Please report on San Ysidro crossing on 5/14

John Harper - 5-12-2019 at 08:20 AM

It took me two hours a couple weeks ago. That was the regular lanes.

When are your appointments? What road are you taking to TJ? Those are kind of important factors.

John

David K - 5-12-2019 at 08:30 AM

When discussing border crossing issues it may be helpful to state if it is the northbound or southbound border crossing.

LukeJobbins - 5-12-2019 at 10:47 AM

Southbound is fairly bad in the afternoons and evenings because the 5 is two lanes and the 805 is down to one.

Northbound has no changes from the past months(Years?)

apple - 5-12-2019 at 11:22 AM

Driving across at San Ysidro or Otay, the chance of being 'interrogated' are incredibly slim. It is basically the same as it has been for the past 5+ years, you just drive up to a automatic gate thing with a light that says red or green and then 99% you get the green light and drive in to Mexico.
I crossed south at SY around 5pm 3 Fridays ago and there was traffic, but it only took 20ish minutes to get through.

**I just saw someone else mentioned new roads on the 5 that lead to the Mexico entrance. I guess I didn't know anything about that.

Sounds like they are just widening the lanes on the US side so there is less of a choke point at the turn: https://www.nbcsandiego.com/news/local/San-Ysidro-Port-of-En...

Nevermind, I don't know what I'm talking about. It does look like there will be 'southbound inspection points' on the USA side on the map there

SFandH - 5-12-2019 at 11:40 AM

Have the Americans implemented the planned southbound inspections at San Ysidro? I haven't read any reports about that.

Regardless, get to TJ before 3 PM to avoid the afternoon southbound commuters.

chippy - 5-12-2019 at 12:41 PM

You are aware that you could get xrayed by the Mexicans going south? I did on April 27th 7 pm. It added an extra 1/2 hour to the crossing.

Yeah but if our goons are stopping every car going south it's going to be a nightmare. Be just like coming north at SY and soon every other crossing will have a SB check I bet.

I say June 1 2020 shovels in ground for Tecate, Mexicali West and possibly Otay for SB check points. Mexicali East won't be far behind.

Hope I'm wrong!

LukeJobbins - 5-12-2019 at 09:10 PM

I cross a lot and yesterday the new inspection area did not look even close to opening. I would be impressed if they get it open and running soon. I’ll update tomorrow when I cross again if anything looks funky. But the main worry is the traffic from the 805 bottleneck to one lane.

BajaMama - 5-13-2019 at 08:14 AM

I'm crossing SB 5/22 San Ysidro. Hopefully before 8:00 AM. I'll report.

LukeJobbins - 5-13-2019 at 11:36 PM

It absolutely crazy how much stuff happens in tijuana and it just becomes business as usual in a matter of minutes. I crossed this evening and everything looked completely normal and the new inspection area looked really far from ready to open. Dirt piles, dirt roads not paved yet, all of the metal posts (border gate) still up.

willardguy - 5-14-2019 at 09:47 AM

first reports are in...everything going smoothly:D

but watch for speed bumps

From that page:
New southbound inspection lanes entering Tijuana by San Ysidro begin operation today A total of four new vehicle lanes entering Mexico from San Ysidro began operations today, Tuesday, May 14, 2019. The new access will connect the southbound lanes of Interstate 5 (I-5) with the facilities of El Chaparral in Tijuana. These new lanes will have inspection booths, operated by officers from the Customs and Border Protection Office (CBP), to carry out inspections for southbound travelers, similar to the inspections currently performed for travelers heading northbound across the border. The inspections in the new booths will be periodic and quick, as they were done previously. In total, there will eventually be ten new lanes connecting from the southbound I-5 into El Chaparral, but only four of these were opened beginning 7:00 AM this morning. The remainder of the lanes will be operational by the end of this year. "We are excited to reach another milestone for the San Ysidro Port of Entry renovation project. We hope to operate the southbound lanes and booths efficiently and safely while inspecting southbound travelers into Mexico. We hope to have this project completed by years end," said Pete Flores, CBP operations director in San Diego. The new lanes will also serve a critical step in taking biometric data from non-US travelers, as part of a mandate from the United States Congress, to record the departure of these individuals from the country.

This is dumb as hell

Ya think??!!!

Lee - 5-15-2019 at 12:35 PM

I shouldn't be surprised at the number of selfish people posting about their personal inconvenience in being delayed driving South.

The checkpoint is in place to deter money and arms getting into the hands of the wrong people.

How is this dumb and a bad idea?

Crybabies need to get a life!

I wonder what you would say if you crossed the border frequently.

People smuggling easily available American guns into Mexico is 100% a real problem! But why is the American government screening for that? Why can't the Mexican government do it?

Oh, it's because that's not what these inspection points are about. This is about screening and tracking non-citizens and probably US citizens as well.

Or get home after working all day. 99% of southbound crossers are workers.

willardguy - 5-15-2019 at 01:10 PM

these sporadic inspections started 10 years ago, in two years they confiscated nearly ninety million bucks, a couple hundred weapons and twenty-five thousand rounds......dumb as hell you say?
relax, the tacos will still be here

apple - 5-15-2019 at 01:16 PM

I googled trying to find data like you posted. I suppose there are data indicating that this is a worthwhile effort but I couldn't find it. You wouldn't happen to have a link, would you?

Bingo! We have a winner! And what makes anyone think it is only for the non-US traveler?

apple - 5-15-2019 at 02:48 PM

The legal reasoning behind the Southbound Inspection points is from this law: DIVISION C-ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION REFORM AND IMMIGRANT RESPONSIBILITY ACT OF 1996
Quote:

C. 110. AUTOMATED ENTRY-EXIT CONTROL SYSTEM. (a) SYSTEM.-Not later than 2 years after the date of the enactment of this Act, the Attorney General shall develop an automated entry and exit control system that will- (1) collect a record of departure for every alien departing the United States and match the records of departure with the record of the alien's arrival in the United States; and (2) enable the Attorney General to identify, through on-line searching procedures, lawfully admitted nonimmigrants who remain in the United States beyond the period authorized by the Attorney General.

But Trump's travel (Muslim) ban added Biometric screenings to that, and required DHS to speed up the implementation of the screenings that had largely been ignored since that law was passed in 1996
Quote:
The executive order requires DHS to expedite the development of the biometric entry-exit screening system recommended by the 9-11 Commission.

apple - 5-15-2019 at 02:51 PM

Sec. 8. Expedited Completion of the Biometric Entry-Exit Tracking System. (a) The Secretary of Homeland Security shall expedite the completion and implementation of a biometric entry exit tracking system for in-scope travelers to the United States, as recommended by the National Commission on Terrorist Attacks Upon the United States.

I wonder what biometric data they will be collecting and from who/whom. Everybody? Face photos?

apple - 5-15-2019 at 05:01 PM

Face pics/scans and fingerprints, and just from non-citizens

ZipLine - 5-15-2019 at 05:08 PM

How was southbound? Anybody get the third degree? Or is it quick and easy? Are they stopping everyone? Do you need to show your passport card/passport?

"Did you pack that bag yourself?"

ZipLine - 5-15-2019 at 05:11 PM

There is a red light/green light system and a loudspeaker that barks instructions.. if you get a red light, it displays as a big red light in the shape of trump’s face blinking an angry red, and a loud speaker plays a recording of Donald trump shouting: “stop me!”

Biometrics will likely be for non-US travelers only, for now. No need to check IDs of the US citizens same thorough, increasing load on the border agents and equipment. Unless they have reasons to believe that your US passport is fake.
But, to sort US from non-US, they will need you to show your passport or scan RFID, and then your exit can be automatically logged in, whether you're US or non-US.

Right, because this is why they planned for, couldn't ever get worse... once they actually start manning the booths and all.

ZipLine - 5-16-2019 at 12:30 PM

Ahhh... I hadn't realized they had not yet started manning the booths. Then we can expect delays. Alright, hope that is a long time from now!

ZipLine - 5-16-2019 at 12:57 PM

I apologize for whining... I already wait two hours in one direction - not looking forward to a wait in the other direction.

Right now just foreigners, but tomorrow everybody with facial biometric technology, that doesn't always work, and in fact makes more mistakes with dark-skinned people, than white people, which is not really surprising.

Ever wonder why your taking a passport photo, or are in customs taking photos of yourself, and they tell you not to smile and remove your eye glasses?

It's because your big smile or eyeglasses could throw off the biometric information or measurements they have on you.

So it's not a perfect system as this time, and you just know Big Brother, doesn't always have your best interests in mind when they push for new technology, that's supposed to make things easier when you travel, but is also always ripe for human rights abuses.

San Francisco, got it right when they recently passed a facial recognition ban in their city.

ZipLine - 5-18-2019 at 11:15 AM

Much of the rest of the world is already using this technology. The UK and Europe have been doing it for years. UK citizens walk right in at airports with only a face scan. The US is way behind on much tech. Has been for a long time.

I was working in S. Korea in the early 2000s and people were already paying with their smartphones at Family Mart (similar to 7-11) there. Then - 12-15 years later USA announces "NEW" technology to pay by phone! Ha ha ha!

We need to catch up. We are SOoooo far behind.

Fine with me, there is something about all automated recognition technology I don't like. It is too 1984ish

And, I refuse to get a smartphone. Jeez, I don't even have a cell phone and don't want one.

ZipLine - 5-18-2019 at 11:32 AM

It might be 1984-ish, but it is here and has been here. Because the press has not reported it, does not mean it does not exist. They don't want us to know about it. Pretending it is not there, doesn't solve or prevent anything.

Not to worry, they are tracking you. Just be sure to smile at the cameras!

Udo - 5-23-2019 at 09:12 AM

I just crossed Southbound through the new entry process...easy-peazy. Just 5 very large speed bumps (topes), plus the regular cameras going off all over the place. Then this will immediately bring you to the SY port of entry's 20+ gates.
That said, the best gate crossing SY southbound is still the right hand lane, about 50' from the declaration office.
