They know it's going to be a girl? Thanks so much for letting us know - I'm passing through this weekend WITH THE FIRST BOX OF BOOKS FOR THE LIBRARY.
If you're in San Diego and want me to take your book donations, let me know. Neal Johns - 3-9-2005 at 05:45 PM
wilderone, post the titles of the books so we will make an effort to not duplicate them, please.
Baja Library in El Rosario
David K - 3-9-2005 at 06:04 PM
That is a good idea Neal...
I have (so far) obtained new copies of three books from their authors, gladly donated for this library at Baja Cactus.
They are:
Las Misiones Antiguas by Ed Vernon
Saints and Demons in a Desert Wilderness by Dave Werschkul
Baja Adventures by Land, Air, Sea by Marvin Patchen
I have a few duplicate books in my library I will be donating as well.
By the way, as of Wed. 5pm I have not heard from Antonio about his new baby girl (yes, the ultra sound was pretty conclussive Wilderone).wilderone - 3-10-2005 at 10:18 AM
There are too many to list here, but I think any duplicates would be welcome. If there are really too many of one title, they can be sold in a "For
Sale" section. Baja authors could sell their books at this outlet like a regular book store too. I think that would be a good disposition for
accumulated maps too. It would provide a bit of income as well. Among other things, I have prepared a photo album with a few shots of many different
places and labeled them accordingly. In the same vein, David, if you have a collection of mission photos, you could prepare a special photo album
about the missions. See where this could go?? And I don't have any of the titles you listed above.
I reproduced 4 articles which were in San Diego History booklets in the 70's, rather than donate the entire booklet. I made a color copy of the cover
and bound each article in a 3-hole clear cover report folder. There are 2 Spanish/English dictionaries (not real good quality, but this is another
item, besides the maps, that could be sold for a couple dollars if there are too many).
Right now, there's a little of everything. I will prepare an initial list for GP (general principle), but after a time (I HOPE), the project will
take on an energy of its own and I won't know what's being donated.

This subjest is sort of buried in this thread and might loose out from viewers. Perhaps it should have a place or be withing the Literature section of
the message boards.
I look forward to seeing what is accumulating there and bringing a few along to donate.
John M.wilderone - 3-10-2005 at 02:51 PM
Thanks, John. I'll provide a report when I get back (in a week). I hope to take pics, but am a little clueless as to how to post pics.
Adding pictures
John M - 3-10-2005 at 04:04 PM
Heck I didn't have a clue until a few days ago. Easy as can be.
First, David says the picture needs to be no larger than 50kb - not too hard to make it that size. Then, just at the bottom of the window you are
typing in to do a reply is the word "attachment" opposite that is "Browse" - so click browse, find the photo just like you were going to attach it to
an email and double click the photo. It will magically appear soon enough! What had me wondering when I tried it is that it took quite a long time for
the photo to appear, like thirty seconds or so. Maybe cause the photo was 48 or so kbs.
You ought to try it. John M

Wow!
Wilderone, you da man!
Do we need to leave our first born for library privligeges?
Debra - 3-11-2005 at 02:31 PM
She's really cute! (someone remind me to keep her away from Mr. Johns!)
Sounds like some great reading!David K - 3-11-2005 at 07:00 PM
Wilderone... I will nodify Neal's comment and say you're 'da PERSON!
I will be taking the books I have to BajaCactus tonight if I get to visit the new family at the hospital...David K - 3-12-2005 at 02:33 PM
Last night I brought to Antonio some books for the El Rosario/ Baja Cactus Library from my book collection...
Lower California Guidebook 4th Edition c1967 by Gerhard and Gulick
Offbeat Baja c1977 by Jim Hunter
The Baja Book II c1977 by Tom Miller
The Sea of Cortez c1966 by Ray Cannon
Time of the Bells- When California Began c1961 by Richard Pourade
Sea of Cortez Review c2000 by Jennifer Redmond
I also gave Antonio the following three books donated directly by their authors for the library:
Las Misiones Antiguas, the Spanish Missions of Baja California c2002 by Edward Vernon
Saints and Demons in a Desert Wilderness, A History and Guide to Baja California's Spanish Missions c2003 by Dave Werschkul
Baja Adventures by Land-Air-Sea c1981 by Marvin & Aletha Patchen
I think we have the Baja research library off to a good start!
Antonio plans on making a hospitality room at his motel where guests can meet, plan their explorations, research their trips.
Please consider donating any extra Baja books to the library, you may have... Keep the adventure alive!
[Edited on 10-19-2005 by David K]David K - 5-7-2005 at 08:49 AM
For the Baja Cactus Baja Research Library in El Rosario, I bought a copy of Harry Crosby's 1974 'The King's Highway in Baja California'. If we meet
with Antonio this weekend, I will give it to him. Harry autograped it for me last year when I bought his new book on the Camino Real between San
Fernando Velicata and San Diego, and the people who came from Baja to San Diego ... 'Gateway to Alta California'.
Folks, if you have a Baja or California history, desert, sea shore book to donate... bring it with you to the Baja-Rosario Cultural Festival July
22-24... You are coming, right???
[Edited on 5-7-2005 by David K]bajajudy - 5-7-2005 at 08:51 AM
We were in El Rosario and wanted to donate some of our books to the library but couldnt find anyone who knew anything about it.
If there is a drop off place, please post it so next time we can leave some books.
GraciasNeal Johns - 5-7-2005 at 09:10 AM
The "Library" collection is in the BajaCactus Motel by the Pemex station for the use of their guests, so drop the books off at the Motel. Thanks!bajajudy - 5-14-2005 at 04:11 PM
Thanks Neal, sure wish we had known that! We stopped at that Pemex(doesnt everyone) twice and went into the hotel looking for Antonio but for some
reason I thought that the library was across the street.
Next time!David K - 5-15-2005 at 07:04 AM
It is a 'future' library that will be in the motel... until that room is made the books will be on display in the lobby or ? But, not until Antonio
can make some shelves... Books are not to leave the motel (and 'get lost')... There will be a hospitality room...David K - 5-15-2005 at 08:36 AM
In the lobby, at Baja Cactus is this model of the future there... On the left note the chimney... that is the roof above the lobby. On each side are
the rooms that are already open. The larger building just to the right is the future tourist facility... A convenience store (like an AM/PM), medical
station/ doctor's office, laundromat, showers, tourism office... Perhaps the hospitality room/ Baja Research Library will be in the new building
eventually.
EL ROSARIO is going to be changing and Baja Cactus Motel and Pemex is leading the way. The nearby Diamante del Mar mega-development/ jet airport is
part of the future for this historic village. EL ROSARIO will continue to be the gateway to the vast wilderness of central Baja... But, it very well
could be a destination point... with so much to do and see in the area.
bajalera - 5-16-2005 at 09:03 PM
The library's a really great idea, but Research Library? That's a bit pretentious.
LeraDavid K - 5-16-2005 at 09:09 PM
Okay, but if you don't look at the books there for researching your Baja trip/adventure... then why take the time at Rosario to stop there (if you
were not sleeping at Baja Cactus, that is?? The word 'research' was just my addition... sounds more academic I thought... for students of
Baja-ology!bajalera - 5-16-2005 at 09:20 PM
Well that's my objection. Sounds academic--which is likely to turn off the average Bajaficionado/a--although it isn't.David K - 5-16-2005 at 09:26 PM
Well, that was my term... Antonio never called it that... It really is Wilderone's baby... So, let's see what she has to say about the name... We do
have some great books to get it started... Everyone coming to the big town festival July 22-24 should try and bring a desert, sea, or Baja related
book not yet on the list... if they can.David K - 5-26-2005 at 06:07 PM
Awesome John, good job!David K - 5-26-2005 at 11:19 PM
At Barnes and Noble tonight I bought a copy of Baja California and its Missions by Tomas Robertson, La Siesta Press c1978... I was surprised to find
it there! Anyway, I already have this fine book and bought it for the Baja Cactus library... will deliver it to El Rosario tomorrow night.wilderone - 5-31-2005 at 10:04 AM
Since I'm coming to the Cultural Faire in July, thought I'd accumulate more books for the library. So I bought 18 from Alibris.com, online - free
shipping!!
Also, Antonio envisions a wonderful library, which will also have books for sale, where Baja authors can offer them for sale, and will also be a
library for the El Rosario citizens as well, with other subject matter besides Baja-related. So although it will serve as a point for research with
it's abundance of Baja-related subjects, including historical, geographical and biological, it will also contain books for citizens and hotel guests,
generally. I occasionally run into best sellers in Spanish, which I buy too, for this purpose.
"Baja California and its Missions by Tomas Robertson, La Siesta Press c1978... " - wonderful addition - thanks, David.

yet...
A reading/research room is planned for the future.

Updated book list
John M - 10-26-2005 at 07:27 AM
Wilderone and others
I added the books Wilderone is taking for the El Rosario book library to the ongoing list (to the list on my computer) and will repost a new update in
a day or two.
Has anyone added any other books recently that aren't shown on the list several posts up?
If you can take the time to put the author and date of publication with your titles it will make our list more accurate.
John M.David K - 10-26-2005 at 06:05 PM
I should have taken a photo of the huge custom bookcase in the lobby at Baja Cactus last weekend! It will contain the books once Antonio has a safe
system or hospitality room, so the books don't 'get lost' once they become available for viewing.wilderone - 11-21-2005 at 10:28 AM
Lucked out this weekend and found a few more titles to add to the list:
Diving and Snorkling Baja, CA, Lonely Planet, Walt Peterson Feb. '99
Baja Handbook, Joe Cummings, Feb. '92
Baja, CA , Lonely Planet (5th ed. 2001) - another one
Baja, CA, AAA Auto Club '95
National Geographic, Dec. '92 (Whale sharks)Neal Johns - 11-21-2005 at 06:06 PM
BajaCactus must have found a better home in the motel for the books. The bookcase was empty a few days ago.David K - 11-21-2005 at 07:17 PM
The books will NOT be stored at the motel until a SECURE system for viewing them is devised... The bookcase is huge... I will get a photo of it this
weekend when I am there...
No one wants any of these valuable Baja treasures to become 'lost'.
If you want to borrow a book while you are staying at the motel or resting in the future hospitality lounge (on your way south), you will probably
have to provide some kind of guarantee or deposit. Antonio will come up with something good. I am sure we can convince Antonio to get a coin operated
copy machine...BajaCactus - 11-23-2005 at 02:07 AM
Not to worry my friend Neal...
All the books are safe and well guarded at the moment.
I have been making reference cards for each and everyone you have so kindly donated...so, everyone can have a better idea of the book they want to see
prior to asking for it.
Also, I am working on a VERY secure and safe way to lend them...we do not want any of them to get lost.
The book showcase at the BajaCactus Motel lobby is ready and waiting for it to be filled, we even put a couple of custom made chairs...but it has been
my fault there is nothing in there yet...
Also my architect is modifying the third stage of construction of the motel to include a full size library.
I apologize for not being more agile in this matter... I just do not want to mess it up...and besides... I have also been extremely busy finishing up
the installation of the high speed satellite connection at BajaCactus....this is almost done...in 2-3 weeks at the most will be up and running...and
then I will have more free time to finish the library project.
No problem with that copy machine David... easily done.
I wish to deeply thank everyone helping in putting this library together...I believe we will make a very nice project of this.
Antonio M.

The collection keeps growing with your donation/ contribution of a Baja or related book/ magazine.
The future hospitality room will likely be the location of the library. The books are being kept safe until a system is devised that will keep the
books from 'growing legs'.
Check the list that John M made above, and if you have something to add, bring it down this weekend and enjoy the festival.
Antonio is treating all Nomads to a special dinner Saturday afternoon at the motel!wilderone - 7-19-2006 at 03:20 PM

John M - 8-8-2006 at 05:10 AM
Keeping tabs on what has been donated, here is what I have as the most current list.
When we were last in El Rosario I talked with Antonio about these things. He is still as enthused as the rest of us. His concern is that the books
don't grow legs and wander off into the wilds of Baja.
The custom built bookcase is a dandy.

Thanks John.
The author of 'Baja Legends' is Greg Niemann, if you care to add that...
Great book all Baja enthusiasts should have, fairly new (c2002), published by Sunbelt. I had the honor of being one of the proof readers when Greg was
ready to send the m/s to Sunbelt.bajalera - 8-13-2006 at 02:05 PM
Hey, DK, in working with a manuscript, you were a copy editor, not a proof-reader [these read stuff after it's been typeset]. So you can upgrade your

Oh, okay then... Greg sent me (and a few others) the m/s and I went through it and found some errors that were corrected to Greg's relief... just
little things like directions, mission stuff, etc.
I also edited 'Saints and Demons in a Desert Wilderness' and added some details that were put into the final edition.bajalera - 8-15-2006 at 11:28 AM
OK DK, welcome to the club. "Everybody," as Norman Mailer has said, "needs an editor"--and finding work is relatively easy. The hard part is finding
people willing to pay you for it.David K - 3-27-2007 at 11:22 PM
