Really great history and recent updates since Greg's previous article on the Clam Man.

Anyone who went to San Felipe in the 1970s or 80s would know about the Clam Man!

I remember in the early 70's "camping" at that beach camp with the pool hall, I think it was called "Playa Laura" and I also remember going to "Clam Man" for their daily special: clams.

Excellent story, Thanks Greg.

I remember him walking down the beach selling clams, then adding the helpful information: "The Clam Man is not dead yet!" Also, he showed me how to grill clams on the barby -- something we still do today.

Cool.
Back in the day, the Clam Man would wave at all the folks driving into town from his barber's chair.

I'm wondering if Greg's Dad, Gus, was "The Greeter" in Laguna Beach ?
He sure looks like him

If makes me think of Andy...

For BajaRun: No, he was not the official Greeter, but when Eiler Larsen (the Greeter) died, the city wanted my dad to take his place. My dad refused, saying he's rather be walking the beach than standing on a corner all day. Thanks for asking.

My parents used to talk about the greeter, and as a kid of about 8, (~1965) I saw him as we drove into town.

When we saw the clam man, who waved to visitors arriving in San Felipe, the Laguna Beach Greeter was mentioned.

Early '80s first time I ever camped on San Felipe beach. One morning we hear someone walking up the beach shouting "clams"

My girlfriend was from New Orleans and loved any shellfish so we waved him over to our camper. He showed her the best ones to pick out of the bag while standing there with his whale bone walking stick.
I went and grabbed my camera and took this one shot. He put his hand out and said that will be one dollar please (for taking his picture). He surprised me with his good English and sense of humor. I asked him where he was from and he said Chicago. Funny guy and we enjoyed the fresh clams.
