I have friends staying in their place in the South Campos area (Bahia Santa Maria). They tried to go into San Felipe this morning but were turned back at a road block. No one allowed in to San Felipe, at least from the south on Hwy 5.

No word on who was manning the roadblock. Cell service very sketchy down there, south of town.

David K - 3-28-2019 at 05:45 PM

Funny, but Mary (from Playa Mexico) drove to town today and posted a photo (South Campos Amigos Facebook page) of the black smoke from the harbor area. She must have just made it in or was there before the action?
Someone else on FB from San Felipe said it's all over, just like nothing happened... move along... lol.

Sadly, the Fisherman shot this morning has died from his injuries. A video posted to Facebook by one of the locals I know shows calm not at least along the Malecon. Not sure what will happen now that there has been a death. The black smoke has died down and dissipated. It's a sad day here in San Felipe.

Cecilia R Duclos IT was a shooting due to fishermen-navy confrontation, fishermen burned some boats at the Marina and trowed rocks at the navy base, is done, nothing to do with the town in general. The fishermen were requesting for the navy soldier that had wounded the fisherman earlier so they can bring them to justice... in general the town pretty mucho Is quiet again, so no worries and come down and enjoy your weekend

Marina details

PaulW - 3-29-2019 at 07:30 AM

Marina area showing the layout
Boats burned include those of the fisherman and those of the navy.
As in interesting aside across from the new navy base the last week. the navy put up tents for housing for the guards protecting the new go-fast boats that arrived in a recent period. Those boats were still on the trailers and were not ready for operation. They were all burned.
I cannot find the location where the confiscated fishermen boats were stored. Pretty sure is was nearby. Fortunately, many of those boats were drug away from the fires that consumed the other ones.
Other fishermen boats were burned, one on the navy ramp and unknown others just east of the new navy base. It is all shown on the videos I posted. Yup, long videos.

I am not finding any confirmation that the fisherman who was shot was killed. Navy is saying that it was an accidental discharge of a weapon in the course of a physical struggle. But the articles I have seen (mostly mainland, of course) are saying that the shooting only resulted in injuries. Naturally, this is going through a translator, too.

David K - 3-29-2019 at 07:56 AM

Chuckie, first Hook then the norte/goat duo asked about or mentioned Facebook posts... I did not initiate Facebook conversation but I will try to help travelers get the facts if I can. The only funny part is the irony on how simple news gets exploited or dramatized. Hope you have a great day, sunny and will be in the 70s in SoCal today.

PaulW - 3-29-2019 at 08:11 AM

Several posts on San Felipe and Baja Facebook said the fisherman nicknamed "Kiki" passed away after arrival at the hospital. I just searched and cannot Find those messages. For sure he was shot and was in pretty bad shape based on the videos.
The Internet is always correct - right.

MEXICALI, Baja California (GH)
The family of the fisherman who received multiple bullets, demanded the authorities to do justice, accusing that they had already had conflicts with the elements of the Secretariat of the Navy (Semar), who were taking away their tools to fish.

José Demetrio Soberanes Sández, brother of Enrique García Sández, explained that his morning started in the worst way, when he was informed of the conflict in which Enrique had practically killed Enrique himself.

"They shot my brother, the Navy ran around and started shooting him because he did not stop," Soberanes explained, while waiting for information about Enrique's health condition at the General Hospital of Mexicali (HGM). He said that the attack took place on the mainland, on a highway at around 8:30 am, when García and his fishermen colleagues moved to the sea to carry out their work day. "They made the stop, they gave him, they hit the cars, and they started firing; he came behind the car, he came with four or five more people, "explained the also fisherman from San Felipe. Demetrio commented that that is the routine of him and his brother, they were going to fish "Chano", nevertheless already there had been conflicts with the authorities, who took away their networks whenever they could.

"They were fishing well, they were just going to work, to fish 'Chano', it is the normal routine every day they did it," he said. "Yes there were conflicts with the Navy, from outside in the sea they wanted to remove the hammocks, every day is the same, they take away the hammocks, they do not let us work," he argued.

"They talked to me and told me I was in the hospital, but there were videos, everything is recorded," the fisherman said with a look of concern for his brother's health.

He recalled that after the incident, he was stabilized in San Felipe, the wounds were on one arm, one leg, and a scratch on the head. He mentioned that from that moment, the atmosphere was raging in San Felipe, and that it was apparently that more detonations were triggered that wounded two other people from the port. "It's a lot of chaos, we want justice to be done," he demanded.

In addition, he pointed out that Enrique García is a fisherman by profession for 15 years, and a father of a family.

SERIOUS WOUND
On the fisherman Enrique García Sández, the medical reports explain that he has a wound on the scalp, another bullet wound on the left forearm, a fracture due to another bullet wound in the right leg and loss of surrounding tissue. After being transferred from San Felipe to the General Hospital of Mexicali (HGM), he underwent a compressive treatment and volume restitution through solutions, the fisherman was operated in the operating room. The second injured is the minor Ricardo Zúñiga, 17, who presented multiple bullet wounds, who stabilized in San Felipe and transferred to hospital 30 of the IMSS in Mexicali.

A woman of the third age was a collateral victim of the confrontation, Rosa María Zaragoza González, 65 years old. The lady presented a type of red spot lesion (superficial wound) in the abdomen below the umbilicus, covering an area of six by two centimeters. She was treated in the San Felipe unit without having to travel to Mexicali.

The health status of Enrique García is serious, however the health experts said that he was being operated in the operating room after noon. According to the information provided to this medium until the end of the edition, Enrique García, has a reserved prognosis for the damage of his injuries, to the Emergency Department of the HGM, his family went to await a clinical diagnosis, including his wife, brother and cousins.

Second report
La Cronicia By: Saul D.Martinez | 03/29/2019 6:37
MEXICALI, Baja California (GH)
A dozen shots broke the silence of dawn. In the box of a pickup truck, on Gulf of California Avenue, a fisherman was seriously wounded. "They killed the Kiki," a man shouted as he held a phone with which he recorded a video.

All this happened after a chase that occurred after a boat belonging to "Sea Shepherd" , was attacked by fishermen from a boat trying to recover prohibited fishing gear that the Navy followed, and try to escape, according to information from the military institution.

The Marína via communication reported that during this meeting, the alleged offenders of the law opposed resistance and there were struggles with the naval personnel, with the unfortunate result of an accidental firing of a firearm that caused injuries to a person. Regarding the Health Centers, it was reported that a teenager and a 65-year-old woman were also treated.

THE VERSIONS
The report to the emergency numbers was received at 07:52. The elements of the Navy, aboard the unit with number 200424, allegedly persecuted the fishermen and even interposed them at the pass. The fishermen's truck hit them by reach.

The shots had already been executed before the collision. The sailors came down with the rifles and were rebuked by the fishermen, the fishermen point out. Other fishermen arrived at the site in their vans and the sailors, without giving an answer, tried to return to their patrol to leave. One of the elements was retained by two fishermen, but with the detonation to the ground of the rifle of one of his companions they let him go, it is seen in a video.

Although the fishermen tried to prevent them from setting up in front of the unit, the elements made their way and fled the place, pursued by fishermen on Puerto Vallarta street.

Enrique García Sandez, 37, was the injured fisherman who was in the pickup box. After being injured by the sailors, the truck arrived at the IMSS clinic, located on Avenida Mar de Cortez Sur.

After a few minutes, the clinic staff gave him first aid. Preliminarily it was said that he had a bullet wound in the skull, another in the left forearm and another bullet wound in the right leg, at the level of the femur.

The medical center began to surround itself with police, ministerial and elements of the Navy. Soon other injured people began to arrive, including a 17-year-old teenager named Ricardo Zúñiga.

A 65-year-old woman, identified as Rosa María Zaragoza González, who was in the street at the time of the shooting, was treated in San Felipe for a bullet in the belly, while the other two fishermen were transferred to Mexicali.

After a few minutes, fishermen began to demonstrate outside the clinic. Others were on their way to the dock, where minutes later the fire started. The fishermen allegedly were two kilometers north of San Felipe fishing "chano", when they were chased away by the detonations of the rifle of a Navy element aboard the Sea Shepherd vessel.

When they returned to land, a Navy patrol intercepted them, but they ignored it and did not stop. After this, the shooting occurred. At least this is the preliminary version of the fishermen that could be known, through the leader of fishermen, Sunshine Antonio Rodríguez Peña. PROTESTS

Dozens of fishermen and residents of San Felipe moved to the Naval Sector of San Felipe, after the injured received first aid at the IMSS clinic and their departure to Mexicali was scheduled. On the outskirts of the Naval Sector, fishermen and angered Protestants began to ask for explanations for what happened, but also asked to be handed over to the four elements involved in the aggression.

Several elements of the Navy in riot gear prevented them from entering. Suddenly, the stones began to fall.

There was not a single vehicle parked on the outskirts of the barracks that did not suffer from severe material damage, even one of them was completely burned. While the fishermen threw stones, they were returned by the sailors from inside the barracks.

The confrontation ended when a representative of the Navy spoke with the fishing leaders in the place. By then, more than twenty vehicles had been affected.

ON FIRE
The column of black smoke was visible for miles before arriving in San Felipe. In the dock of this port, dozens of boats were prey of the fire that had ignited fishermen inflamed by what happened this Thursday morning. For almost an hour, the fishermen demolished the perimeter fence of cyclonic mesh in which were boats of the Federal Attorney's Office for Environmental Protection (Profepa) and other pangas seized in recent months.

Several vans with trailers arrived at the site and the fishermen started taking out the insured boats and took them away. Also in the boats of the Profepa there was rapine by some of the demonstrators.

The flames consumed 98% of what was in this property, before the distant eyes of the elements of the Navy and municipal police that only limited to maintain an idle presence.

It was not until one o'clock in the afternoon that the fire chief of Mexicali, Gabriel Gómez Ruiz, arrived and spoke with some of the demonstrators, so that they allowed two fire engines and a cistern to approach the fire.

By then, the fishermen, some with gill nets, pangas, engines, parts of boats, among others, had already left the dock.

CALM OF ANIMALS
Fishing leaders managed to enter the facilities of the Naval Search and Rescue Station (ENSAR), where they spoke with naval commanders about what happened on Thursday morning. According to Sunshine Antonio Rodríguez Peña, the authorities undertook to resolve the issue and bring the elements involved to justice, if the results of the investigations so warranted.

At the doors of the ENSAR, one of his colleagues threw a dozen percussed shells that allegedly fired the Navy elements against him. Rodríguez Peña said that they expect the Ministry of the Navy to inform them of the results of this investigation and to act in accordance with the Law.

These events occur less than a week after the legal fishermen decided to leave the sea again, breaking a ban of almost 4 years, and two days before the president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, will visit San Luis Río Colorado, where He promised support to fishermen.

FISHERMEN AGREED TO RECOVER NETWORK: SECRETARIAT OF MARINA
"The Secretariat of the Navy Navy of Mexico informs the public, that today in San Felipe, Baja California, the vessel" Sharpie ", belonging to" Sea Shepherd ", was attacked by fishermen of a boat that was trying to recover prohibited fishing gear, which had been raised in the protected area of the vaquita marina by the "Sharpie".

Then, after recovering their nets, the fishing vessel fled to San Felipe. In view of this, and within the framework of the "Comprehensive Program for the Care of the Upper Gulf of California", this Institution deployed an Intercepting Patrol and Marine Infantry personnel in the number one fishing camp in San Felipe, where fishermen's personnel arrived at board of the aggressor vessel, which was towed by a vehicle with the intention of fleeing.

Before this, naval personnel made maneuvers of dissuasion to try to insure the vehicle with the boat and arrest the alleged offenders, however, during these actions a vehicle of this Institution was impacted.

It should be noted that, during this meeting, the alleged offenders of the law opposed resistance and there were struggles with the naval personnel, with the unfortunate result of an accidental firing of a firearm that caused injuries to a person, which caused a greater concentration of people who attacked the naval elements, who withdrew to avoid a confrontation.

After these events, the group of people concentrated in the vicinity of the naval facilities, to demonstrate violently, throwing objects and Molotov c-cktails, causing damage to various buildings of the Semar and the burning of a vehicle and two smaller boats.

Also, there is information that other people were injured in the demonstration. It should be noted that the competent authority has been given a hearing, who will carry out the corresponding investigations, in order to define responsibilities, always adhering to the law.

This Secretariat will collaborate in everything necessary with the authorities responsible for providing justice in our country, with the conviction that, under no circumstances, this institution justifies conduct contrary to the Law and Human Rights, so that in case of accreditation will be sanctioned by the corresponding instances according to their severity ".

Enrique2012 - 3-29-2019 at 11:25 AM

What troubling times these are when a poacher of endangered species, who sets navy boats on fire and throws rocks at navy personnel, can be shot!

Just kidding! I wish more of them had been shot and their pangas sunk in deep water.
