Garmin InReach Costco Sale

HeyMulegeScott - 4-11-2019 at 09:10 AM

$219 for the base model now. If you are a regular traveler to Baja and other off-grid areas these are a must. https://www.costco.com/Garmin-inReach-SE%2b-Satellite-Commun...

David K - 4-11-2019 at 09:53 AM

Fantastic! These are the bomb in Baja. Uses the Iridium satellites so no blank areas like Spot suffers and you have two-way communication instead of just sending your location and sos.

Hook - 4-11-2019 at 01:02 PM

Really sounds like Costco is discontinuing these, with their "while supplies last" caveat. Is this aged technology?

Hook - 4-11-2019 at 01:17 PM

The cheapest "safety" subscription plan is 11.95/month on a yearly contract (plus 19.95 activation fee) or 14.95 month with no activation fee and choose the 30 days you want. Cancel and re up another 30 days later.

These are the current model. Probably just a limited quantity they negotiated a great deal on.

Howard - 4-11-2019 at 07:18 PM

Just ordered one, thanks for the heads up. I guess their "while supply last" supply was quite large.

After thinking about it, having one on the boat down here and the drives to the border seems like a good peace of mind for family and friends.

It's great when you can buy peace of mind.

BajaMama - 4-13-2019 at 08:00 AM

I have an older Garman Nuvi with Mexico on it, it seems to have all the roads on it. Does this have something more?

David K - 4-13-2019 at 08:21 AM

It is a two-way communicator (text message or email) as well as a tracking device you can let your friends see where you are anytime. Has an emergency rescue service signal, as well. It has a map screen but also pairs with a smartphone which has a bigger and full-color map screen.

larryC - 4-13-2019 at 03:26 PM

Will it tie in with google earth so you can see where you are any where on the planet? Or can you do that with google maps? Just looking for a real time gps display.

Too late?

AKgringo - 4-13-2019 at 03:40 PM

I just tried the link posted, and got, "Sorry, product not found"

David K - 4-13-2019 at 06:41 PM

Larry, no. It has a map screen but with the EarthMate ap a better, color map shows your position. You can zoom in and out. I have posted samples during my mapping trips, in my Trip reports.

AK, it was there before and now it is gone. As they say, if you snooze you lose!

HeyMulegeScott - 4-14-2019 at 08:26 AM

This was a great deal, they're a hundred dollars more on Amazon - https://amzn.to/2D9eiIT

mtgoat666 - 4-14-2019 at 09:30 AM

Message transmission on these is unreliable. Failed and delayed messages are common. I suspect the problems are not being fixed because there is no investment being made by garnin and irridium to improve crappy software, servers and obsolete satellites. Probably not investing new $ because the business is bleeding money, cant find people to throw money into failing venture.

Perhaps Worst of all is the message interface. Where is the keyboard for ease of typing?

David K - 4-14-2019 at 09:54 AM

Not at all true during my 8 research trips of 3-14 days in Baja.

The keyboard is on the cell phone, when mated to one using the Earthmate Ap

Just last month, I exchanged many messages with a Nomad during his trip south (remember my asking about a special truck tire size for him in the Santa Rosalia to Loreto area?).

Howard - 4-14-2019 at 10:29 AM

$270, no shipping and probably no tax.

I do not know this seller.

I dont need gps/comm in my car. Only want it hiking or kayaking. If i have to pair it with phone, is useless for hiking or kayaking. I certainly dont want to carry extra wt hiking.

The comm is unreliable, despite your limited success.

Product needs improvement.

I use mine all the time. Mostly just use the preset messages to check-in with my wife and friends. No issues except for a delay once in a slot canyon in Baja and a dense forest in Oregon. Which model have you used?

WestyWanderer - 4-14-2019 at 10:09 PM

I am also very happy with mine and have used it with great success while chasing for races all over the peninsula. Both preset and custom messages have always worked great. Take longer than typical cellphone messages but mine have always gone through.

Yeah, why let practical, user knowledge, get in the way of your speculation on the unit?

basautter - 4-20-2019 at 12:31 PM

I have been waiting for a sale on the latest. Thanks for the heads up! This type of device will cap off a lot of missing person reports. Unfortunately, not all...

Jack Swords - 4-20-2019 at 01:37 PM

Living next to Vandenberg AFB we have seen the recent Iridium satellite launches from SpaceX using the Falcon 9 rocket. 75 Satellites have been deployed over the past 2 years. 9 satellites are in-orbit spares, six are spares on the ground. New satellites are swapping out old ones. Iridium has invested $3 billion to replace its network with a state of the art network. Your statements about no investment by Iridium and obsolete equipment is simply not correct.

Enrique2012 - 4-20-2019 at 02:12 PM

Jack, Baja Nomad has a resident clown car that cruises through the forums. It's a two-seat clown car, occupied by Goat666 and JJJ.

Pay no attention to anything they write.

Are you retarded? You connect your phone via bluetooth and use its keyboard.

And there is an amazing amount of investment going on with satellite communications.

Use an app like Gaia or Back Country Navigator for that. BCN is my favorite. Has all the topo and satellite maps. Super easy to import waypoints and tracks from GE.

Spot has 2-way communication now. But I did read it is limited to 41 characters per message. Inreach is 160.

HeyMulegeScott - 5-7-2019 at 07:49 AM

Back in stock at Costco.com for $289. A buck cheaper on Amazon https://amzn.to/2Y7CiEk You can't beat the Costco return policy if you are a member.

JZ - 5-7-2019 at 11:13 AM

I would actually get the Inreach Mini over the SE+. The real value of these things is the 2-way communications. Not the maps and GPS. Your phone has a 10x better screen/user input for maps and GPS than any Garmin device.

The SE+ is still pushing Garmin's chitty GPS/maps/screen. The mini is more just raw communications.

David K - 5-7-2019 at 11:22 AM

But, you can couple the Garmin with your smartphone, get a bigger, color map screen and have the full texting keyboard of your phone. It wirelessly mates with the inReach up to about 20 feet away.
While I was cozy in my room some nights, texting with family and friends, the inReach was on the dashboard in my truck doing the satellite communicating.

You can do that with the mini as well. I''m not using the Garmin for maps, tracks, sharing tracks, etc. Garmin is antiquated.

I use my Inreach with Earthmate map on my 8" Android tablet. Good maps are available by choosing the area of interest and downloading them. Detail is good with many back seldom traveled roads.
Overall the screen is pretty good. Better than Google maps or Maps.me as far as detail and viewing. Of course it much better than a phone due to size.
Even when I do not mate my Inreach to Earthmate its map is functional and has the usual cursor where you are at.
IMO, the Earthmate is one of the best large GPS I have tested.
