Is this an old arrow or....?

Fatboy - 1-19-2019 at 11:06 AM

Saw this 'stick' high up in a large cactus at Las Animas. It is 10' to 12' off the ground. In order for the video camera to reach it it was on a 48" tripod and I was reaching as high as I could so that alone places it over 10 feet high.

It looks as if it has been there for some time. I assume that cactus grow like trees, from the top. If that is so it would not get higher off the ground as the cactus grew.

It would stay at the same height it was originally as the Cardon grew taller.

Any ideas?

Strong winds?
Cowboy joke?
I have seen picks in cactus...

Forgot about the cowboys.... but it seems in an odd spot for a one since you would have to ride around the cactus to stick it there but maybe.

Awful big cactus! I wish I had a ladder then I would climb up and try to pull it out....

It is certainly in there.... when I bumped it with the video camera it felt really solid.

Shaft looks a little big for an arrow. Probably some kid with an improvised spear.

it is very common in Baja that trails are, aside from blazing the Cardons, spiked with objects. Or an actual sign.

Do you mean in diameter? Or in length? Diameter is a little larger than a AA battery, that seems small for spear.

Plus it goes in fairly straight (level) and it is solid, so it is in the cactus quite aways.

It seems a spear would be heavier and due to it's height I would expect it to be angled up or down.

It is odd though, might just have to remove it someday and see if there is a tip on it.

Very interesting.

Does not really match any of your photos... first it is much higher, again 10 to 12 feet off the ground.

Also it is just a relatively small stick, not metal or some other unusual object.

It also faces away from the current road.

Then again who knows, because I sure don't.

Then I need to go back ASAP!

Will there be a follow up marker to narrow down the search?

Anyone want to sponsor my trip? I will gladly share the treasure with you!

How about leave it the hell alone, and enjoy it for what it is, a fun anomaly and sumpin' you can share with others?

mtgoat666 - 1-19-2019 at 06:27 PM

I doubt that stick has been there more than 20 years, 30 years max. Exposed to elements, wood weathers pretty quickly.
Stick Probably impaled in tree by wind or person throwing it.

facing away from the road is a good sign - it points somewhere new

Well you do have a point there.... wonder how long it would last being off the ground and in the desert?

First saw it in 2017 so if I check on it every 10 years or so... it should be rotted by 2050 at the latest....

Very interesting!
