Papa Fernandez

BajaDanD - 5-4-2019 at 03:08 AM

Thinking about going down to Gonzaga first week of June and taking my new boat does anyone have any personal experience with launching at Papa Fernandez. Or is there anywhere else in Gonzaga area to launch I have a 19ft Bayrunner it's aluminum so under the right conditions I could beach launch it

basautter - 5-4-2019 at 04:44 AM

There is a good shore launch location about 1/4 mile south of Alfonsina's into the estuary. You have to wait for a higher tide though. I have launched my 16 foot Klamath there and have seen boats up to about 22 feet launched without issues. Have fun!

Papa's ramp is fine, they're charging a few bucks now but you have a safe place to leave your car and trailer while ripping lips...salud:coolup:

You need to pay attention to the tides. You can't launch or retrieve at low tide ,too shallow.

BajaDanD - 5-4-2019 at 06:50 PM

I have no problem paying to launch and park my truck and trailer
Looks like the tides are not good for the week I was going so now i might go the following week.

Fishing at Gonzaga Bay

Rick Johnson - 5-5-2019 at 03:49 PM

Have fished East Cape (Los Barriles) for years, but know little about the fishery in and around Bahia Gonzaga. Not a bill fisherman...just like to eat 'em. Best time of the year for Yellowtail, Dorado....(Yellowfin...??). What else on the top and/or bottom..?? And, then, of course....any decent shore fishin'...??

Thanks, guys...

Check Bloodydecks.
My Capitan Juan from San Quintin just fished for a month and is moving his camp to BOLA now. He posted many beautiful fish including a 200lb grouper or black sea bass.
He comes home to San Quintin for summer and fishes the Pacific.

Is this "the" Rick Johnson of Motocross Champion fame?

The tides can be tricky. Fished with Captain Juan last month and with help from the Papa clan, we finally got in the water at a secondary spot to the right of the ramp as you look out at the water. Have camped and fished there often and I love the vibe of the place...up and over the hill to camp on the water and they leave you alone yet you have some around if need be.

I've been to la Bay many times we are going to Gonzaga in June
We are towing a boat down there this year and want to know what the road conditions are like for towing a boat if anybody has towed a boat down there recently how was the road

I will be on it Monday. Will post when I get Internet after.

BajaDanD - 5-11-2019 at 03:47 PM

Thanks David but are you towing a boat
There has to be somebody on here that has towed a boat to Gonzaga in the last few months or sence the 2 Hurricanes in October that messed up to roads so badly

David K - 5-11-2019 at 07:16 PM

I will be a passenger in a Raptor, so no.
I have towed before... I can tell you the degree of roughness compared to other years or roads in Baja. That I reply does not prevent another Nomad who has towed a boat from responding.
Did you see the video of the motorhome towing a Jeep that was just over the road to Gonzaga and beyond?
The detours around the ex-bridges look really smooth, and they were not bothered.

Looks like the bridge needs some work...

David K - 5-13-2019 at 05:38 AM

Good morning from San Felipe! The sea gulls are up... Looks great outside. The word is we are headed to Mulegé today. I think with the added truck that met us here, we are 5 Raptors. now.

BajaDanD - 5-13-2019 at 10:47 AM

Should I air down the tires on my trailer like I do on my truck when I'm driving on bad dirt roads.
Has anyone here done that before

yes you should - makes the trailer less bouncy
go down about 1/3 of normal

however, on trailers carrying a heavy load you might need max tire pressure to maintain the load carrying capacity of the tires

redhilltown - 5-13-2019 at 04:00 PM

The problem is as to airing down too much is that there just some breaks in the main road where you go on dirt (mostly where the bridges washed out)...and the dirt is not THAT bad...but then you get back up onto the blacktop with squishy tires. Unless you're going past Gonzaga you won't hit long pockets of dirt where airing down will make any difference to your "bounce"...but you probably should a little. It's really not that bad and the pangeros tow through there all the time and let's just say their equipment may not be state of the art.
