Turtle Hatchling Release in Todos Santos

wilderone - 10-12-2018 at 08:10 AM

One of the highlights of my trip was releasing turtle hatchlings into the ocean. The Grupo Tortuguero turtle protection program in Todos Santos has periodic hatchling releases, inviting the public for a donation. These turtles had hatched a couple hours before they were to be released. We were told they need to be released within about 2 hours after hatching or their health suffers. There were about 300 turtles released that evening. After letting them go, waves would wash them back toward shore, and they would march out again, sometimes being washed back by waves more than once. It was surprisingly emotional watching these babies struggle to the ocean to begin their lives. They’ll release about 40,000 this year –up from 17,000 10 years ago.

I tent camped with my dog at this place last year to volunteer. Great experience waking up in the a.m. to check on hatchlings.
Glad to see they are finally requesting donation to view.

Nice photos. I hope to see so many turtles that they are (again) no longer endangered.
