HWY 5 bridge washout by Gonzaga

norte - 10-1-2018 at 08:59 PM

The new road is washed out. Lots of pictures and good road reports over on Talk Baja. For those that do not do Facebook, Can't help you out.

RFClark - 10-1-2018 at 09:14 PM

Hi, we got almost 6” of rain today at KM 46 on Hwy 5 south of San Felipe. Water is running down the arroyo next to the house. There seems to be a lot of beach erosion from the wind (30 mph or so). They are working on Hwy 5 between KM60 and KM75 so it is likely in really bad shape around KM60 where the wash crosses Hwy 5. More news tomorrow after it’s light. Seems like power was off in San Felipe today too.

Ken Cooke - 10-1-2018 at 09:22 PM

:light:Lots of damage-worthy pics. These are some San Felipe images from earlier today.

I've stayed at that hotel, bottom picture.

BajaDanD - 10-2-2018 at 09:58 AM

We are heading down next Saturday taking the 5 down to the 1 and south from there can't wait for the adventure what's the word on Hurricane Sergio

ddonnell - 10-2-2018 at 11:06 AM

I received an update from some folks at Gonzaga. Not looking too good.

"""There is a bridge washed out at K122, or 15 miles north of Gonzaga. You can get around on the west side with clearance and 4 wheel drive. They met XXXX at the washout and he said there were 3 or 4 more washouts before Huerfanito.
One is impossible to pass. They are trying to get reports on Hwy. 1 now."""

Have also heard that the military is closing the 5 from Mexicali to Gonzaga for 3-4 days.

ah common, how could that Be!
I have it on irrefutable authority (mtgoat 666) that the whole storm was a nothingburger.

so ? Fake News?

ddonnell - 10-2-2018 at 01:24 PM

Just got another update:

Currently no way to get to Gonzaga. 15 washouts that require 4wd and one that is impassable. On Hwy 1, Catavina is "under water".

motoged - 10-2-2018 at 01:39 PM

Catavina "dips" are often wet even after periods of no storms....but the storms really fill them up. They also seem to always be broken up pavement at their low points.

OCEANUS - 10-2-2018 at 03:47 PM

I've always wondered why they wouldn't build bridges to span the Catavina dips. Aside from the obvious monetary reasons, it seems best to let the arroyos swell/retreat beneath a structure then to always be in a constant state of repair/restoration.

SFandH - 10-2-2018 at 03:50 PM

One problem with Catavina is it is in the middle of nowhere. Long commute for the workers or a camp needs to be set-up. A complication.

Bridges cost a lot. A lot!
The arroyo xings in catavina are cheap. When they are undriveable, it’s for just a few hours, perhaps a day.
For the limited traffic, existing xings are adequate, and very thrifty!

We aren't Luddites, just security conscious. In the photo it looks like there is already a bypass road cut below the washout.

No worries my Great White North amigo!

Here is the washout at Km. 42-43 (from Georgia, South Campos Amigos Facebook page):

Maybe the road collapsed from the weight? Should have driven faster?!

It looks odd, the front would be more torn up and the fenders pushed back into the doors if they had hit with any force. :?: What a bummer.

If it was wet no skid marks?

Cliffy - 10-3-2018 at 06:15 PM

Maybe they were going slow over the flooded portion of the road (with the culvert underneath) and it all collapsed with them on top.

Wash outs in Baja? Why, I can't believe it! :-) Its been this way for the 40 years or so I've been down there. What is the surprise? Loose fill dirt, 2 inches of asphalt and you have a road bed. Now would I want to be building the roads down there No Way! But I have great respect for those workers who go way out in the middle of no where, in the hot summer and build roads. It would be a tough job that none of us here on BN would ever do. Not one of us.

It might be a good BN idea to carry extra ice and drinks and stop and give it away to the road workers as we pass through. What do all you think? Foam ice chests are cheap. Carry a few extra, stocked with drinks and ice.

freediverbrian - 10-3-2018 at 06:58 PM

We might need another thread look at hurricane Sergio spaghetti paths could be a double hit for northern Baja.

Umm, yeah, cause that's what I said in my post. Holy moly.....lighten up Francis.

Cliffy - 10-3-2018 at 10:38 PM

I think you've had one too many tonight. Get some sleep. You jump to conclusions too quickly and take offense too easily.

TMW - 10-4-2018 at 08:49 AM

As to skid marks anti-lock brakes don't lock up until at a slow speed.

mjs - 10-4-2018 at 09:06 AM

Already posted on FB that she was driving slowly and the road collapsed underneath her.

MX-1 dried out

We got out of Gonzaga Bay yesterday (10-3-18). MX-1 dried out, and MX-5 south of Gonzaga Bay is in good condition. The 17 miles of unpaved road are passable in any passenger vehicle, albeit still lots of sharp rocks.
