Shell Island 2017 forgot to post

hayb - 6-6-2019 at 06:00 PM

David K reminded me that I have been absent since 2016. Come to find out that I totally spaced it. Jun10-16th 2017 As usual our group throughly enjoyed our stay. Have lived in San Diego county since 1976. Moved to Washingtion St. 2018. Due to distance, we are looking to make the trip every other year. Starting in June of 2020. Here are some Phots of last trip. On a bummer of a note we lost our dog Hanky this year. He is in many of the previous trip pictures. We will sorely miss our Baja Buddy.

Sorry, I had to resize/compress my pictures as I hit the total size limit. So I can upload more pictures.

The long-fermented photos are even better -- looks like a fun trip. Do you anchor your EZ-Ups to the beach to keep them from flying away?

hayb - 6-6-2019 at 08:50 PM

StuckSucks, Yes we do anchor outer poles. Although when the wind speed approaches 20 mph range, we just lower them. Next step after that is to remove the tarps completley, we've done that few times in the past.

So nice to see you having so much fun on the island! You guys really camp in style, what with an ice maker and all!

We had a Memorial Day weekend camp in 2017 on the island... no wind, was nice.. until my step-son was hit by a stingray. It was a super low tide and he and my grandson were super far out walking in a few inches of water when it hit his foot. So much pain! Did the hot water treatment for a good hour + and tea tree oil to prevent infection.

We set up camp on the lagoon side of the island which is great, calm water for little kids and us, too...

Wow! Yes, you do camp in style.
Sorry your dog passed, looks like he had the best life possible <3

You ran an ice maker off 100 watts? I didn’t even know they made portable ice makers but that’s incredible.
Ever able to run anything like a blender off solar? I’ve never been able to, not even off 200 watts of solar.

Thank you for the pics, what is that in your old freezer? Cement blocks?

Thanks for the comforting words about our buddy.
That ice maker is hooked up to a battery powered dc to ac inverter. 100 watt solar panel seem to keep our battery topped off.
Those ice blocks actually did felt like concrete blocks, when loading up in our coolers.

Shell Island party time! 2-stroke blended margaritas are great. Desert Bull gave me my first one at Cielito Lindo in 2001!

Anyone heading to Shell Island to camp.

Winds from offshore and onshore can be bad. You will need to adept to changing wind conditions. 5 day trip in 2006 it blew the entire trip, except for the day of our departure.

Be prepare to deal with stingrays, boil hot water and container for foot. Our paddle boarders saw them everywhere. We have been lucky, only once by adult walking at low tide.

We also had some issues with honey bees seeking fresh water. Some of us got stung multiple time.

Our group can't seem to stay away. This is a special place and hope it can stay this way.
Until 2020 audios!

Wind is a funny thing... and can wreck your camp. My kids and I were 'blown off' the island in 2002 when a super strong wind suddenly hit in the middle of the night. We took down our tents and sun canopy and left and that was after two beautiful days and nights there.

The next big bad wind was on 4th of July weekend, 2011. A perfect start of the vacation on the island and just as it was getting dark and our campfire was going, the wind hit suddenly. It was the worst, hurricane strong. It destroyed the sun canopy, and before I could cover the fire, embers from it burned our daughter's sleeping bag. She ended up sleeping in my truck and Elizabeth and I hunkered down in our tent that was ripped with sand blowing into it.

So beautiful and calm the day before the wind it:

As it turned out, this was the wind that sank the fishing boat (was the Erik) near Gonzaga Bay.
