Thanks for posting it. Looks like they found a way to connect with the Laguna Chapala-Punta Vibora road without going all the way to the coast. Laguna Chapala is the furthest-south crossing of Highway 1.

Some nice areas, I like it. I may have to do some pre or post running on sections of the course. The area at RM560 is a ranch with a locked gate other than for the race they may not let anyone thru. From RM380 to RM480 looks like fun.

Here's a map of the '15 Baja 1000 - the Pacific coast section west of CataviƱa/Chapala is similar to this year's course. Granted this was three years ago, but the white dots on this map leaving Punta Blanca were known nasty silt beds.

David K - 10-3-2018 at 09:52 AM

I will bet there will be some course changes following a review after Rosa's damage.

B1k Results
Lots of speculating on class results before the race as to which class should be the fastest - now resolved.
The TT specs did better than 10 Not generally predicted
The Best UTV was slightly slower that the first C1 and ahead of the 2nd C1, Faster than C10, Faster than half the TT Spec field.
For sure teh UTVs has gotten much faster as of late.
I am amazed at the performance of the mentioned classes.
Maybe SCORE needs to re-think the class starting order.

willardguy - 11-18-2018 at 09:54 AM

and yes folks....thats a BIKE for the OA!

for those of you that said it would never happen again:P

TMW - 11-18-2018 at 11:40 AM

Congrats to Justin Morgan on the OA/OA. It's been a while since the bikes beat the Trophy Trucks. The course must have been more technical than I first thought.

TMW - 11-18-2018 at 11:43 AM

Also congrats to Chad Thornton for winning class 30. Made his dad proud.

basautter - 11-18-2018 at 12:00 PM

Nice to see a bike win, and a good showing for the UTVs! :bounce::bounce:

David K - 11-18-2018 at 12:52 PM

Bikes have usually been the fastest, overall winner. Only when there was a lot of pavement (and no speed limit) could the V-8 racers of folks like Parnelli Jones or Walker Evans turn in faster times than the unlimited bikes. We are talking ancient history, lol.

In Off Road Racing, you are competing only with others in your class. The Trophy Trucks are typically the fastest four wheel class but Class 1 may get ahead in time. There are many motorcycle classes.
Other than for bragging rights, there is no extra award for beating another class... just the prize for winning your own class.

basautter - 11-18-2018 at 01:59 PM

It's still pretty cool, DK!

Lol. Nobody who rides a dirt bike is wreckless. Even the best go down occasionally.

basautter - 11-19-2018 at 05:05 AM

Bikes are definitely more dangerous to race, especially with trophy trucks and other high performance 4 wheeled machines on the same course. That is why I retired from racing bikes and am switching to a UTV. With age comes the cage...

A couple of things have changed Baja racing as we once knew it. I think the biggest affect has been the use of tracking devices. No more cheating whether it't hwy speeding, off road shortcuts, Etc.

I also think for the bikes it has been the smaller engines. 30 years ago the KX500 2 stroke was the king ridden by some of the best desert racers on the Kawasaki factory teams. Honda had the XR600/650 4 stroke. A heavier bike not as quick as the KX but still competitive.

Before everyone switched to a 450 the Bikes more often than not would OA the Baja 500 and 1000. The SF250 was the one race where Trophy Trucks would beat the bikes everytime, I think it had to do more with suspension, too many whoops for the bikers.

More recently the lack of factory support. No more Honda, Kawasaki, KTM etc teams with the best racers, JCR was probably the last effort made.

Justin Morgan is a darn good racer and would be on a factory team as well as his team mate Mark Samuels, just not a lot like them racing today.

Fun to see how it all began in 1967, running Hwy. 1 to San Ignacio... the pavement ending north of Colonet...

Originally created by NORRA and called the Mexican 1000 (until 1973)...

South of La Purisima, the course rejoined 'Hwy. 1' but that year it was still unpaved until you were about 100 miles north of La Paz.

Here's the map of the course for the following year, but it was pretty much unchanged other than dropping the ceremonial start in Tijuana and restarting in Ensenada.

Checkpoints:
1) Camalu
2) El Rosario
3) Rancho Santa Ynez
4) Punta Prieta
5) El Arco
6) San Ignacio
7) La Purisima (Jcn)
8) Villa Constitucion
