering from water quality issues that damage their health and reduce their life expectancy. Even if you pay for clean drinking water the shower water that touches you is harmful and the ocean water is largely polluted in swimming areas to a degree that is extremely dangerous. Why not make water quality the number one issue to improve well being for Mexican people who could be against that? It's not impossible it just takes planning and execution.

AMLO, reminds me a lot of Governor, Jerry Brown, in California, and I expect great things from AMLO.

AMLO, is already on the right track.

So much for "Plan Mexico" with the cancellation of $1.2 billion dollars worth of military helicopters.

However, except the multinationals and Lockheed-Martin, to be very upset, with López Obrador, and we will be hearing talk of socialism, because López Obrador, would rather save that money for the people of Mexico, than some US defense corporation, and the politicians on both sides of the border who have their hands out for the piece of the action.

AMLO will cancel purchase of 8 Seahawk military helicopters

The navy has ordered eight of the aircraft for US $1.2 billion

Andrés Manuel López Obrador won’t be sworn in as the next president of Mexico for more than four months, but he is already moving ahead on campaign promises.

Since these were for drug interdiction purposes, could this be partially to fulfill his campaign promise to shake hands with the cartels?

Darn it, hit the Post paywall. Shaking hands with the cartels if it reduces the violence might be a good thing to do.

The One Certainty in post-election Mexico IS ............

MrBillM - 7-14-2018 at 09:21 AM

Disappointment.

Often with Disillusionment and Disgust to follow.

SFandH - 7-14-2018 at 11:01 AM

People seem to forget AMLO has to work with a Congress full of good old boys of all sorts. If he manages to bring down the violence, that alone will be a job well done.
