I would like to report that she is still there selling her tamales and burritos. No longer under the tree since it was cut down a few years ago but
on the south side of the new pemex and still in her green van. I stoped in last tuesday and had lunch there. fishin richBob H - 3-22-2005 at 08:58 AM
There are a lot more stickers on that van now also.... here ya go.

A guy was selling Carmelita's tamales out of a blue van last week. He had hot coffee as well. There is also another yellow van there selling tortas
and other things. They had a couple tables set up too!! I recommend Carmelita's beef tamales!eetdrt88 - 3-22-2005 at 09:53 AM

The last time I stopped at the tamale lady(guy) I was with my wife she had not had one so we stopped I ordered 1 apiece because we were going to eat
later, so down the road we have our tamale, then my wife says to me don't you EVER order just one.Pinche Gringo - 3-22-2005 at 01:41 PM

Carmelita's son "Mr. Joe" was working the van when I stopped on the 11th.

I'm sorry to report than her daughter Ramona lost her battle with substance abuse a few months ago. She was the second child of Carmelita's to precede
her to the great beyond. We liked Ramona, and when we last talked, she seemed to be doing better. She was "washing" customer's cars for tips. Alcohol
is a drug, and it does kill. Too bad. No olives in my last four tamales though, I was disappointed.Bob H - 3-22-2005 at 03:03 PM

there is no better place to swoop in and grab a snack. as soon as you leave EL ROSARIO, seems the next loncheria is this- the next fast-feed GRINDS.
mi hijo won't lemme pass "JESUS" w/out stocking up on some "tamales para llevar"

inside joke
fishinrich - 3-23-2005 at 04:29 PM
Bob--It's kind of an inside joke between dave and I. There is someone out there who removes the viva baja stickers when ever they encounter them.
The tamale wagon being the #1 spot hit. I am always putting new stickers on it and by now it's turning into a joke. fishin richpappy - 3-23-2005 at 07:57 PM
whenever i pass through(andusually gas up there) i always get a few from here-darn good!!lindsay - 3-23-2005 at 10:55 PM
I remember my first tamale stop there as we climbed the hill and then hit the lonely Pemex. I was in a caravan from the SD Natural History Museum on
our way to Mulege where a binational team was doing renovations in the town's museum and organizing educational programs with the local high school.
So, as the newbie on her first lengthy Baja roadtrip, I had no clue what culinary wonders came from that van parked under a solo tree. As you all have
shared, Carmelita offers a delicious Baja bounty of treats whether you enjoy the tamales or as Pompano notes the burritos. For my 4 year old
daughter's developing palate, she cheerfully offered to make little bean and cheese burritos. Sharing the feelings of motherhood with Carmelita was a
very warm and genuine experience as well so I was saddened to hear about her children.
So, it was nice to be reminded of her snack oasis. I wonder how many of the "not in the know" crowd have sped past her van or just gassed up and sized
up that van as suspect on quality.....oh what a horrible newbie faux-pas....glad I was with a group "in the know" on my first Carmelita
encounter...important Baja road lesson, looks can be deceiving and never judge a book by its cover or a van by its paint job. Now all this Carmelita
talk makes me regret that getting to Mulege in April via the Loreto AeroMex flight and not road tripping it!!
Big Mistake
BajaDanD - 3-24-2005 at 12:18 AM
we stopped there on our way back from Seeing the Whales Bought 4,two each worst mistake I ever maid.
I will never ever stop there again and buy only 2 each what was I thinking. I should have turned back after eating them and bought a dozen WOW!!!!
they were good.
I'm going to skip right by the tamale conversation, because frankly you guy are making me wayyyyyy
Debra - 3-24-2005 at 01:59 AM
So I'll go right to the "sticker" conversation (well I might, but I won't)
Thank you Bajarunner for the very nice card you sent to me for sending you one of "those stickers" show it proudly!!!!!!David K - 3-24-2005 at 08:33 AM
Viva Baja was the first sticker I made... 'got baja?' the current one.
I just am not having much luck in getting the second printing from Antonio (who made them in Tijuana), what with the new baby and all.
I have everyone's request, and the envelopes are addressed... as soon as I get them, they will get sent out!
