LA RIBERA GILL NETTING

East Cape Fishing Report

March 2, 2005, La Ribera, East Cape, Mexico Commercial Gill Net Fishing Report:

The illegal East Cape gill netters who killed the whale a couple weeks ago mended their nets and they are out there right now near our beach. This morning's haul, with 3.5-inch mesh, was bat rays and roosterfish. The locals here are convinced that when violation reports get to La Paz they die by the weight of corruption. The guy is here, the nets are here, the whales, and everything that swims or floats, are being netted here illegally. This is never gonna stop unless somebody stirs up Mexico City, forces them to act directly, not through La Paz

Sharksbaja - 3-9-2005 at 02:31 PM

If they are illegal and you know Nationals locally who oppose the bastards then I would try to dislodge them through intimidation. Go out there and confront them. Ask to see documents so you can be assured they are legit and if not tell them they are being reported. Don't be afraid to call them on it.:no::no::fire:

Cincodemayo - 3-9-2005 at 03:27 PM

That's what underwater explosives are for. Where is Diver when you need him?

Diver - 3-9-2005 at 05:56 PM

Have Bang-Stick, will travel !

I HATE NETS !!!!

I watched the fish and crustacean population in south Florida get wiped out by netters over the past 15 - 20 years.
Makes you want to get VIOLENT !

photos?

gringorio - 3-9-2005 at 08:32 PM

What about taking photos, while the fishermen are there, just to let them know that people are watching and their actions are being recorded. A sort of passive intimidation?

F__K Passive

Sharksbaja - 3-9-2005 at 09:24 PM

Get a whole bunch of people and go out and scream and wave your arms at them. Then send a scuba diver out to fix the repairs on their nets with his sharp knife.

Sounds like someone needs to get over there with an AK-47 and let those guys know that they are not welcomed.

I don't think Mexico has that many naval ships. Just take a Zodi out there and do donuts around the plunderers.

Gil nets

Osprey - 3-10-2005 at 07:14 AM

If you were here you'd be as frustrated as we are. Simply menace him and you lose your right to stay in this country. He has a permit. It's like this: A guy is driving at full speed on the wrong side of the road. When he's stopped, you find out he has a permit to do so. Go look for the guy who issued the permit -- he's the bad guy, the corrupt guy. In this case it's the La Paz office of CONAPESCA. All my reports, GPS #s, photos, accounts go to people with clout. They go to Mexico city, those folks call La Paz, corruption or apathy or mishandling leads to just another day of gill netting for this guy who the local Co op and private fishermen refuse to confront or control.

sink em!

Sharksbaja - 3-10-2005 at 11:56 AM

limpit mines? que es? I guess it would take a national to make a serious enough bribe as to get some action.....

East Cape Fishing Report

April 19, 2005, Peter Langstraat, Baja California Sur, Mexico Gill Net Fishing Report:

The last three years I encountered gill nets every time I was at East Cape, at Punta Arena to Bahia el Rincon. Every single time I tried to get some authority there. Sometimes I tried even for weeks and nothing ever happened.

The police at the village of La Ribera say it is not their duty.

Mark Rayor's diving center at Buena Vista has two inspector-captains. However Mark says they are allowed only to inspect the Cabo Pulmo marine preserve.

I've had hotel keepers sending mails to Profepa in La Paz, but they never got any response. According to local Mexicans that is exactly what you can expect from La Paz.

I've had other hotel keepers get in touch with the authority in Mexico City. Well, Mexico City wants "evidence." In other words, they want me to risk my neck getting up close so that I can take pictures of them in action and capturing the names and numbers of their boats at the same time. Mission almost impossible.

I know their names and the names of their boats, but no numbers. I know where these people live and I have pictures of their nets when they were in the water from right near shore towards about a mile out. But still it is not enough to trigger some action.

Skeet/Loreto - 4-26-2005 at 03:41 PM

Tommy. I hope that you realize that you may not Win! I give you a lot of respect for Trying,
Suggestion: Go up to Loreto and talk to the people up there. They were successfull in stoping the Netting up there. Not entirely but they put a Dent in the Numbers.
Skeet/Loreto

Cincodemayo - 4-26-2005 at 03:53 PM

Use the dolphin to place underwater mines on their hulls....then kick back and watch the fireworks.

Skeete wish I could take the credit for the report on the Gill Netters in East Cape but Peter Langstraat who lives down there and reports for Western Outdoor News is the real hero. But I like your suggestion about finding out how they have stopped it or at least slowed them down in Loreto. Any one in Loreto like Fly fishing Pam have any ideas I can foward to Peter. Thanks I try to keep this thread alive from time to time because gill netting is just not right!

mike odell - 4-26-2005 at 08:44 PM

Just reread all the posts on this subject, All of you folks are
right, something outside of whats not being done Needs to
get done who besides me wants to step up to the plate?
I can offer my boat, 3 guest rooms in my house, food, and
a round table for discusion, Wanna get serious about change, I am ready to get with it but cant do it alone.
I will push all the legal limits to stop this damn gill netting

who on this board wants to be constructive and how?

I will forward this thread.....

Sharksbaja - 4-27-2005 at 01:38 AM

to Jean-Michel Cousteau. He has been active in Baja this year. Maybe he can drop a line to a top ranking official.

Skeet/Loreto - 4-27-2005 at 10:53 AM

I feel for your Struggle. After all those years watching the Netting, the only enforcement I ever observed was in Front of rancho Sonrisa North of Loreto.
Now this nex suggestion is the only thing or way that I can think of to stop Netting: Get all of the Groups that are trying to Save the Fish , increase the intake of Money to the Point that they can pay the wages of the Small Gill Netters, in other words buy them off.

Next, find someone with the Political Muscle to Stop it as was done with the japanese Boats several years ago.

My advice, and you won't like it, is shut up or risk being deported and or harassed in every possible way. There are plenty of nets around Loreto and there's not a damn thing we can do about it. sorry but that's the truth.

Skeet/Loreto - 4-27-2005 at 03:12 PM

Listen to Pam!

The people who helped form the national Park in Loreto and 25 miles out had some very Strong Pull in Mexico city. they were able to get a lot done.
this happened a short time before Pam came to Loreto.

years ago the rumor was that mexico city allowed theNational Park in Exchange for leaving all the other fisherman alone.
When the Park Opened in Loreto there were Military Boats Patrolling and boarding all fishing boats, went over until everyone realized they were indeed going to enforce the rules, they also moved out all Shrimpers.

You had better realize that what ever you do you are taking away a Mexicanos Beer, Food, and way of Life!, and let me tell you they will not go easy. I lived for 4 years with some of those fisherman. They can Split your Stomach, fill it with rocks in Short Order.

Please be carefull.

Skeet/Loreto

Tucker - 4-27-2005 at 03:30 PM

I'll go along with Pam and Skeet on this one. My philosophy has been and still is "don't try to protect the Mexicans from themselves". If this problem has been brought up to the appropriate authorities. That's all that can be done without stirring the pot and possibly paying with your immigration status.

neilmac - 4-27-2005 at 03:42 PM

Hey, Skeet....

I'm sure you're right about these guys.. still, I wonder what they're going to do for 'beer, food and way of life' when they've seined and gill-netted and long-lined the last of the fish; when the gulf is as dead as the Salton Sea. Maybe they'll all caddy for the golfers, there sure as hell won't be any fishermen coming down.

I'm looking at Costa Rica trips as it is already.

Neil

Neil

Skeet/Loreto - 4-28-2005 at 08:28 AM

Neil: As you know Mexico is very slow to change, Baja Faster due to being so close to LA, but you cannot make a Mexicano thnk about "Tommorrow" when all of his life he only thinks about "Today'.

When the Shrimpers did not get any Shrimp, they started seining the sierra out of the Bays for Fertilizer.

Try to change a Mexicano fisherman is like trying to change a Welfare Recipient from catching one of the Free busses to Las Vegas, a Liberal from voting for Hiliary, a conservative voting for Condie Rice. Once people, are trained a certain way it sometimes takes a Stick of Dynamite to wake them up.

Skeet/Loreto

neilmac - 4-28-2005 at 03:42 PM

Skeet;
Yeah, you're probably right; it leaves damn little hope for the gulf. I'll bet all the fish saved by catch-and-release by all the sports fishers for a year doesn't make up for the by-catch of one full-time gillnetter.

"Once people, are trained a certain way it sometimes takes a Stick of Dynamite to wake them up."

I guess this brings us back to the limpet mines, no?

If the nets are being used illegally then how can reporting a crime lead to deportation? Does Migra think it operates above the law?

wanna hurt em? Bad?

yankeeirishman - 4-29-2005 at 07:41 AM

If you can just find out where they are sellling the goods.....and confront that marketplace. Then they be out of venders to sell too........... a bit better than blowing up the nets. If the venders dont stop buying....pass the word around...dont do business with the vender's outlets.
