Hey David. Can you tell me where I can get this map

Thanks

What determines who uses the sportsman short cuts? Different class of vehicles, or different class of competitors?

David K - 9-29-2019 at 06:23 PM

Sportsman classes are separate classes, lower entry fee. A way to get into off-road racing without being a millionaire.

Thanks StuckSucks for the nice embiggened map😄

embiggened, now that is an interesting word. Learn something everyday.

Is a guaranteed Baja state of mind experience; the trip to get there, the speed spectacle and all the different type race teams going 10/10.

Great spot to view. Sad Jose is no longer selling beer at his shack. Heard he went to live with family in Mexicali.

I am bummed of the few times I drove on Diablo Dry Lake, I never saw or visited this little business... Do we know when he was operating there? 2006 and 2004 were the last two times for me, I think?

DawnPatrol - 10-4-2019 at 12:29 PM

My friend, Cliff lives right next to the San Quintin Wash at Hwy 1 and they will pass by him.
Any guess as to the times the various riders will go by (I know the Cycles and Opens are the fastest)?

Thinking about going down to observe
Alan

His house is right before the 200 mark on the map

[Edited on 10-4-2019 by DawnPatrol]

David K - 10-4-2019 at 05:27 PM

The fastest will be there around 4 hours from when they start, some sooner. So 7 am for most of the fastest bikes and 2:30 pm for the first of the fastest trophy trucks. A lot of things could change this guess... but 50 mph average for the fastest vehicles is usually spot on... but be in place 30 minutes before that.

Bajazly - 10-23-2019 at 02:48 PM

The change is probably due to the legal action being taken with the Compadre Trail from Tecate to Ojos Negros. Last I heard they wanted $3000 US per group to access it and this event having the deep pockets of Score attached, can't imagine they didn't want the whole bank but now they get nothing. Maybe the people involved should think about firing the attorney who they have representing them.

bajatrailrider - 10-23-2019 at 08:24 PM

Many of the ranchos now wanting 3 grand large groups to pass. Are being underscored by ranchos next door letting people pass for few bucks. Real mess they are going again backwards pass san Vicente routes. That's is 6 races here in 3 months.

Is that excessive? When some routes are closed, does that mean cutting new routes through the desert? Or, are the areas open to racing just getting smaller? Or, are the ranchos just getting over run with motor vehicle activity, racing and recreational? Maybe just going the way of California, but about 50 years later?

For years there was only one race a year in back of town San Vicente 200. This year all races not allowed to run road near beach. So last 6 races all pass within 10 min back of S.V . Using every dirt road they can find . As far as new Gates in other places Ranchos have got a lawyer to allow they to block routes Charge fees. There plan not working as next-door rancho couple bucks green light to pass. Why is this? 1 large tour groups out of control 60+ riders. 2 word of mouth to me direct from owners. Most Mexican riders not respectful of riding past ranchos. Speeding racing not respecting slow down. I go to all the trouble to get to know rancho owners. Even help them with there work. Only take few close friends on there ranchos after owners . Give me green light and keys to there ranchos. Even my close Mexican Amigo riders do not share the respect I have to get this permission so sad I will not share with them. My thing is riding abandoned routes closed routes no routes. Not on any map or GPS as that is what gets routes closed. Lucky I still have endless routes happy there are locked gates. As far as Score destroying roads with there races. It is a no count if anybody has been off road in San Vicente beach side. The big mining company has torn down so many Montanas. They have changed the sky line. There mining roads endless tal powder. Sadly 80% they find nothing and move to next Montana range.

John Harper - 10-24-2019 at 05:43 PM

Thank you, Larry! I know you see a lot more of what's happening than the rest of us. I'm headed back to Mike's this spring to do a good recon on the creek, since it looks like this race is going to actually go up to RLT and around. I just hope it all goes well and everyone respects the wonders of Baja.

One thing unknown is the motor 4 cyl or 6 cyl turbo?

Where is that? We're heading south for a few days of catching after the race.

El Alamo was a huge gold mine and today a ghost town. If you know where Independencia is on Hwy. 3, just a bit north then take the graded road west a few miles. See photos in my Trip #8 report from 2018.

Did you see Trip #8?
Link: http://forums.bajanomad.com/viewthread.php?tid=91029

In the report:

Red arrow is El Alamo and blue arrow is Mission Santa Catalina. Independencia is between the two.

My first side trip was to check out El Alamo, a one-time huge gold mine town. The road is unsigned and the kilometer marker before it is only facing the other lane and hidden by a shrub! It is Km 85 and the graded road to the west for El Alamo is at Km. 85.5.

The road is pretty easy to drive with just one huge puddle to cross. it is 9.5 miles to 'town' and it was pretty deserted! A real ghost town indeed. I could not get near the mine structures because of closed gates.

I will post some photos to this point ...

El Alamo road

OK, so that is about it for El Alamo...
Next stop, the final Spanish mission in Baja California, Santa Catalina 1797-1839.

lots of rain last night in Northern Baja. Laguna Salada could be interesting

Change is start route

bajaguy - 11-20-2019 at 04:57 PM

**** last minute news ****

For the recorded rains of Tuesday and Wednesday night, the route of the Baja 1000 2019 suffered a drastic change.

Director of municipal transit, noted that it will not pass through the Ensenada Creek. The start of the competition was changed, they will come out of Avenue Riveroll until they reach Amber Street, they will bend along the same Amber Street and will turn around the corner of the seven eleven on Ruiz Street, to follow the normal route.

Take your precautions because they pass for the first time in the streets of the center area, especially to merchants and the untraseuntes.
These locals will suffer from dissatisfaction, since for two days there will be economic losses through closed streets.

This Baja 1000 2019 will have as a goal in the port, since the streets will open until Sunday in the morning.

Be more on the slope these days on social networks, share this post.

Races:
Friday November 22th.

Departure:
Bikes 3:00 am.
Cars: 10:30 am.

ZipLine - 11-20-2019 at 05:51 PM

So... they will in fact depart from the usual location but head off to the north to Riverol then head east to (I think they mean) AMBAR street.

Would that be accurate?

PaulW - 11-21-2019 at 07:09 AM

Drove to Ensenada and back on Wednesday.
Rain was heavy from west of Valley Trinidad to west of Ojos. The muddy roads in the city were noted caused by overflow ditches. The Highway was ok except for minor rock falls.

mtgoat666 - 11-21-2019 at 08:08 AM

silly that these offroad race vehicles cant race when there is a little water :P

responsible drivers would follow the ethical practice of not running the roads when saturated, as saturated unpaved road beds are ruined by wheeled traffic.
Is race promoter going to blade and recompact the road beds after the racers tear up the muddy roads? No, they never have and never will.

Responsible racers/promoters would delay the race and run it only after roads have drained and are not saturated.

I saw it mentioned on the other thread, the Baja 1000 start is delayed for 24 hours due to wet conditions and to repair washed out areas of the course. As mentioned, racers do chew up the dirt roads they use, but Nature is far more destructive and actually destroys roads in Baja!

From www.score-international.com

Weather forces 24-hour delay to the start
of BFGoodrich Tires 52nd SCORE Baja 1000

Three days of rain makes significant portion of 800.5 rugged race course impassable;
Motorcycles/quads start at 3 a.m. (PT) on Saturday, cars/trucks/utvs at 10:30 a.m.(PT) Saturday

SCORE Live Streaming– Start Line, Finish Line, with announcers Rat Sult, Karlina Hirales
AND live Vehicle Tracking throughout the race at www.score-international.com

ENSENADA, Mexico—For just the third time in the storied history of the Granddaddy of all Desert Races, SCORE race officials have been forced to delay the start of the BFGoodrich Tires 52nd SCORE Baja 1000, presented by 4 Wheel Parts by 24-hours to Saturday morning in Ensenada, Baja California, Mexico because of inclement weather.

SCORE COMMENTS
“Ensenada and the surrounding areas of the Northern part of the Baja California peninsula have been inundated with more than four inches of rainfall over the last three days which has forced us, in the interest of safety, to delay the start of the race by 24 hours,” stated Jose A. Grijalva, SCORE President and race director. “With the storm having passed through, we want to give our racers the opportunity to pre-run on Friday to make their final preparations for the race.
“The course is rugged enough without all of the rain this week making several parts impassable because of flooding and standing water. We have numerous crews out on the course identifying the worst sections that we will bypass or repair as best we can. This will be one of the most challenging races in the history of the world’s greatest desert race.”

Mt Diablo:

Race postponed 24 hours

bajaguy - 11-21-2019 at 08:10 PM

Hello again!

For only the 3rd time in its legendary 52 year history, the start of the SCORE Baja 1000 will be delayed by 24 hours until 3 am on Saturday morning when the first of the motorcycles will roar into history.

Over the past several days, the first major storm of the rainy reason pummelled Baja California with up to 4 inches of rain. As of noon today when the cold front finally moved on, there were still sections of Ensenada underwater. Besides the race start delay, the drivers meeting that was slated for 7 pm tonight will also be moved to 7 pm on Friday night.

By delaying the race for 24 hours, that will not only give the sun some time to work its magic, but drivers can prerun parts of the course and see what challenges the rains have left for them to face during the real race. This will also give SCORE officials the opportunity to repair certain sections of the course or resort to alternative routes in order to avoid the most hazardous parts entirely.
Over the past several days, I have admired the accuracy of Accuweather's Minutecast.

As I needed to be out and about when it wasn't raining iguanas and Gila monsters, I appreciated not getting drenched during the middle of my activities. In fact, the forecasts were so good that my Chihuahua Galan Siki Cota managed to stay dry each and every time that he accompanied me.

While I could be wrong, I sensed that SCORE's announcement generated a huge sigh of relief across Ensenada from the racers looking to finish high in their class to the pit crews keeping the vehicles rolling to the officials that are tasked with protecting the racers, pit crews and also the spectators. Whether or not people agree with me on this one, at least everyone was happy when the sun finally showed its face, in all its glory, this afternoon!

Until next time!
Anthony Cota

New raptor didn't fare well either. My homeboy Robbie Gordon finished. After next heavy rain, all traces of race should be gone

I got a text from Curt LeDuc who was the final driver of the Bronco. Ford Corporate instructed him to leave the race at Mile 580 and drive it back to Ensenada for photos rather than keep their factory mechanics on duty any longer. They had gone 2 days without sleep.

Very true with Ford's David mechanics from Ford factory never get any sleep .That is great excuse only Ford could come up with.:light:

The real issue is Ford was not prepared to race a baja 1000. Not enough spares not enough mechanics not enough chase vehicles.
A half baked concept at best.

Compare that with the re3al Bronco racer. Moss brothers have it all figured out with way more track side help that is ever necessary. A moss chased truck even provide trans fluid to the new bronco because the Ford mechanics did not have any. Every chase truck used by Moss' has a qualified mechanic and all kinds of spare parts.
