Yuma Dove Hunting 2018

John Harper - 9-3-2018 at 03:49 PM

Did pretty well this morning, cracked a cold St. Pauli Girl by 7AM. 15 doves in 36 shots, found a great location yesterday afternoon. You can see 14 unfired shells from the second box. Not too bad. Limits on day one and two as well, but I gave one limit to my friend's wife, who wasn't as lucky.

David K - 9-3-2018 at 05:41 PM

Nice, we don't see any Baja hunting posts in this forum, so Yuma is pretty darn close! Thanks. Hunting used to be a big draw to areas like Rio Hardy and San Quintin when it wasn't a big hassle to bring rifles and shotguns down.

mtgoat666 - 9-3-2018 at 06:51 PM

Can’t understand dove hunting. Bird of peace. So many on my property, and behaving pleasantly, peacefully. Tiny little birds, hardly worth effort to pluck, cook n eat. And its not even a “fair” sport, like shooting ducks

chuckie - 9-3-2018 at 07:33 PM

Thanks for your input! Goatley

Ken Cooke - 9-3-2018 at 07:56 PM

I don't understand sport hunting, either. But, some people love it.

Skipjack Joe - 9-3-2018 at 09:58 PM

I think you have to be raised to like it. They stop being living things and are just targets. You get used to it.

Cliffy - 9-3-2018 at 11:54 PM

Many live on the food provided year round. Birds, pigs, deer, elk, bear.
In Africa, one elephant can feed an entire village for weeks (and it does). Same with a large giraffe, 2000 to 3000 lbs of meat for an entire village. NOTHING goes to waste in Africa when properly done.
I love deer, right next to my peas and carrots.

chuckie - 9-4-2018 at 03:00 AM

We have lots of Doves this year! I like to shoot them but not to clean them or eat them or eat them...SO Don't...We are kinda short of elephants tho...

John Harper - 9-4-2018 at 05:22 AM

I first went at 4 years old, have not missed an opening day. I'm 60. So, yes, dove hunting was part of my entire life. I also realize fewer and fewer of us are hunters anymore. SAD. Of course, you can all play hunting video games on your phones, I guess that's the same?

I pick up every empty shell I see, have been doing so for over 30 years, well before it became PC. I am a steward of the lands I hunt, and take care to preserve them. Not sure why it's not "fair" since the wild birds fly over and you have to have the skills to hit them, same as duck hunting. Duck decoys are fair? Interesting, but we don't use decoys, blinds, or tree stands. Just crouch behind a creosote bush in the desert. Not sure why that's not "fair" in some folks opinion, but it is what it is.

Oh, and dove is delicious. You need about 5 per good meal. BBQ, smoked, or in the crock pot, they are tasty. Of course, your palate needs to realize that wild game tastes different than commercial meats. I'm sure glad they don't have to kill any animals to get you all your fried chicken and hamburgers. At least I hunt my own meat in this case.

Thanks, DK, I was hoping Yuma might pass muster as "north Northern Baja" or at least "Old Mexico."

Or Pro Football.....boring

David K - 9-4-2018 at 07:35 AM

Baja Angel was a hunter before we met. She used to do the Dove Opener in El Centro with her ex and her three kids. It was quite a big deal from the sound of it. She can live off the land and gut and turn inside-out a dove in seconds by the stories I have heard.
About the closest I have come to that is ordering quail for dinner at the former El Presidente Hotel in Cataviña. The manager had just shot them! Of course, I killed plenty of fish in my time growing up in Baja camps... All food doesn't come from Ralphs or Costco, you know!
I think everyone should watch a Ted Nugent Spirit of the Wild TV show, at least once! :light:

Yeah DK The Nuge Rocks some got the spirit of the wild some Dont How about some dove jalapeno poppers

.... if we could just get Da Nuge and BLOATUS to go dove hunting with Dick Cheney.... :light:

AKgringo - 9-4-2018 at 09:57 AM

I hunted doves a few times when I was younger, but didn't care to eat them, so I quit shooting at them. They were a tough target, much more challenging than clay pigeons, and I missed a lot!

The one thing that was nice about a successful dove hunt, is that by the time I used up my ammo, consumed my water and snacks, my pack was always lighter on the walk back to my car.

Hunted on Fort Mohave Indian Reservation this year up near the AVI Casino. Was a good hunt. I will give 75% of my birds to people that want them and I will eat the rest. I BBQ them and they are worth the effort.

Try a peach slice with the chicken breast, then wrap the bacon.

So, what do you eat in your perfect diet? Fish? Someone catches and kills them. Chicken? Horrific, unsanitary, crowded conditions, and terrifying deaths. Beef? Veal? Pork? Need I mention veal pens, slaughterhouses, factory farms, hog farm waste, etc.

Unless all you eat are plants and grubs, I expect you have some blood on your hands as well. What about those grubs? Don't they have feelings?

People have hunted long before they invented mountain bikes, spandex panties, and vente lattes.

bajaric - 9-4-2018 at 05:12 PM

Goat, defender of pigeons, I am glad you speak up for the opposing viewpoint. Myself, well, I am not a hunter. A question though, on the topic, what do you hunter guys think about steel shot? Ryan Zinke, on his first day as secretary of the interior rescinded an Obama-era policy of the Fish and Wildlife Service to ban lead shot (and lead fishing weights) in federal wildlife reserves (this allowed hunters to use lead shot again) The reason, I think, was as a much a reaction (hatred) against "Federal overreach" of the Obama administration as anything.
In my prospecting adventures I have observed that in the US that the public lands in the desert, as well as the creeks in the mountains, are full of lead shot and bullet fragments. The land is literally carpeted with lead. I know this because I am fond of digging up dirt and putting it in a pan and washing it to see if any heavy metallic elements will be found in the bottom of the pan. In the US I find a lot of lead. In Baja this is not the case; the land is more or less lead free. That is why the condors have been able to make a recovery there; not always getting poisoned by lead shot.

chuckie - 9-4-2018 at 05:58 PM

The hunters argument against lead ban is “but it’s too expensive!”
Same arguments Dow chemical, Monsanto use to justify their pollution.
Sad!
Lame!

If “sportsmen” care about the resource they hunt, they would quit using lead ammo!

Timinator - 9-5-2018 at 05:49 PM

I went to Yuma dove hunting for 30 years straight, maybe more. We started out in Blythe, then Brawley, El Centro but once we "found" Yuma, that was the place. I haven't been back in the last several years after moving to Ohio, thank God I have doves on our property here. I'm also 60. My brother will be back in Yuma for the second season.

Cliffy - 9-5-2018 at 06:24 PM

We can go to Argentina and shoot 5000 doves a day because there are so many and because the do heavy damage to crops in the ground that goat might eat :-)

BTW, plants have feelings too! Can't you hear the lettuce screaming when you cut it with a knife?

Lets not get into the CFC argument that Montsanto started about R-12.
Or give me one good reason why 80% propane/20% butane can't be used for a car refrigerant? Both are listed as refrigerants. It works great but don't ask me how I know. For @ 50 cents per car.

I've been going since 1976, before that, the Bakersfield/Porterville area. I may try the late season now that I have a place to stay north of Yuma on the River. Nice to see we have things in common! Right on!

We just sold my folks house in Carlsbad and moved them up to Arcadia too. I'm not sure what place you have along the river, but we usually stay at Motel 6 and make the reservations the year before. AC, Pool, and out of the sun.

When we first started going to Yuma, we' be hunting on the Indian Reservations along the river. The Mexican kids would cross the river and retrieve and clean the doves for us and we'd give them a buck. It was fun helping them out and having them point out birds we didn't see coming.

Not that Yuma doesn't hold more than enough doves, but late season, Gila Bend, AZ holds even more doves.

Cliffy - 9-6-2018 at 11:18 AM

The worlds getting smaller, Timinator! We used to stay at the El Rancho Motel until it went downhill. Used to have a nice pool and grass area to cook and eat. Last time I stayed I had gangsters on one side and hookers on the other. Now we've been at the Oak Tree/Baymont Inn. Nice rooms, reasonable price, breakfast voucher, cleaning station. I make reservations as I leave each September 3.

This year a retired teacher I know wanted to shoot with us. She and her husband have a nice double wide up at Hidden Shores Resort, just west of YPG. She invited me to stay at their place for late season, hopefully next Labor Day too!

I speak jerky! I kill a deer or two on our property here in Ohio ever year and do it all in jerky throughout the year till the season starts again. I have a bigger stainless dehydrator know, not the Ronco POS in the picture.

Ok, let's make it about Baja; doesn't it just suck that you can't bring jerky to Baja. No dried sausage, no meats at all. Sure wish they'd change that law.

Cliffy - 9-8-2018 at 08:59 AM

You can't bring it back into the USA either. Try that with bilitong from impala meat in Africa!

chuckie - 9-8-2018 at 09:22 AM

I took a full seasons supply of Elk,venison and game birds to BAJA every year for many years.Packed it in a freezer powered by an inverter. I put some whole chickens on top to help the Mexican inspectors feed their kids.....did that for 20 or more years. No problem....I do the same now,but don't go to BAJA anymore....Tastes just as good here.....

Cliffy - 9-8-2018 at 09:46 AM

I've got some elk filet mignon in the freezer. I think today is a good day to throw it on the barbie! :-)

BTW, what's the difference between dove, quail, chickens or turkey?
Or don't some eat chickens and turkey either?

Timinator - 9-8-2018 at 10:31 AM

Wild Turkey you "usually" just eat the breast meat and it's very tender and very tasty. The rest is pretty full of tendons and not much tender meat. Wild Turkey's are not "Butterballs". I cut the breast meat in strips then soak in buttermilk, then lightly bread and fry. Wife say's it's the best turkey she's ever had.

Wild Quail are very tasty, don't overcook.

Chicken Well, the "yellow meat" chicken in Mexico that is yellow from them eating Marigolds is absolutely on a different taste level than chicken from the states. It's as good as chicken get's just on the grill with salt and pepper.

Doves - I've been eating doves for over 50 years. Personally, I'd rather have a hot dog. I've eaten them every way you're going to suggest too; marinated then wrapped in bacon on kabobs with pineapple, etc. Hopefully you have a tasty marinate! But they are the most fun game bird to shoot.

Some people might ask what happened to the back half of the goat?? OH YUMMY MTN GOAT STEW

Cliffy - 9-8-2018 at 12:01 PM

Just lay where they fall? Do you dolts have any idea what the legal penalty is for doing just that? No ethical hunter I know of does that. In Alaska ALL the edible meat has to be prepped taken to the camp before the trophy horns are allowed to be removed from the kill sight. The Fish and Game checks each kill sight by air to make sure only the skeleton remains. BIG penalties if its not done.

I know it beating a dead horse but if you had any interest in the true story of conservation you might look up as see what the Pittman-Robertson Conservation Act actually does every year or how much money groups like the Dallas Safari Club and Safari Club International donate every year to prevent ILLEGAL poaching and wanton waste of wildlife in Africa. You have no clue what actually goes on in Africa but unfortunately all your side can do is bury your head in the sand and yell obscenities. Don't do anything worthwhile, just make noise, that's about all your side has the interest to do.

mtgoat666 - 9-8-2018 at 12:49 PM

Some of you “responsible” hunters need to visit rural America. Meth, oxy, heroin use is rampant; hunting is conducted illegally more often than not; and people are poor and angry and mad at govt. most rural angry white men hate laws restricting hunting, and they break the laws whenever they can. Enforcement is light, so people easily get away with illegal hunting.

Chuckles,
I find it hard to believe that in your little patch of Kansas farm field heaven you can’t find a poaching, angry white man with meth or oxy addiction problems. Look harder!

P.s. I can spend ten minutes in any baja fishing town and find you a half dozen meth heads that poach fisheries and got anger problems!
Gotta keep it baja-related, ya know, eh?

To partially corroborate what the goat dumped, the rural area where I own property in northern California is crawling with meth heads! I have never used it, and won't tolerate it around me, or on my land, but I have met plenty of tweakers!

None of the drug addled idiots that I know of hunt! In fact, many if not most of them would be arrested for possession of firearms or ammo by a felon!

Grass Valley has long been a prime area for pot farming, and even though it is legal in California now I don't know anyone that is growing according to the lawful regulations. Meth, opioids and other illegal contraband is a companion industry!

Catch and release is not just for fishing anymore, so there are far more criminals on the street than there should be.

Why get obliterated? Never understood getting drunk just to do it either.

All the fun is in getting drunk.
I really don’t like being drunk.

According to JoeJustJoe......

"Hunting Linked To Psychosexual Inadequacy

It's a shame my anti- hunting Dove post was pulled in the main area, where I called BS, on the claim Baja members, were killing doves for food. What BS from a few of those sadistic wimps who get off killing small birds.

If my post was not pulled I was going to bring up the fact that most serial killers, start off killing small animals, usually small birds, and then go on to sadistically raping and killing women.

Then I was going to make the link from hunting, hurting, and killing animals to psychological inadequacy, and having a small xxxx. I'm at a lost at what causes more deep psychological problems, do you blame Mommy, or blame the fact that you have a small "xxxx"

Take heed hunters.......soon you will be sadistically raping and killing women.....

Nice Red Herring Joe was tossing out there.... Did you also know that most serial killers also....
....take showers?
....wear pants?
....shop at grocery stores?
....drive cars?
....have attended a public school?

OMG I am a serial killer just waiting to happen!!!!

Nope, think not.

The correct phrase is that most hunters never become serial killers nor become sadistical rapist.

P.S. if you are alive it is because you eat. Want to eat just plants? Fine go ahead.

If you eat meat from a store that is fine too.

Why the grief for people that want to hunt for their food?

JoeJustJoe - 9-9-2018 at 12:58 PM

I will have no comments in this thread except to say, DaliDali, lifted one of my posts from the OT, and brought it to the main area of "Baja Nomad, like ELINVESTIG8R, often does when he tries to get back at me.

DaliDali, edited my posts, added his own words, and didn't even link the article I was referencing.

So if you're interested in what I really said, read it in the OT, without DaliDali's edit jobs, although the gist of my anti-hunting post is fairly accurate.

DaliDali, is still sore, since he though he could come to the OT, with his right-wing talking points, and make me see the wisdom of Trump's Presidency. After a few choice words by me, I don't think DaliDali, will be back to the OT.

I even warned him when he came to the OT, to not bring OT posts to the main area for various reasons. I guess, he will have to learn the hard way.

What is an OT?

No problem if folks need to hunt for their food. However, very few in the USA and Canada need to hunt for their food. This thread is about folks who like to hunt for food....not needing to.

Ted Nugent isn't really a role model for many folks....

I was on a 2000 mile off-road moto ride in Montana, Idaho, Wyoming last year with a group and made friends with a nice guy who worked for state forestry in Washington state. Part of his job was shooting pine cones from trees for seed source ( he said the ones on the ground were not as good for seed).

As our friendship developed, he shared that he had been a sniper in the army in past 12 years. While I never asked for war stories out of respect, he said that everyday after work he would shoot a box or two of shells to relax and would kill coyotes as often as he could.

He just wasn't finished with killing.

We are still friends.

You said you would have no more comments on this thread, and by not posting a reply to DaliDali, you can show that your word means something!

I am sure that you guys can finish up in Off Topic without taking the rest of us along for the ride. Happy trails to both of you! :D

Be careful about wishing for pence, he is raving lunatic religious freak, totally warped with biblical nuttiness — so crazy he is afraid to talk to a woman one-on-one without a 3rd person present (perhaps he has uncontrollable horniness syndrome?)

Years ago ,an unidentified person snuck a beat up Remington pump gun into Baja. This gun found its way into the hands of a Mexican farmer, with legal paperwork. As I remember (hearsay). There was a document taped to the stock identifying the owner. If the owner were a good friend he would loan it to you,on occasion. This gun it was rumored, slew good numbers of Fat Pintail ducks in the freshwater sloughs, many quail and doves as well. This bounty was usually shared with the farmer and his family, hunter (legal) doing the cooking, and providing adult beverages, farmer and family providing appetite and side dishes....This took place back in what are now known as "the good old days". Farmer has long since passed....VCD.....Rancho es no mas....

Here is the tragedy of Opioid deaths:
Act 1. Person suffers injury of some sort and gets introduced to Oxy for pain management.
Act 2. Doctors cut off Oxy, problem is person wants same level of "relief" for what is now a psychological problem too and tries heroin.
Act 3. "Relief occurs with heroin, but person wants to "get clean".
Person tries to "get clean" but relapses. New supplier they find sells them Fentanyl laced heroin, person takes same dose as when they tried to go clean, but now its enough to kill the person.
End of story

chuckie - 9-10-2018 at 01:11 PM

do you put much garlic in your dove stew? Or are you too busy ingesting opioids?...WTF does any of what you wrote have to with dove hunting?
