11/28/2018. Hwy 5 to Chappla ( Hwy 1) is passable. Details: driving 2W Tacoma. San Felipe to Puertecito: KM 40-76 rough washed vados. Puertecito
to Gonzaga Bay: Series of washed out bridges, primarily driving on dirt by-passes, paved road has several approx. 5’ wide & deep collapsed road
berm sections all but one well marked. Re-Construction very active, Driving conservatively took about 3 hrs. Gonzaga Bay/Los Grande Market/Pemex to
Hwy 1: When pavement ends it’s combination of pavement & gravel dirt road as it’s been in past years. Gravel part about 13 miles followed by
about 5 miles of pavement then 1 mile of gravel to Hwy 1. Drove the new gravel section and did not take the left turn to the old road going to
Cocos. Couldn’t really tell if we were suppose to be driving the new section, looked as though someone just moved the plastic barrier. Travel was
ok, but when the 2nd choice came to continue on the new road or go back to the old, we took the old. No visible signs of roadway being done. Driving
conservatively about 1-1/2 hrs from Pemex to Hwy 1. Even though we saw one truck pulling a trailer, we’d only recommend driving with a truck or
passenger car with 10 ply tires.

I drove it last week south bound. Still way better thn 15 yers go so cant complain. ther are still semi trucks, cars and boats being towed on the road

Way better than 15 years ago but way worse than a few months ago. Expect off-road re-routes often. 4x4 is not necessary but patience and time will

Did the drive from Mexicali to Gonzaga on November 15th with our 2WD Sprinter 170 EXT. High Roof. Slow go into and just South of Peurtocitos, beyond
that the minor detours were not bad at all. Only thing notable was on the way back North, there was a smaller pickup towing a large boat (Southbound)
that appeared to have bottomed out the trailer hitch in some some deeper, loose gravel on a bypass/detour causing blockage on the ‘main road’.
There were plenty of guys working to get it moving again so we decided to go off to the right to pass. It was even deeper on that side and had I not
gained momentum prior, it could’ve been interesting! I never did air down and was just fine. Don’t let the route stop you...enjoy the slower pace!
