Greetings,
I'm heading down to Baja Friday and was curious if there are many whales in the lagoons yet? Any babies?
thanks for the update!

It's still real early but your best chance to see a few whales is at the mouth of Laguna OJo de Liebre. Mario's tours is a great outfit and their big palapa is just after the border stop before GN. I called them this morning and they report seeing a few whales. Their tours are at 8 & 11:00 am and their number is 615 157-1940..tell them Shari sent you!

The whale watchers on the Oregon coast are reporting whale traffic picking up heading south every day.

The whales aren't in Baja yet. Maybe a few that left early.
But the mass of whales is just starting to pass by here now.
I will forsure go out on a boat here in a week or so. Hopefully some pictures. On flat days they swim right up to the boats now.
Seems someone has been coddling them since they where born, hugging them etc. and now then need lots of attention.
Tons.
And you better give it you know what's good for you!
Should peak here over the next month. Easy to see several a day.

Best time to see them is March when babies have lost their shyness with boats.

It's blowing 20 knots today so I can't imagine many will get spotted.
Brilliant sun today. Cold. In the 50's.

I have had best luck in late Feb through mid March. Went down to San Ignacio once in December, and did not see a single whale...

fishbuck - 12-28-2018 at 02:54 PM

I'm not sure how far a whale can swim in a day.
Like 20 miles?
So it's a time and distance equation.
You can do your own math.;)

Q. How fast do gray whales travel during migration?
A. Grays travel at about 3-6 miles per hour (4.8-9.6 km/hr). The can cover nearly 100 miles (161 km) a day. They can cover the distance from Unimak Pass in Alaska to the lagoons of Baja California Mexico in an average of 55 days. The pace is slightly slower on their journeys north, particularly for mothers with new babies.

A whale passing here is about 1-2 weeks away from the lagoons.

Very interesting Matt. They are also swimming against the Pacific Current when they are northbound... and that isn't easy *ask any yacht skipper who sailed "uphill" from Cabo!

FISHBUCK - do you work for Davy's Locker? My husband used to flip burgers weekends on the Western Pride (mid 1980s) - we met on the Freelance (other landing) but anyhow I would fish every summer weekend on the Western Pride (dead head, donated lots of jackpots to the crew!).

we went out on Laguna OJo de Liebre with Mario's tours yesterday (new years day).Saw a dozen or so whales, including one close encounter. Still early - yup, but there are whales to be seen!

No. I live near it. Some of my best trips to the island were on T-bird.

the place to get so cal whale migration updates is

Right now the big gray fish are running a bit low compared to last year, and running below recent average, perhaps they are traveling late, perhaps global warming has killed them? WTF knows? The whales know
