Sea of Cortez in a Windrider 17

Mulege Canuck - 12-4-2019 at 02:00 PM

Just finished a two week trip in my Windrider17 trimaran. Had some great sailing but we ran into a tropical storm that resulted in some serious rain and lightning. Even with that we had a blast.

I would like to thank Nomad “Howard” for helping us out in Loreto. I owe you Howard. Next time your on Vancouver Island, look me up.

Super cool, looks like a fun trip.

JZ - 12-4-2019 at 02:38 PM

That's quite the adventure. Pretty ballsy.

BornFisher - 12-4-2019 at 03:51 PM

Great trip. Thanks for the video, scenery was awesome!

“One man’s ballsy is another man’s fook all”

We had that boat in 25 knots with Pacifico in hand. No worries.

Looks like great fun!

Thanks for sharing the nice video.

What a great trip, thanks for sharing.

Is the windrider light enough for 2 people to haul it up on the beach at night?
Or do you anchor it overnight?
Plastic or fiberglass hull?

bajapedro - 12-5-2019 at 06:43 AM

Awesome trip. You have the huevos of an elephant my friend!

It is a roto-mold plastic boat. When we land on the beach, we unload all the gear first then pull it up on the beach. I roll it on four 2” PVC pipe sections. They act as skids or rollers depending on how hard the beach is. Two men can pull it up no problems but it is difficult for my wife and I to do. I will get a winch setup for next year with some sort of deadman anchor. My wife will be a lot happier then.

JZ - 12-5-2019 at 10:03 AM

This is some pretty impressive adventuring.

Paco Facullo - 12-5-2019 at 10:27 AM

That was GREAT !

You've got mad video skills ..

And the Mexicali blues was a most excellent surprise ..........

Marc - 12-9-2019 at 03:40 PM

Wonderful experience. Great video. Familiar to me scenery. Wish I was there now.

Mulege Canuck - 12-9-2019 at 03:47 PM

Glad you enjoyed the video. I can’t take credit for it. My buddy Chris is the expert. My videos are not as refined with numerous F-bombs. Definitely not suitable for the distinguished Nomads 😎

David K - 12-9-2019 at 03:56 PM

Pretty good music... James Taylor's Mexico is a classic driving song for many of us Baja Nomads as we cross the border going south!

I kinda prefer Jimmy Buffett's version, myself.

watizname - 12-10-2019 at 08:37 AM

One of the best adventure reports I've seen on here. Nothing like those Cortez sunrises when you're on the water. Still remember my first at Bay of LA nearly 40 years ago. Great video.

Howard is da man!

I don't like the part where he says:

I GUESS I'LL HAVE TO GO NOW
OOOOHHHHHH MEXICO
I'VE NEVER REALLY BEEN

Ruins the song for me. I mean, why the hell is he singing about Mexico if he's never been?

My Windrider 17

Mikey47 - 4-11-2020 at 08:04 AM

Hi Chuck. Great Video you guys. At young age of 73 bought my first boat, a Windrider 17. Brought it down 8mo ago as I’m building retirement casa near Todos Santos. My Mexican friend, Antonio, who also has a WR17 has been giving me sailing lessons in La Paz where I keep the boat pulled up on the beach at a tiny marina there for $80US a month. Plan on doing your trip this summer with Antonio. Thanks for posting. Mikey

Mulege Canuck - 4-11-2020 at 08:17 AM

You will love that boat Mikey. It is perfect for Baja.

I was surprised how well it points. I am planning on going from BOLA to Mulege next November.

Post a trip report when you head out.

Pacifico - 4-12-2020 at 10:49 AM

Wow! Great adventure trip! Did you guys go round trip or one way?

Mulege Canuck - 4-12-2020 at 11:10 AM

We doubled back from San Cosme and got picked up at Puerto Escondido by a friend with the trailer.

Fantastic trip for sure.

Loved your video. Brought me back to when I started cruising that area from San Carlos, Sonora in 1961 and took many more week long trips after that. Now have a place on Coyote Bay. It is as beautiful now as it was then, the remoteness makes it all possible. Thanks posting the video.

Hola Mikey

Did you go on that trip? I am missing Baja this year due to Covid. Sure could use a Baja hit. Share a report of your adventures

what a fantastic adventure...lots of great photos & video....skies, sunsets, rocks...loved the colourful rocks and that fig tree....thanks for posting this wonderful video....brings back memories of sailing a Folgers gunter rigged folding schooner in the San Juan Islands with no engine and beaching every night in a different cove.

Mulege Canuck - 5-17-2021 at 08:29 AM

3 miles SSW of Punta Pulpito

There must have been a fishing village there at one time. Nice spot.

The campsite is really nice. There is an overhanging rock you can put your tent under. Good snorkeling on the reef in front of it.

There had been a recent tropical storm when we were on the water. We had to hold up in San Basillo for 4 days waiting out the rain and lightning. There may not be water in that pool unless it has rained recently. That fresh water swim sure felt good at the time. There was a lot of Bighorn Sheep sign in the arroyo but we never saw any.

I do not know the name of the drainage.
