Well done last night on America Unearthed!

David K - 5-29-2019 at 02:43 PM

Thank you Ted.
I am sorry that they used so little (about 4 minutes) of the 3-days of Baja filming!
It was used to add some validity that Vikings could have sailed around the peninsula and get to the Imperial Valley.
Maybe there will be an opportunity to use more of it for a future show? The tv film crew (Committee Films) really loved the location and everything about Baja... Scott Wolter was blown away by the size of the cardón cactus (you can hear me tell him that they get bigger). I am hoping to interest them to return and try and solve other mysteries (lost missions, the Diaz Grave location, etc.). Perhaps a new show: Baja Unearthed to consider? LOL
The show airs again Sunday, June 16 at 1 pm plus a couple of times in the middle of the night.
It was a lot of fun working with these guys, all from Minnesota. One of the cameramen was in Baja before during the 500 but the rest were all newbies.

EDIT: Photos and the trip report from the TV shoot are posted, here: http://forums.bajanomad.com/viewthread.php?tid=92242

Yes, indeed... On my first trip to Baja (without my parents) at 16, Easter Vacation, April 1974, Mission San Fernando was my first night's planned destination. I had never been there, plus I read about the petroglyphs nearby. I traveled with a high school friend, Pat Goforth in my VW Myers Manx dune buggy.

Here are the photos (converted from slides to digital) at San Fernando from 1974:

Pat's finger as he was pretty excited and had to point out one of the pertos as I was pressing the button, lol. Note the human figure next to his finger.

From San Fernando we went to El Mármol, El Vólcan, Calamajué, Gonzaga, and Nuevo Mazatlán, then home at the end of the week. While camping at Nuevo Mazatlán, we took a run into San Felipe which gave Pat a chance to ride up on the roof rack over the dirt road:

Here is a photo Pat took of me at the sulfur mine:

Good story

Congrates ! What fun.

Didn't see the show as I only have internet and the link wanted me to "sign up " and that's something I refuse to do...

But I'm enjoying reading and seeing the photos posted....

I watched the show and thought David did a good job. But, I can’t believe Vikings were sailing in or near Baja. That is beyond a stretch to think the image is a Viking boat. Looks more like an ancient dune buggy with a Hussongs sign on it.

Thanks and yes, it is a good story! I read in a Mexican publication that the object is called a "galleon" to the eyes of locals... I mean, what else could a big ship like that be... and there is a person up in the crow's nest.

The book that dated the site to 1000-1500 A.D. is 'Seven Rock Art Sites in Baja California' published in 1978...

Thank You!!

You my friend are a wealth of knowledge and Baja is much richer for all of us because you share it...

David K - 5-30-2019 at 06:45 PM

You are too kind!
I just have a great collection of books from the past 50 years of adding to my library and my crazy brain absorbs all this Baja stuff. It does no good to keep it inside my head as I think Baja is a great gift from the big guy above as it has such great curative powers. I always feel great when I am in Baja, don't you?
Thank you so much for enjoying this stuff.
