Beautiful spot and great fishery. Not the best spot for a kayak fisherman. Because it is located on the most narrow choke point on the SOC, the tidal currents are brutal. A strong paddler will have trouble making headway against the tide. Every little point has an associated eddy or whirlpool. Always plan our fishing sessions so the tide will take you back to where you want to go. I always camp at the base of the runway when I go there.

fishbuck - 6-26-2019 at 07:46 AM

Thankyou. I was wondering based on the map.

fishbuck - 6-26-2019 at 07:47 AM

I actually prefer an inflatable but haven't gotten it together yet.

fishbuck - 6-26-2019 at 07:59 AM

This trip could turn inTo spliting a panga in BOLA. If anyone wants to do that I will save San Francisquito for another day.
But otherwise we sail (fish) on the tide. Maybe 2-3 hour window focused on hightide. Or low.

Bajazly - 6-26-2019 at 08:17 AM

Cuando es esto? Now you're getting into the side of the peninsula I know pretty well.

My "Holy Grail" on this is that I have read that yellowtail can be caught from the beach there.
Has anyone on Baja Nomad actually done that?

fishbuck - 6-26-2019 at 08:22 AM

I'm shooting for right after 4th of July.

Bajazly - 6-26-2019 at 08:24 AM

We caught a very small one once out of the inflatable but not from the beach. Halibut, corvina, sardinera in the rocks are pretty common.

That might could work. Like the weekend or into the next week?

Scale Maps:

fishbuck - 6-26-2019 at 10:32 AM

I'm thinking El Arco route...
And hardway to BOLA if I don't have a fish yet...

I'd be coming from Bahia and that would be better for you too. Less off road total and the road from Bahia down and back is in fine shape, I was out there a couple weeks ago.

fishbuck - 6-26-2019 at 11:23 AM

Maybe

AKgringo - 6-26-2019 at 11:47 AM

You might want to consider Las Animas camp (top map posted by DK). I have not fished there, but I enjoyed the challenging road and excellent scenery when I drove in there a couple of years ago.

It should be good for your kayak. Even if the wind is blowing, there are some mangrove lagoons that might be fun. The "hard way" to B.O.L.A. is my route of choice, love that road!

fishbuck - 6-26-2019 at 12:03 PM

Since my goal here is a yellowtail I might just fish a panga from BOLA.
It doesn't sound promising from the kayak.

Bajazly - 6-26-2019 at 12:06 PM

I've been to Las Animas a couple times and it is pretty cool there but never caught fish except for one halibut.

What is this "Hard way" route you speak of?

fishbuck - 6-26-2019 at 01:06 PM

The not El Arco way. I always heard El Arco was the easiest way.

I was quoting fishbuck (out of context), that was his description of reaching San Francisquito driving south from B.O.L.A., not mine.

L.A. Bay south is an easy way, and much much shorter drive. There is one grade south of San Rafael to climb. It was rough but no biggie in 2017. Reports the past year say the road graders had made it very nice. So, until the next hurricane, it is easy. The El Arco road is excellent all the way when I drove it in June 2017. Some of the fastest graded roads in Baja.

Here is my map that shows Bahía de las Animas followed by maps thjatb show the rest of the drive to Punta San Francisquito and the El Arco road from Guerrero Negro:

If your goal is yellowtail, you can fish that in sq and skip the hellashious heat of july in sq

Kayak fishing is more fun than fishing from panga, suggest you just kayak fish and be happy with just farting around on a kayak and whatever you happen to catch.

Probably better kayaking weather in sq (bola gets a bit windy)

fishbuck - 6-26-2019 at 04:26 PM

I still want to go out there. I have be to Las Animas by boat and fished it some. There are a few Pinecles. But a good way off the beach.
I remember a big rocky point. A reef.
I know I can get to these fish on my own eventually.
But this time I need local knowledge and a boat.
I would love to fish the big island front side. But that takes the bigger pangas.
The 31are the best but cost the most.
Maybe we can kayak Las Animas after I get my yellow tail.
Camp 1 night or something there.
Save San Francisquitos for another trip. Down Raptor Road (Los Arcos).
I got to have a decent inflatable for that I think.
The big panga can fish 4 easy. So maybe that's the magic number.
These boats get booked up so it takes planning...
Let's go catch some yellowtail and cook them on the beach at Las Animas.
You make civeche.
I'll make the tacos.
Or all the sushimi you can eat...

David K - 6-26-2019 at 04:39 PM

Mike, hook up with one of the Nomads at Camp Gecko, perhaps?
They go out for yellowtail pretty regularly in the summer.
Camp Gecko is about 4 miles south of town but make the arrangements before going. It is a private residential compound now and until you do something with your hair, you may scare the hell out of anyone not expecting you!

If all else fails... Mia just posted this fishing guide link on her L.A. Bay Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/cangrejosoficial/

fishbuck - 6-26-2019 at 05:03 PM

Copy. I can probably go to town and fill someones boat. Or maybe hit the 3 -4 cantinas and make friends.

I try not to us my Anahiem face;)

I usually don't fish San Quintin until Aug. 1 or later.
But the bluefin had swam thru theee so it was worth a try and I got my 1 bottom fishing trip of the year out of the way.
I'm waiting for the magic kelp patties about 10 miles out on a hot August day.
BOLA is where it's at for yellows right now.

Bajazly - 6-26-2019 at 07:41 PM

You put a date on a calendar yet Fishy? I'm coming from Oakland and need to plan a little to get there. The So Calers are probably gonna swarm Bahia around the 4th so a boat may be difficult.

If fishy visits camp gecko, off his meds as he appears to be, he will fit right in,... haircut will not be alarming to that crowd,... camp gecko is kind of a land of misfits and drunks (and unstylish hair) (stay classy!), relatively speaking, eh?

:?: what the hells wrong with you?

fishbuck - 6-26-2019 at 11:35 PM

Don't worry Don, please.
I know Baja and the kind of people I will find there.

And thank you for your concern Dr. Goat.
I always get what I need and some of what I want...

But yeah, I'm still hustling my fishing trip. Maybe something going on Bloody Decks...

You can ride with me and share gas or I will meet you there. Or we can caravan if you don't drive too fast. I save gas if I can.
Bring heavy gear!

fishbuck - 6-26-2019 at 11:43 PM

But the hair goes with me. I'm going all Viking and stuff...
I am aka the Baron Von Buckau!
That's like "King of the Norte"

Beware of the Hun in the Sun!;)

You name it. I'll be there!
July 10th has been mentioned.
Anybody got a phone number for a July 10 yellowtail? I'd like to make a reservation for 2... +

Bajazly - 6-27-2019 at 09:09 AM

The 10thish could be ok. I know a diver in Bahia, let me email him and see if he's around.

fishbuck - 6-27-2019 at 09:35 AM

I flexible on the day.

fishbuck - 6-28-2019 at 01:31 AM

Yellowtail are in San Quintin. And all the way to Santa Catalina Island.
So maybe no need to drive across...

fishbuck - 6-28-2019 at 01:37 AM

And this...

[Edited on 6-28-2019 by fishbuck]

Hook - 6-28-2019 at 06:08 PM

This poll, like you, is all over the map.

fishbuck - 6-28-2019 at 07:42 PM

Yep.
Wide open surface yellowtail in San Quintin. And two absolute whale WSBs...
I'm late for BOLA and the Pacific is early this year.
So I might not get across...

[Edited on 6-29-2019 by fishbuck]

wessongroup - 6-28-2019 at 08:27 PM

Looks like fun ... got one (1), albeit a somewhat weak swimmer at this time :):)

fishbuck - 6-28-2019 at 08:44 PM

So seriously.

I will be at my camp for the 4th. San Quintin.
If this yellowtail/White Seabass bute continues I will fish there.
If you want to split a boat you can stay at my house.
2-3 people. Each must fish and pay boat split.
Cash money.
I fish with K&M.
The panga is about $400.
It will fish 4 but 3 better.

I'm open in the dates.
I will do a 2way split in the boat...
Still cheaper than BOLA.
And it's the pacific baby...

fishbuck - 6-28-2019 at 08:55 PM

And you can use my kayak in the bay if you want.
I have a few.

fishbuck - 6-28-2019 at 09:50 PM

If you fly-in... I will buy you a big m/f beer at Jardines. And ofcourse pilots are welcome at my camp.
I thinking about keeping a "pilot car" for my fellow Baja Nomad Pilots...
There was one there for me on my 1st landing... I fly in and drove my buddies to town. Another pilot joined us from Cielito Lindo. He flew over to my runway.
It was cool!

David K - 6-29-2019 at 08:46 AM

Have fun Mike!
How may Nomad private pilots are there anymore?
Capt. Mike doesn't post here much anymore. He was the big one. Just see him on Facebook now.
Floatflyer, LancairDriver, steekers, bonanza bucko... ??

Fun site about flying to Baja in the good old days: http://bannerbob.net/flying_trips_into_mexico.htm
