Changes

Have you noticed anything that's changed for the better since you first visited Baja California?

Here's mine: The basura cans along the highway. (A sign things are picking up?)

Improved beer bottles.............

Tucker - 3-19-2005 at 08:20 PM

Ten years ago it was an adventure opening a beer bottle, probably one in fifty chipped at the neck inviting you to swallow the chip. Now very seldom does one chip, although I check every one.

The availablity of potable ice.

Paulina - 3-19-2005 at 10:31 PM

One summer in Bahia, August 1982, the ice house was out. The town generator was also out of service. The two markets in town at that time, Casa Diaz and Dos Pinos didn't sell ice.

Every day we cooled the cerveza by towing it behind the boat in burlap bags. No ice for fish at the end of the day.

Finally the generator was repaired, the electricity came on again for a limited time daily. The Marine station that we were staying at had an electric soda machine with two dispensers. On one side we could fit two beer bottles, up the other side we shoved dorado filets. Margaritas were warm, straight out of the bottles.

Ice is a good thing, but come to think of it, so were those times...

No more Bimbos

bajajudy - 3-19-2005 at 10:31 PM

I dont have to eat white bimbo bread anymore. I remember when they came out with "whole wheat" bimbo(back in the mid 80's)....I was thrilled until I took one bite and found out that it was just white bimbo with brown food coloring.

Speaking of brown Bimbo...

vgabndo - 3-19-2005 at 11:53 PM

A couple of years ago we returned home and pulled the cab-over off the truck and stuck it out back. About six months later I was looking for somthing inside and found half a loaf of Bimbo. It looked exactly like it did the last time I had opened the bag. Having eaten several slices, I don't expect there'll be any need of embalming when I croak.

surfer jim - 3-20-2005 at 12:35 AM

...vgabndo....I just spit out my coke and rum when I read the last sentence....good...that was very good....

Skeet/Loreto - 3-20-2005 at 08:52 AM

The changes in the people after the road Opened, TV and Telephones came to Baja Sur.

everytime i cross the border my mood improves dramatically:cool:

I'm not exactly sure what this means...

Mexray - 3-20-2005 at 12:07 PM

But when the new Wal-Mart Super Center opened in Stockton a few months ago, they began selling Bimbo Bread!

It's the only place I've seen it up here...guess I'll take a look at the label to see just where it's baked...just curious, is all.

Bimbo Bread

Natalie Ann - 3-20-2005 at 01:02 PM

Bimbo Bread - My corner tienda carries an ample supply! There's also this little trick they do with the bread when it finally goes stales (after 4 or 5 years).... toast it crisp, then package it in little packets of 10 slices and resell it. I often see moms giving broken pieces of this toast to their children as teething biscuits.

Natalie Ann - 3-20-2005 at 01:04 PM

And to stay on topic - what's changed for the better since I began visiting Baja is me! I'm more relaxed, happier and healthier - long as I keep visiting again and again and again.;)

Bruce R Leech - 3-20-2005 at 01:29 PM

now you can have Bimbo multi grain bread it has more color. or even double fiber. it has ground cardboard added:lol:

bajalou - 3-20-2005 at 02:06 PM

After the free trade agreemtent, Bimbo started buying bakery companies in the US. Look for more of it

bajajudy - 3-20-2005 at 02:13 PM

Bimbo owns Enteman(sp?). The people that do all the coffee cakes, etc.
I have an old saltine tin that I always put the loaf of Bimbo(with cardboard of course) in when we go camping so it wont get crushed. Vgbndo,I had the same experience with a loaf month or 2 old . looked just like the day I bought it.
Does anyone know where the name Bimbo came from?

Dave - 3-20-2005 at 02:25 PM

Bimbo bread is owned by Continental bakery. The same people who bring you Wonder bread. Same chit.

BIMBO BREAD HEAD or Clever Crazy Lady?

RandyMacSC/SO - 3-20-2005 at 04:40 PM

Note! This funny little moral story below was sent to me by a very good friend from California. I decided to post it here, and I hope I haven't done so already, cause if I have already posted such in the past, I am a the product of eating too much BIMBO bread when I was in the Baja, so that's my Story and I am STICKING with it.

===============================
On to the funny little joke sent to me from my good friend Sammy I Am.

Bimbo or Clever Crazy Lady?
===================

A Married couple is driving along a highway doing a steady forty miles per hour.

The wife is behind the?wheel.

Her husband suddenly looks Across at her and speaks in a clear voice,

"I know we've been married for twenty years, but I want a divorce."

The wife says nothing, keeps looking at the?road ahead but?slowly increases her speed to 45 mph.

The?husband speaks?again. "I don't want you to try and talk me out of it," he says,?"because I've been having an affair with your?best friend, and?she's a far better lover than you are."

Again the wife stays quiet, but grips the?steering wheel more?tightly and slowly increases the speed to 55.

He pushes his?luck. "I want the house," he says insistently.

Up?to 60. "I want?the car, too," he continues. 65 mph.??"And," he says, "I'll have the bank accounts, all?the credit cards?and the boat!"

The car slowly starts veering towards a?massive concrete?bridge. This makes him nervous, so he asks?her: "Isn't there?anything you want?"

The wife at last replies-in a quiet and controlled?voice. "No, I've?got everything I need," she says.

"Oh, really," he inquires, "So what have you?got?"

Just before they slam into the wall at 65 mph, the wife turns to him and smiles. "The airbag."

Moral of the Story:
-------------------------
Women are clever b-tches.?Don't mess with?them.

I think Presidente brandy has gotten better.

Packoderm - 3-20-2005 at 06:15 PM

Every good thing seems to come at a cost. We now have internet service and satellite radio down south, but now it doesn't seem quite so removed from my home here. Also, the internet has allowed online reservations which has pushed some room rates through the roof. Think about Guad canyon and their increased rates; would that be possible without the net? The roads are better, but you know what comes with that. Even once small towns now have stores stocked with a wide array of goods that can be paid via credit card. I liked the small general store in BdLA before. So, I have to say, in regards to my individual needs, there has been no real positive change in Baja that I can think of since I visited it the first time.

FrankO - 3-20-2005 at 09:11 PM

Biggest change I've seen are the incorporations of small towns into cities and the HUGE columns of organized motorhomes that just can't figure out how or desire to let you pass. That and the price of a bottle of beer or tequila.

Don Jorge - 3-20-2005 at 09:40 PM

Yep. The switch from taped music to disc! No more miles and miles of tape strung out and in the bushes. Also, the recycling of aluminum. Now I can Hayduke my empties and rationalize a benefit.

bajalera - 3-21-2005 at 10:06 AM

Man, those Bimbo posts took me back to old times. In the 1960s Mexican friends used to say, as if it were an important achievement, "This is just like YOUR bread!" And indeed it was just like Wonderbread, but I never bought that at home.

The name Bimbo was taken from Bambi which came out about the same time the company was founded - I guess they changed a letter and the look of the fuzzy little animal so they wouldn't have to pay royalties. Maybe it's supposed to be a cousin or something - I don't know.

Bimbo was rumored to be looking to acquire Interstate a few years ago but it didn't go down.

I think the best changes in Baja are the arrivals of Domino's and the american auto parts shops (oh - and Walmart and Costco too).

Eli - 3-21-2005 at 12:00 PM

Well, the bathrooms are a lot cleaner and better equiped. I sure do like that.

changes

comitan - 3-21-2005 at 12:31 PM

Unspoiled adventure land is gone unless you are 4wheelin, just be happy we have what we have, and not have to go north for a big mac. Anyway its not our country no matter how long we have been here we are all still gringo's to the mexicans(yes JR) all of us. The mexicans appreciate having access to all the good things we take for granted.

bajajudy - 3-21-2005 at 03:19 PM
