ID please

I found this on the beach at Nopolo last evening, along with another segment perhaps twelve long total. Appears to be a marine egg case of some kind? The crescent shaped side was about 1.75” flattish individual segments were connected with a short segment of same membranous material. Kinda like a spinal cord in total appearance.
Google has ruled out shark, ray, octopus, and I’ve tried to work through fishes, but that’s a big topic and it’s a big big thing for a fish. Nope, not a jelly fish.
Anyone have an ID for me?

It's a Whelk egg sac, aka mermaid's necklace. DK had a resurrected post with a similar picture recently.

Here is the trip report with the whelk egg photo. I too asked for help to ID it and Nomads came through! http://forums.bajanomad.com/viewthread.php?tid=39826

Migrating snails? That must be quite a spectacle to behold!
