Catavina PEMEX

Ken Cooke - 7-18-2018 at 02:54 PM

Rumor has it that Pemex is moving to Catavina. :!:

Does anyone know the possible completion date of this gasolinera?

thebajarunner - 7-18-2018 at 03:26 PM

Completion dates in Baja???
Come on compadre, you know better than ask that question

Four weeks ago we were there and the gas pumps were there, in crates, in front of the new Pinos "Stop and Rob" store

Progress? You bet,
Completion? Quien Sabe???

And there are the usual barrel sales going on each side of the road within 100 feet of the Pemex site.
You have to wonder where those guys will go when the Pemex finally opens.

David K - 7-18-2018 at 03:27 PM

Gas will be for sale out of jerry cans right up to when the new Pemex is open... and again if it closes. Free enterprise fills a void and this location, 76 miles from the El Rosario Pemex, will always find gas for sale.

There has been a Pemex here starting in early 1974... but through mismanagement or sources of labor, not always open. A Pemex pump was installed at the hotel but that didn't last.

Look for future Pemex (or another brand) stations at the L.A. Bay junction (sign posted) and at Laguna Chapala... someday!

woody with a view - 7-18-2018 at 03:35 PM

Those guys will get a full time job pumping gas. Less overhead, more pesos.

rhintransit - 7-18-2018 at 04:03 PM

Was thru Catavina last week. No sign of pumps. Nice little convenience store, with snack bar, though. Los Pinos.

And not to mention all the propinas in way of "the wrong" change ?

Pumps were in there cardboard packaging last month

They were right in the store parking lot
Maybe someone stole them????
If you read some posts on this site that would be the expected outcome:lol::lol::lol:

TMW - 7-18-2018 at 05:11 PM

I think it is good to have a PEMEX at Catavina. I hope they can make it work for the long haul.

SFandH - 7-18-2018 at 05:17 PM

Yes a PEMEX at Catavina would be good, especially for the few locals. I don't know if I would leave the San Quintin area southbound without filling up first though.

willardguy - 7-18-2018 at 05:18 PM

I like the new convenience store, an OXXO would have been nice, Don Rafa's not gonna let that happen!

And I would never leave San Quintin with a full tank

Not when I know that an hour down the road I can fill my tank at an honest station, owned by a really nice fellow Nomad (Baja Cactus) get a clean windshield, decent banos (at last)

Supporting fellow Nomads is just the decent thing to do.
Plus, a full tank at Cactus gets you easily to LABay, Guerrero Negro, or wherever your next destination might be.

bajatrailrider - 7-18-2018 at 05:58 PM

When I was there they said waiting for new tanks that's the biggie.

rts551 - 7-18-2018 at 06:00 PM

Los Pinos is known for honesty and service. Having the store there at the same time to take a break, get something to eat or drink, is a plus.

"AND" at Laguna Chapala? Oh boy, they will hate each other.

David K - 7-18-2018 at 09:06 PM

Laguna Chapala is 30 mi from Cataviña, 30 mi from L.A. Bay jcn. and will be 30 mi via the new highway to Gonzaga Bay. Too close maybe? A logical location but maybe will wait to see how traffic flow will be? The land for the station was marked off, south of the junction, across from the Chapala tire shop.

rts551 - 7-18-2018 at 09:10 PM

That land (marked off) also belongs to Los Pinos.

David K - 7-18-2018 at 09:13 PM

That was my understanding, yes. Tomatoes at work!

chumlee57 - 7-18-2018 at 09:23 PM

Back in the mid 80's, I was stuck in Catavina for maybe 4 -6hrs, ntil the Pemex truck showed up to refuel. As always, I seem to fill up at all locations whenever I am below 1/2 tank, just Baja tradition. I also carry a few gallons for emergency's. Fuel in Catavina is only another benefit for all of us, the store is awesome, cuse some of us love to stay in Catavina, but would like the availability of some misc dinner food instead of the hotel food. The hotel food isn't bad, I've always found it pretty good, just that after paying $80 for the room, it's nice to have the store as a food option, especially if I want to spend my dough on a few c-cktails and a few games of pool instead. I've always found Catavina to be the perfect stopover from the border

rts551 - 7-19-2018 at 08:03 AM

For a number of years now, I don't carry extra fuel for the highway. It always seems to be available unless there is a hurricane or demonstration.

I must be missing something here

thebajarunner - 7-19-2018 at 08:30 AM

Antonio has gas at El Rosario
Two stations in LABay
Gas at Jesus Maria
Several stations in Guerrero Negro

Who needs gas in Catavina? Besides the locals?
Who leaves El Rosario, or LABay or Guerrero Negro without a full tank???

You would be surprised! A lot of people just go driving without reading Nomad or guidebooks first and EXPECT a gas station every 25-50 miles! :wow::lol::light:

In the first years of Hwy. 1 there was a Pemex station (between El Rosario and Villa Jesus María) at San Agustin, Cataviña, Parador Punta Prieta (L.A. Bay jcn.), and (Nuevo) Rosarito. Their ghostly structures are still along the highway.
Poor ejido management of sales income, lack of a local labor pool, no secure armored car money pickup, are some reasons why they failed.

Just think, now you don't have to worry about it. Besides, for years, Catavina has been a stopping/rest spot for many. Too bad Gotta Peso not here to see it.

Tomatoes are merely a part of their complex, multinational, vertically integrated cash machines. Maybe they could add a laundry mat to their stores for their traveling customers convenience?

For those who head west from Cataviña and have not upgraded their vehicles stock fuel capacity with an aftermarket option, a fuel station there would be most welcome.

Marc - 7-19-2018 at 09:21 AM

Memories....Pemex across the road from the hotel, and later the pump at the hotel. After the hotel pump was closed the desk clerk could always arrange gas. I remember a small kid who hung out at the Pemex who could do complicated math in his head.
Later on there was a tire shop for a short time.
I never really needed gas at Cataviña, but topped of anyway.

willardguy - 7-19-2018 at 09:32 AM

one of david's first maps was at catavina! :P

David K - 7-19-2018 at 09:59 AM

Cataviña... ah, the memories there!

... or guidebooks, indeed. When somebody is so dumb that doesn't realize that he is not in the US anymore - well, maybe we should leave it to natural selection...

Marc - 7-22-2018 at 01:37 PM

Gas??

fishbuck - 7-22-2018 at 04:34 PM

I needed that Catavina gas once. Was so happy to get it.
Super bad area to run out. Almost did. No please to get off highway.
I was starting to lose it a little cause I had been on the road to long...

Wow,,,,, getting rear ended would be seriously ugly

Fishbuck, what are you talking about, - no place to get off highway. I was driving a compact car with small tires and low clearance a few times. Every 10-20 miles there was a place to get off the highway.

El Rosario to BOLA or Pta Prieta takes ~1/2 of a small tank. More gas if you don't drive smart. Those washboard hills/curves near El Rosario will eat your fuel if you're flying, breaking every few seconds and then again accelerating. Doesn't take a guide book or road knowledge, - only a common sense.

Will be good for motorcyclists, like me. My KLR will easily get from El Rosario to Jesus Maria but my Suzuki GSX1100g only has about 170 mile range at best. When riding it I always have to buy gas from barrels where ever it is available. Many bikes do not have 200 mile range.

Perhaps bikes are not meant for long-distance travel. Anyway, it's only 150 miles from El Rosario to Pta Prieta.

Tell that to the people who have ridden around the world on one (or two in the case of my wife and I) We're currently on two 650's. Started in Germany, now Kazakhstan heading to Mongolia and then Vladivostok.

When on the moto I've always taken advantage of the gas at Catavina or BoLA turn-off. Future trips won't be the same with a regular gas station there.

BajaHawk - 7-28-2018 at 04:00 PM

Looks like it will be a convenience store and gas station. I stopped in a couple of weeks ago. Big selection of goods and they are grilling-up food. Brilliant idea.

thebajarunner - 7-28-2018 at 04:02 PM

But no cervezas for sale as of last month
How long will that last in Baja???

New job for the gas can guy?
Sell cold beer from a cooler in the back of his pick-up?
I like it!

Where is the gas station in Punta Prieta?

Gas from cans sold at the L.A. Bay Junction (Parador Punta Prieta, Km. 282/Km. 0) and the town of Punta Prieta at the store on the north side, Km. 12.5, west side of the highway.

David,
I knew that, just didn't get the reference to Punta Prieta when I had referenced the distance from El Rosario to Jesus Maria. I top off the bike at Catavina since the guy at the BOLA turn off is not always there and the same goes in the town of Pta. Prieta.

bajatrailrider - 7-29-2018 at 01:33 PM

We always fill our dirt bikes at Catavina as our route was over 180 miles to El Rosario. Mikes Xr440 4 gal tank no problem my wr450 3.6 gal carry extra gal. Problem the 300 Gas Gas two smoke used over 8 gal still ran out of fuel.
