Bajahoops - 3-9-2019 at 12:31 PM

Dose anyone have a G P S file of the Missions Between Guerrero Negro and Loreto ? USR file would be best . It is for my Lowrance . I know there are I believe 9 Missions between these points . There are 12 of us heading down from S F on 3/15 . I have been all over Baja lived here the last 20 years but I have never mapped the Missions . Any help would be great . Thanks !!!

If you drill down on this site, using Google Earth, GPS locations are given.

USR from the KML

John M - 3-9-2019 at 08:29 PM

Bajahoops - I converted it from the KML to a .usr and it does show the missions -there is no route associated as far as I can tell.

I'm sure you can do the same conversion but let me know if this is you are looking for.

From north to south:
Here are all the Baja Sur missions... Two are just south of the latitude of Loreto.

San Ignacio
Guadalupe
Mulegé
La Purísima
San José de Comondú (2 locations)
Loreto
San Javier
Ligüí
San Luis Gonzaga
Dolores (2 sites)
Pilar de la Paz (3 sites)
Santa Rosa (Todos Santos)
Santiago (2 sites)
San José del Cabo

Can I recommend you get my book? GPS for all sites included. www.oldmissions.com or Amazon or any book dealer.

There are other mission-era sites, as well.

I did an article after driving the "mssion loop" out from Loreto which may be interesting as it combines off roading and mission sites (Loreto, Ligüí, San Javier, Comondú, La Purísima, Comondú Viejo, & Visita de Londó)... 2-3 days if you move along. Hiking needed only for Comondú Viejo: https://www.bajabound.com/bajaadventures/bajatravel/driving_...

sweet David! I was just going to ask if there was a driving route to connect these missions, we just picked up a little 4x4 Ranger and this sounds like a fun adventure, gonna throw some camping mattress in the back and hit the road!

"Comondú is reached by traveling back north from San Javier for 4 miles, to a junction at Km. 27.5 (unsigned in February 2017). "

FYI they have replaced this sign, though its kind of off the road a bit, its about ~10 meters up the actual turnoff itself, I noticed it when I was coming back from San Javier the other day

David K - 3-11-2019 at 01:13 PM

Signs come and go... It is a pretty major junction but if you wanted to get to Comondú, then you will find it! Most simply stay on the pavement between Loreto and San Javier... Keeping the good stuff less traveled!

Enjoy the Baja Mission Loop trip!

There is a boutique hotel in San Miguel Comondú and there is the little place in La Purísima I stayed at... There is also another place in La Purísima that you can check out. The place is worthy of more time than I had to explore.

Sounds as if the road from La Purísma east to Hwy. 1 was been improved? It was very rough and slow driving for me in 2017.

The hike to see Comondú Viejo is well worth it if you want to see the 1708-1736 mission site, all overgrown and nearly invisible. I wish I stayed there longer and took more photos!

In addition to the Baja Mission Loop article, I also did one specific about Comondú Viejo: https://www.bajabound.com/bajaadventures/bajatravel/comondu_...

David's book is fantastic.

David K - 3-12-2019 at 12:15 AM

Thank you BajaMama...I appreciate the feedback! I more appreciate that it will make you Baja time even more special because you will know who, what, where, when, and why + how these amazing Masonic projects were undertaken.

I have sold or distributed to vendors over 1000 copies, twice my expectation! I think this final box of 60 new books will be the end of the project? Nice reviews on Amazon have been great!

Nothing defines California as significantly or emotionally as the missions and history of the old El Camino Real mission trail. The mission trail, and California history, starts almost a thousand miles south of the California border in Loreto Mexico, in Baja California; indeed, the California peninsula was the only California for at least 230 years before "Baja" was added to the name in 1769. The author, David Kier, does a remarkable job of chronicling the Jesuit, Franciscan, and Dominican missionaries and the missions they founded in Baja California. "Baja California Land of Missions" is superbly written and researched, with over a hundred photos, maps, and drawings. Kier's summary of the nearly 200 missionaries who served in Baja California between 1683 and 1855, is a unique, and incredibly useful, historical resource. Designed to fit nicely in a pocket, or console compartment - this is a "must-have" guide for any one traveling the Baja Peninsula, especially for the adventurer and explorer who takes delight in veering off the pavement, and into the wild ... and into the lives and dreams of men of the past.

In one slim volume David Kier has captured, not just the history of a place, but its heart as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Must have book for Baja travelers interested in History!

found the book to be a well researched and documented history of the Missions of Baja California. Lots of interesting information, corrections of older research, etc. well photographed, often with a photo history series dating back to the 1030s. I also found amazing that I got immediate responses from the author when I contacted him asking for more information.
If you are a Baja traveler, and interested in History, this should be one of your go-to books!
Kier's book is a great introduction to the Catholic missions in Baja California, Mexico. I am currently walking the California missions. and after reading this book wish the El Camino Real was clearly marked in Baja California so that I could walk it. I do wish that more support was given for the author's comments about the differing opinions about the religious orders who founded missions in Baja California and their interactions with the natives.

Thank you!!!

A lifetime of interest and passion for the hard work to build these amazing sites in such a hard and remote land coupled with my desire to get the historical facts accurately told, plus wonderful editing assistance by John M, great cover-artwork by Taco Felix, and photos contributed by Nomads such as Jack Swords, academicanarchist, BajaOkie, and others, made this book impossible to not succeed. The book publishing is sponsored by Baja Bound Insurance... Many thanks to Baja Geoff and company!
Thank you all!

I have about 65 copies left from the November 2018 printing of 200 copies (which contains updated photos and data from my 2017 and 2018 Baja trips). For a signed copy: www.oldmissions.com

Otherwise, they are sold at Amazon, Discover Baja Travel Club, Sunbelt Publications (my official distributor, if you are a book dealer), BarnesAndNoble.com, and at several book stores and gift shops. Also, as a fundraiser for his Desert Hawks, the Baja Cactus Motel front desk has them (I left a dozen on Presidents Day when I stayed there with the TV show crew).
