Not a lot of dunes in baja. You’ll figure it out.

ElCap - 11-7-2018 at 07:58 PM

Not telling either. Don't want to to see motos on them.

Yep...

10 or 15 years ago, there was no border fence separating Mexico from Buttercup (the section of Algodones dunes on the south side of I-8 freeway in the Imperial Sand Dunes Recreation Area). Once into the major dunes, there weren't even markers for reference. The biggest bowl on that side of the border was commonly called "Mexican Bowl", at least by the crowd of regulars that I hung with. Big enough for buggies to take in 4th gear. A tall steel fence, erected across the dunes put an end to the "accidental" visits to Mexico. Youtube videos indicate that the Mexican side has become a popular recreation area, accessed from Mex Hwy 8.

bajatracker - 11-8-2018 at 07:45 AM

South of Abreojos.Circa 1984 use to go down every year in june to windsurf & ride we would ride bikes down to lagoon then load bikes on panga theyed take us across lagoon then ride mud flats to the biggest dune in baja.google earth it. took 600r to make to top. was a blast. Have a place in bola now and have been trying to get my old fart buddies to ride our quads across the penisula down to abre and back. I have been all over the seven sisters riding and surfing. Fun dunes over there nothing as big as the one south of abre.

I bet you are the type that complains about Glamis too and tries to get that shut down.

David K - 11-8-2018 at 08:24 AM

Look west of Scammon's Lagoon.

MMc - 11-8-2018 at 08:26 AM

Look south og GN on the south side of the lagoon.

I didn't type "bonehead". I was going for "richard" head, but the BN censors got me..."donkey"hole seems appropriate too.

Whatever spins your Krank, Charlie!

wyatthurley55 - 11-8-2018 at 09:53 AM

BajaTed - 11-9-2018 at 11:24 AM

Glamis dunes, BUT watch out for the cartels making drug runs

basautter - 11-9-2018 at 12:42 PM

Ok, I am an avid dune rider. South of Route 8 was very good until the wall went up (sigh). Looking at Google Earth, it looks like there are some fantastic dune ranges around Mag Bay. I have not been there yet, but it's on my short list :bounce::bounce::bounce:

shari - 11-9-2018 at 04:33 PM

the biggest tallest dunes I have seen in Baja are out along the mouth of Laguna Ojo de Liebre NW of GN and a bit inside the lagoon at a place they call La Ventana. They are inaccessible by vehicle so pristine!

David K - 11-9-2018 at 05:02 PM

Exactly!:light:

StuckSucks - 11-11-2018 at 01:56 PM

This video will start 4:15 in, with big axe sand dunes.

watched that Cameron Steele stuff for the first time. What a bunch of TV hype.
Ward Falls in episode 8 (3:11) not on the maps? Ha!

Load the bikes on a panga?

David K - 11-11-2018 at 10:21 PM

That's how Gardner did it in 1960's Hunting the Desert Whale to explore Isla Arena. This is the dune island between Guerrero Negro Lagoon and Scammon's Lagoon.

Modern maps showing Isla Arena

It’s part of the protected biosphere area, please confine your stupidity to the the mainland.

chuckie - 11-12-2018 at 07:59 AM

Maybe some jerk off will start running tours ?

4x4abc - 11-12-2018 at 11:17 AM

maybe not the dunes you are looking for, but it is definitely a dune field and has the highest face drop in Baja - around 55 m (180 ft)
30°19'58.50"N, 115°47'18.58"W

highest dunes around Guerrero Negro are about 40 m (130 ft) - that is above sea level. Their faces are rarely taller than 10 m (33 ft)

largest one I know in the Altar Desert is about a 120 m (400 ft) face

David K - 11-12-2018 at 12:31 PM

I drove by that sand cliff Harald... and while it is a blow-sand face and high, it really is not in a 'dune field' in the normal sense, is it?

The sun had just gone down as we neared Hwy. 1 by El Socorro. This may be the side of the big sand cliff, too dark for the photo to show?

It was a great 57-mile trip, discovering 'Petroglyph Park' along the way.

More images from that trip, Thanksgiving weekend 2005: http://vivabaja.com/1105/

Apologies -- a massaged version for a little easier viewage.

David K - 11-12-2018 at 05:31 PM

Thanks Jim... I can actually see the sand on the hillside with your great photoshop job! Maybe I should email you the original?

4x4abc - 11-12-2018 at 08:50 PM

it helps to have a decent editing program for images - especially if you like to promote Baja with books and articles (this one done with Photoshop Elements - fairly inexpensive)

4x4abc - 11-12-2018 at 08:54 PM

or even lighter

JZ - 11-12-2018 at 10:37 PM

Open up those shadows!

4x4abc - 11-13-2018 at 09:58 AM

JZ, when will your next film session be?

Hoping the end of December of the No Wimps. Coming up from the South.

Might also do a separate video of Timbabichi and El Gato from the same trip.

David K - 11-13-2018 at 02:51 PM

Thanks Harald for lightening it up even more. That is obviously not the sand cliff as we can see the brush. The sand cliff is further west, but not much further.
