Coco's Corner by 2WD sedan I don't want to beat the sh*t out of...?

4x4abc - 4-28-2019 at 05:30 PM

I have seen a lot of small 2WD cars going either direction.
Most do OK (careful driver)
others needed repairs at Laguna Chapala tire shop
I remember a particular small rental driven by a French couple that needed 2 days worth of repairs

Just under 13 miles, graded dirt and paved road. If rough, just drive slower.

Ken Cooke - 4-28-2019 at 06:25 PM

Be sure to carry a spare tire. Take it slowly as the road is very rough.

bajatrailrider - 4-28-2019 at 07:03 PM

Most of the paved roads are wrose.

gueribo - 4-28-2019 at 07:19 PM

Blew out a (truck) tire along that route . . . bring spares. But I've seen 2WD vehicles coming and going on that road.

advrider - 4-28-2019 at 08:22 PM

No problem, you will need to go slow and avoid some of the exposed rocks. I would have some kind tire pump and a few plugs just in case.

JZ - 4-28-2019 at 09:57 PM

It's not that rough. You will be find. All kinds of vehicles going through there.

David K - 4-28-2019 at 10:33 PM

JZ is correct and the paved part is new, not pot holes or washed out like north of Gonzaga.

?
Hwy. 1 to Coco's: I measured it as 12.9 miles. 4.5 miles were paved in August 2018 (in the Chapala Valley).

In 2010, before any new highway work in that section, AAA measured it at 13.3 miles:

Weell I passed a Porsche on my way north about 2 weeks ago going through that section. Would lower tire pressure though on 2X2. In my humble opinion the road from Puerto to Gonzaga is worse. I think you will be fine. There are sand tracks on the side of the road that are smooth, if your car has low clearence there will be some spots where ya just go slow and easy.

thebajarunner - 4-29-2019 at 06:05 PM

The semis from Los Pinos do it all day, and all night long,
My F150 does it at 50-60 mph,
Of course the road is smoother at that speed.
I would take my Porsche there, but not likely to take it down across the border.
My Ford feels much more comfy than the German car on Baja roads.

You can rent a nice compact car in San Diego. Be sure to air down in that stretch.

Slow, you'll be fine. Go and enjoy.

BajaMama - 4-30-2019 at 06:02 AM

Go really slow in the few miles before Coco's - very rocky.

fishbuck - 4-30-2019 at 09:40 AM

If you have a small spare and need it you won't like it.
Learn where the closest tire shop is to Coco's.
You'll need it.

The tire shop is at Laguna Chapala, where the road to Coco's meets Hwy. 1, across the highway (Km. 233.5).

fishbuck - 4-30-2019 at 10:28 AM

Ok cool... I haven't needed that one yet:P

bent-rim - 5-4-2019 at 09:55 AM

I've been in the middle of no where on a dirt bike and I'll run across families in beater Toyota's bouncing along the road.

We went from the Hwy 1 Chapala turnoff to Mexicali July 2017 in a Dodge Magnum (very low clearance, that big tope in Guerro Negro is always a challenge), a bit slow going but no problems. i think it was about 90 minutes to get from Hwy 1 to Gonzaga. The vados north of Gonzaga were much worse, but I understand they are working on that section now.

I've been driving Porsches for 50 years. I wouldn't take mine but it's not impossible.
