Summer 2019-Post San Juanico Trip Part 2 (San Juanico to Cerritos)

Sunday Day 11 (continued)

We got on the road to leave town about noon. The road south out of San Juanico was pretty amazing for a majority of the drive. Once we got an hour or so out of San Juanico, the road turned pretty horrible. It was better to drive on the dirt on the side of the road, than on the road itself.



Part of this trip was to just explore places in Baja that we’ve not been. On the way south, we turned west at Ciudad Insurgentes and headed to Adolfo López Mateos. The road to get out to this town was half missing; construction had removed miles-long stretches of pavement. We got to town and drove around a bit. We didn’t find anything up much interest here, so we turned around and headed back out to the 1. We found a drunk guy named Pablo who had driven halfway off the dirt road, over a berm in an extremely dumpy 4-door toyota sedan. I grabbed a tow rope and hooked it to the trailer, and pulled him back onto the road. He was extremely thankful, and we continued on our way.



We grabbed a quick bite to eat in Ciudad Insurgents (a fast food chicken place of some sorts), and got back on the road. Once we got to Ciudad Constitución, we turned off on highway 22, and went down to San Carlos. As we have the dogs with us, our lodging options are somewhat limited. One of the first places coming into town is the Villas Mar y Arena (Carretera Federal, Cd Constitucion - Puerto San Carlos Kilómetro 57, 23740 Puerto San Carlos, B.C.S., Mexico - 24.796521, -112.115295). Dog friendly and they had vacancy. We watched the sunset over Magdalena Bay.





Monday - Day 12

Breakfast at Villas Mar y Arena was very good. We drove around town and explored the town a bit. We continued south and got to Todos Santos. As we were towing the trailer, our options for lodging in town were limited. I called a couple places and asked about parking with the trailer. The typical response contained a lot of “hmm”, and “no sé”. I pulled over at the Pemex and checked out some lodging options outside of town. We proceeded south to Cerritos. First place we checked with the “Cerritos Surf Town Beach Hotel”. It felt like a grungy, Cabo-style resort. There was no real signage to direct you to any sort of office or help. Finally after wandering around, I found what appeared to be one of the rooms that was converted into the office. They didn’t have any availability for two nights, so we went to the next option. We found the Cerritos Beach Inn (Playa de Suenos, KM 68 Hwy 19, 23301 Pescadero, B.C.S., Mexico - 23.318945, -110.167948), which was really nice. This is a 12-bedroom house that was converted to an inn. The owner lives there and made us feel very much at home. The kids were excited because there was a pool with a slide.






Tuesday - Day 13

We drove back into Todos Santos to find a lavandería. We found one right next to the Pemex (23.446178, -110.226215 - Can’t remember the name). The extremely friendly gentleman working there told us it would be a couple of hours for our 4 loads of laundry. We had breakfast at Las Fuentes (Looks to now be permanently closed), right across from the town park. Food and service was mediocre. Nothing spectacular. After breakfast, the girls played at the park for a while. They met some other kids their age. Two of these kids, Arias and Ellia, were from Canada, and had lived in Todos Santos for a few years. It was interesting to talk to their mother about their experiences of relocating to Baja. After the kids were done playing, we went back to the hotel to let the girls swim at the pool.





Wednesday - Day 14

The girls we met at the park, Arias and ellia came to play at the pool with our girls. While they were playing, I went and spoke to the owner and a couple of the locals about opportunities to off-road around Cerritos. They guided me to a wash a few miles south of town. We went back into the wash and explored. There was some really cool scenery and some super skinny cows grazing around, and then we came to a tall rock face with a waterfall running down it. The girls and I hiked up and checked things out. It was a very neat sight to see. After exploring that a bit, we obviously couldn’t go any further, so we turned around and wanted to see what else we could find. We took a fork off to the right and and a good graded road. Things started to look a bit familiar, and I realized that, once again, we were on the NORRA race course near Refugio. We stayed on this course for a few miles and then headed back towards the general direction we had come from. Soon, we made our way down to the beach, and headed back north to the Cerritos Beach Inn. A great couple hours of exploring!












We cleaned up and headed up into town for dinner. We found Gallo Azul (Ignacio Zaragoza, Colegio Militar y Rangel, Centro, 23300 Todos Santos, B.C.S., Mexico - 23.446942, -110.225157). The service and food was fantastic. Great pizza. There was a small play area outside for the kids, and they let us have the dogs on the back patio with us. We walked up the street to La Paloma (Heroico Colegio Militar 108, Centro, 23880 Centro, B.C.S., Mexico - 23.449720, -110.223061) and got ice cream.
