Fall 2019 Adventure - Convoy??

Doug Landolfi - 11-27-2018 at 07:08 PM

Hi. I am starting to prepare for my first Baja driving/camping/diving/fishing adventure. I plan to drive a Toyota Tacoma pick up with a roof top tent, generator, and camping equipment from Mexicali to Mulege, and eventually to the East Cape. I will be semi-retired at 59, and plan to have an open-ended time frame and itinerary. My main objectives will be great diving, catching a lot of fish, and having a life adventure. I traveled around the world for 9 months in my mid-30s, and have been working hard to set up for a "mid-life next adventure". I will be traveling by myself. I am planning to cross the border at Mexicali on a date TBD in September 2019. My two kids will be off to college, and it will be time for "the next stage of life". I would be interested in hearing from anyone who might want to convoy in that time period. I would be open to have someone travel with me (fun, nice, adventurous, honest woman from 45 to 55??). I am open to any advice, guidance, and suggestions. Thanks, Doug

This is probably not a very good dating website
Advice you want? If you announce you only want to date younger women, you got to show the prospects you got $$$
Don’t discount the older women, some are worth considering :light:

I plan on doing some fishing in Sept/Oct next year, and may be interested in joining the caravan for a while. Keep me in the loop! :bounce::bounce:

Hook - 11-28-2018 at 05:58 AM

Just be aware that September is a very common hurricane month and the resulting problems that can cause. Flooding, road closures, increased bugs, etc. Muggy nights are multiplied by 10x, with all the moisture on the ground and in the air.

Personally, I would wait until early-mid October. I have lived nearly full-time along the Sea of Cortez for over ten years, now, and September has the most uncomfortable weather of any month. We bug out........literally and figuratively. We head north.

You can hang out on the Pacific side and be much more comfortable, but the area from about Guerrero Negro down to the Cape bears the brunt of the hurricanes. Be able to keep abreast of them.

By mid-October, the weather has started to cool, humidity starts to recede, fishing in the Sea can often be better and the ocean temps on the Pacific side haven't declined much at all. The peninsula remains very green.

I know there were late storms THIS October, but that is not the norm.

I'm considering taking a route through Baja on our way to our house in Sonora in October. Then taking a ferry across. I really havent been in Baja much in the last five years, and never really did much on the Pacific side in the Seven Sisters area.

I think it was due to the media blackout on Nomads back then........

Doug Landolfi - 11-28-2018 at 06:17 AM

Thank you! I can certainly adjust my timing to start the trip in October 2019. My thinking regarding September was that the summer heat would be less intense, but I hadn't yet heard or read anything about the bugs - I don't enjoy biting bugs .....

I appreciate your great guidance!

I will definitely keep this Post updated as we get closer to October.

And I'm sure they appreciate not being bitten as well.

If all of you are representative of the people I will be meeting during my Baja adventure, it will be a great trip.

motoged - 11-29-2018 at 10:43 AM

Don't let Baja Nomads "representatives" be your crucible for your Baja travels....while we think we are full of useful information (sometimes true), those are just our preferences and may not be yours.

However, your loose travel idea is to be commended....go for it....some people like the serenity of the water and desert and pursue them through "sport" activity (fishing/off-roading/hiking-exploring)....by themselves or with a few other like-minded folks for company. Some see Baja as just another bar to sit at and blather on in their alcoholic mirage....some come to enjoy the different cultural aspects of Mexico.....others come and constantly talk about how the Mexicans should do things the "American" way.

And there is everything in-between.

Eat tacos....standing up on a street somewhere....avoid eateries full of gringos....that's not where the best food is in my opinion.

Leave your cell-phone habit at home....it's good to not be connected for periods of time....

blah, blah, blah;)

fishbuck - 11-29-2018 at 12:14 PM

Sounds cool.
A small convoy might be ok.
It get's tough for a big convoy of Mohos.
I like the sound of your trip.
I did this once and hope to get another try at it.
I think I would just have a general place to go and just wander my way down.
Kinda open schedule.
I generally don't camp except for special spots. I'm a cheap motel camper.
But open schedule is good because you can slow down and tune in to the local scene.
Different experiece that way.
Cheers

But do you own thing. There is no wrong answer.

Bajazly - 11-29-2018 at 02:18 PM

Sounds like a good idea to me. I should be all set up in San Felipe soon and living there full time in the next few months. Come down that way and I'm sure you'll have no problem getting me to pack the truck and head out for a couple weeks or so to join you. Fishing and camping and beer on a remote beach sounds like a winner and October would be better weather and fishing than September,

Media black out on Nomads?

What was that about?

Doug Landolfi - 11-30-2018 at 10:22 AM

Thank you all! I will stay connected. I find myself putting my "day job" aside every day, and wandering around on Baja websites, shopping online for Tacoma 4X4s, daydreaming about the trip ........

Maybe a singles section would be good.
Not everyone is into this calling and single kindred spirits would have hope of finding someone to share it with.
Spoken from selfish personal desire.

fishbuck - 5-25-2019 at 09:10 AM

The Single gezzer seeks younger Baja chick Caravan?

fishbuck - 5-25-2019 at 09:12 AM

I can advise on this if you need...
I'll tell you where the "caravan" will end up eventually.

fishbuck - 5-26-2019 at 02:19 PM

I'm not allowed to talk about that anymore... this being a "family channel" and all...
But I can show you...;)

How about we start with a BajaNomad get together.
Say the Old Mill, Jardines, or Cielito Lindo.
I might be able to get us into the Hacienda Grande by Cielito Lindo.
Rooms are $50/night on AirBnB.
But that is a secret beach... so;)

Will there be a Pig roast, fish fry, charades, s'mores around the camp-fire and skinny dipping late at night ?

fishbuck - 5-27-2019 at 11:56 AM

Sure...
Even naked whalewatching for you Brother Paco...

If it happens after Aug.1 I will have more yellowtail than I know what to do with... I love to give away fresh caught fish.
Maybe some yellowfin also...
I might need help catching all those fish...:bounce:

Loretana - 5-27-2019 at 12:03 PM

Doug, it will be most helpful to your overall enjoyment and success on your adventure to understand what the Folks here are saying to you.....

How is your Spanish? Take a Community College class this summer if you can....the language will be fresh in your mind, and you'll meet like-minded new amigos/amigas.

Then you get down to Baja and practice and learn "in situ" ("in the original place")

Buena suerte!

shari - 5-27-2019 at 01:53 PM

Oh darn....I'm over 60 so that lets me out...hahahaha!
Hey Doug...come on over to Bahia Asuncion...it's fun in Sept/Oct for our hurricane parties! Plus it's a cool place to hang out...like to get out of the heat in the rest of Baja at that time.
Baja Gypsy can give you a test drive!:o

Baja doesn't get better than an invitation from Shari!
And if you fish with Juan you will be ruined...
The town rocks with local life...

It happens here.

Doug wants to convoy. Good idea. But I don't see the giant moho convoys like use to.

I think there are lots of singles on BajaNomad. But everyone will make fun of us if we try to hook up... but that's ok...

We should have a BajaNomad party and mingle.

I had lots of fun trying to find love in Baja... found some, lost some...
But I not suppose to talk about it... nice people read BajaNomad

Shari and I are old friends. Her husband Juan is fun to fish with. She lives in a Bahia Asunsion and runs a cool hotel. Fairy tail stuff.

It can wander off topic here...

Mother of Dragons - 6-8-2019 at 12:27 PM

Thanks fishbuck. I’ve seen some conversations here that make me think singles would be a beyond tame subject! Lol

Only if done properly;)

Me recuperating at cheap motels by Knotts after my last trip.
I'm only 2 weeks past a double hernia surgery.
This is in front of Midevil Times.
So I'm on vacation in California for my next Baja trip.
I need to haul stuff this time...
But I'm already recovered and back to the gym...
Alittle work on my truck and it moving day!

fishbuck - 6-26-2019 at 12:17 AM

Nightime in Ana-slim...
Working on my nightcrawl...
Resting and recuperating at a cheap motel near Disneyland.
It's very cool here.
Tomorrow back to Tustin. Closer to my storage and my home beach. Formerly Newport.
Now Baja is my beach.

I'm about ready to head south. A few more days of living like a tourist... and I'm gone.
I'm a convoy of one to Santa Francisquito...
A day or 2 of free fishing and maybe to Bola if I can't get it done by kayak.
Got to have a hot weather yellowtail.

fishbuck - 6-26-2019 at 02:33 PM

I thinking of BOLA instead.
Anyone want to split a panga?
I really need to pull on a yellowtail...
I'm tempted to go after Bluefin from San Diego but think I will wait until there are more yellowfin in the mix. And it costs about $400.
I want to go get my limit of yellowtail now.
Maybe $150 each... for 2 maybe $100 3 way split.

fishbuck - 6-27-2019 at 03:53 PM
