Testing Yamaha yxz1000r ss se

bajatrailrider - 1-4-2020 at 08:02 AM

I picked up the 2019 sxs week ago . So far very Happy and all my fears unfounded. Was worried that it has no low range in 4x4. It has 5 speed trans and paddle shifter and auto smart clutch. That was deal breaker for me not to buy Razor or can Am. As I don't like a rubber belt for drive line. I was also worried that the yxz would have a mind of it own shifting. Also since it has a top speed of 80 mph. It would not work at slow trail speed. Another thing of concern it has 3 cylinder engine V. All the others having. 2 cylinder engine. With yxz 2016 to 2018 built more as a racer little bottom end. Needing to rev it's brains out.. All my fears unfounded on 2019 with everything changed on this model. Redline is 10,500 it has more bottom end that I would ever need. From 1 mph to 35 mph you have shifted all five years. Are at 3500 to 4000 rpm with bottom end like a tractor. Trail riding in tight abandoned two tracking hill climbing. It rarely needs 4x4 or diff lock it has frt and rear diff locks. Going at 4 or 5 mph can easy use second gear so no low range not a problem. It is so over powered that no need for low range. The lady is already driving it enjoying it. Plans are for aluminum roof glass windshield. Roof rack spare tire mount. I will never be a 4 wheeler guy over dirt bikes. This toy adds to fun with other in town having them.

All the mods I mentioned I will Fab myself as all after market parts super expensive. Also store bought mods are not the way I want them. No mods to susp. or engine as does what I need stock

caj13 - 1-4-2020 at 04:05 PM

do you think the "roll cage" is sufficient? I've seen several sXs with the cage crushed (not the yamaha)

I just assume when I get one I'm going to have to fab up or buy and install a much more substantial cage ( I build custom cages in all of my racecars - so pretty overprotective about it)

bajatrailrider - 1-4-2020 at 06:18 PM

None of the SXS stock cage is good for rolling over. They make chrome molly cages right in my small town . Score approved on million dollar trucks. It is very inexpensive to have it done here. I don't race it only trail ride. Another way to look at it don't drive like a Idiot. because if you do the cage wont save you anyway;) Still your correct drive safe with a good made cage. The YXZ im sure cage just as bad as the rest.

del mar - 1-4-2020 at 06:40 PM

SXS's are so expensive only fat cats can afford em

bajatrailrider - 1-4-2020 at 07:07 PM

16,900 with 30 miles move over fat dog. The skinny dog moving in.

advrider - 1-4-2020 at 09:00 PM

Might have to leave the bike home next year and bring the SXS for a visit! I have the Polaris 1000 rock and trail addition and love it, amazing what these things will do. You are going to love running around in it!

bajatrailrider - 1-4-2020 at 09:16 PM

So far I do like it being your sxs and dirt bike . Also carry a pick axe on sxs . Some routes need little help.

advrider - 1-5-2020 at 08:12 AM

del mar, that cat looks like it ate a small dog or a fat rat!

bajatrailrider - 1-5-2020 at 08:54 AM

Adv what is your take on 2 seat v 4 seat. I was told 4 seat long WB better . For woops wide open runs 2 seat better trail machine. Shorter WB won't get hung up belly pan. It was a deal breaker for me to not but yxz as only two seater. After talking to large club Razors from Utah. They said for my use of trail and exploring rig . Get 2 seat in middle March 6 of us will do 5 to 6 day trip . Many razor 1000s and my yxz will see if my lady lasts longer then me:). My work cut out for me before trip . As I said glass windshield roof and rack on top. Spare tire and Fab swing away mount. Side mirrors

bajatrailrider - 1-5-2020 at 08:57 AM

DK I will send you pictures thank you for offer. As posting pictures here from my cl phone. Still a problem

Sounds good, Larry.
PS That looks like a fun vehicle... I would enjoy doing a run in one!

bajatrailrider - 1-5-2020 at 11:03 AM

David next Baja trip room for you . Take off on sxs run have abandoned routes. That are too narrow for 4x4 truck but doable in sxs. Not on any of your maps come and see. The real Baja history old roads. I have never seen tire track but my own.

Larry's Photos

Tobi with dog, following Anayelis (who is in the new sxs).

bajatrailrider - 1-8-2020 at 02:16 PM

thank you David . Im joining friends in March for 5 night trip SXSs. Any want to go will hotel it every night. So far 8 to 10 Razors Two YXZs I don't know if small 4X4 truck could make it. I will find if anybody interested I know more routes then leader so If some of the way he lets me go different way south. Im sure small 4x4 could make it.

advrider - 1-8-2020 at 02:33 PM

Larry, good to see you out having fun! I like the 4 seat for the room and ability to take some camping gear and extra stuff if you don't have people in the back. The 4 seat seems a little smoother in the fast stuff but the 2 seat will fit tighter trails and corners without a lot of backing up.
I've only had two seater and have been happy. My rock and trail edition only came in a two seat, so that it's what I have. I'll be down in March on the bike, so I won't have the SXS, but next year it looks like I will be retired and have a lot of time.

bajatrailrider - 1-8-2020 at 07:18 PM

Good to hear same info on 2seat V 4 seat. We do more tight stuff then open running. After I get roof done will build rack on top. Make it easy to remove as this big trip. Will take work to get this wheeler ready they all have race radios. I was given one so find a place to install it. Same deal yank it out after ride.

advrider - 1-8-2020 at 07:46 PM

Sounds like a good plan, I run the rugged radio. We all just have the handheld and they work fine. I have my spare mounted just below the roof line in the back so I can still just see under it.
Air compressor and a bunch of plugs, spare valve stims will take care of most flats. I always have a couple of ball joints and a tie rod ends, even though I've never needed them. I take a spare belt but you will ne a couple of u-joints. I always over maintain my rigs because I hate working on my stuff when I'm out having fun. You will be surprised how well these hold up. The rest is just about having fun.

ehall - 1-10-2020 at 09:37 AM

Those things look fun and I am sure your lady would appreciate a windshield. Can it carry an ice chest? I guess I need to get one eventually but looking at a new wr450 right now and it's too expensive.

Couple questions:

Are you planning on having a cage built (in your town)? Will a custom cage survive a roll over?

Where will you get a windshield?

Is the roof you're planning on for gear/gas? (I would think you don't want to be top heavy. Gear will effect center of gravity.)

$16,900. Where did you buy the yxz?

bajatrailrider - 1-10-2020 at 08:41 PM

Lee I bought it used 30 miles on it. As I said custom cage helmet 4 point . Drive like a Idiot nothing will save you. Only you can protect yourself just like your car. Drive safe no plans to have cage done now. I will make roof sheet 1/16 aluminum. I had a flat glass cut 41x14 laminated tinted auto glass. I will make frame 1/8in thick by 3in with auto rubber seal. As far as roof rack only gear bag with spare pants t shirts ect. Your right don't want top heavy. At some point chrome moly if he does mine. He will make a jig I will sell them in the states. No gas on roof or heavy stuff I need make spare tire rack on back too. His cages are score approved. I don't drive fast prefer to see the country. On our trails so far 37mph that's about it as turns rocks up down. No place to go any faster.

advrider - 1-10-2020 at 09:15 PM

Good plan, some guys add so much weight by adding all of the aftermarket junk. I will probably do a cage on mine but that about it. You can see my tool box from home depot and my ice chest in the back. Rocky mountain has a lot of stuff for SXS. Jack and lug wrench are mounted under the tire.
The alarm system is top of the line...Hope it was ok to post picture of mine in your thread? If not I can delete.

bajatrailrider - 1-11-2020 at 09:42 AM

Great pictures will help me do the few mods thank you. Nice looking rig what is wheels tires? Do you have any stock wheels Im told. !000razor is same as 19 only YXZ. Also told same bolt pattern need spare wheel. I already bought dealer take off .Brand new 4 YXZ tires 300 bucks figuring if I toast one. The 19 YXZ is 29in tires to mount the spare is a pain . Don't want it hi up. Don't want it blocking rear view mirror the Yamaha swing away mount all good. I will copy it make one your is more easy to load stuff in back. With your radiator in front mine in back. What is your take on Jack I will just buy small bottle jack. Also bought LT and RT side mirrors as center one . Not good backing up.

advrider - 1-11-2020 at 10:38 AM

My wheels are the stock bead lock wheels, that came with 29 inchx14 tires. I shredded one and went up to a 32 on the same wheels, they were Rocky mountain's own tire brand. They work really good. My rig came with 50% lower low range for rock crawling, it's really nice in the slow stuff. Mine also came stock with winch, bumper, skid plates (1/2 thick), harnesses and rock rails, high clearance a-arms . My spare cam from craiglist, there are ton's of wheels and tire there. Also check local shop for take off's.
A bottle jack will work but a good old scissor jack from a car is even better. Another trick is a tow strap over the cage and your buddy pulling just enough to tip the car up, but you need room for that.
I like the swing out tire mount as well, that way you can still get in the back to access your tools and ice chest. My radiator is in front, and the motor a little farther to the rear then center.
Mine is street legal with turn signals, mirrors and horn. Not street legal in California but Nevada, Arizona and Utah.

bajatrailrider - 1-11-2020 at 08:25 PM

I should receive my calif title in another week . Of course we don't need plates on SXS or motos or race truck on hiway baja. Sill I will plate it in South Dakota anything but Calif.

bajatrailrider - 1-11-2020 at 08:30 PM

As I said before even that this does not have low range like Razor for rock climb. First gear so slow im sure it would flip over backwards. At 5 mph not ready to find out. As it cant be good to get stuck at top of hill climb on this thing

Nice golf cart! Now that you are getting old and can’t handle the bike well anymore, that little go cart should be fun toy for you in your sunset years!

bajatrailrider - 1-11-2020 at 08:34 PM

Ahh but I ride the moto 3 days a week golf cart the other 3. Both of witch old Baja Blow Hard like yourself cant do.:):bounce::light: Ja JA JA nice try

advrider - 1-11-2020 at 09:36 PM

Not sure Larry will be hanging up the handlebars anytime soon, I've seen the stuff he rides! The nice thing with the SXS'S is that you get to take the wife and enjoy the trip together. My wife has back issues that make long days on the bike hard, but the SXS has such good suspension that you don't feel the bumps.
Having an ice chest, table and chairs makes lunch an enjoyable event, often we bring a BBQ and have a hot lunch. I also find that many more couples enjoy SXS'S, much like jeeps. The thing with SXS'S VS jeeps is the fact that you can run 30-50 miles an hour all day long where the jeep would be going 5-10 MPH because of the rough roads.
Goat you really should try it before you knock it! I'm not sure we would hit it off but I would offer to take you for a ride in an area of your choosing anytime. Larry keep moving in any direction on any machine and you will never get old!

bajatrailrider - 1-12-2020 at 09:42 AM

Riding motos number one. On long trips there is one big disadvantage with sxs. Most routes heading south out of my riding area. Forces you to get on hiway ,1 to connect dirt roads and trails. The razors and yxzs rev way too high on hiway. I know mine has 80 mph top speed . At close to 10.000 rpms for me sweet spot is 4000 rpm. That is only.going 40mph no way will I buzz this thing at 65mph. For long stretches I know my friends from rosarita. Wrap up there razors to the rev limiter on hiway. That I won't do just using fuel oil and shortens life of machine. Where my. dirt bike uses Street bike gearing. Or my Toyota off road truck can easy run 65 mph.

motoged - 1-12-2020 at 12:43 PM

A couple of years ago I was running Shari's Bufadora Inn for 6 weeks while she was guiding whale trips out of GN....and had the privilege of Malcolm Smith staying overnight while he was touring with his wife and another couple on 4 seater Can Am SXS's.

After the obligatory prostrations of adulation and a pic with Malcolm, I asked him how he liked 4 wheels under his scrawny butt. He said, "At first I thought I would hate it, but after 1/2 an hour of steering with the back wheels I loved it !" Well, if it's good enough for Malcolm, it's good enough for Trailrider et al.

Now, if Trailrider could just learn how to spell and use proper grammar.... ;)

del mar - 1-12-2020 at 12:52 PM

how ironic it would be a golfcart, a real golfcart that would put him in the hospital!

advrider - 1-12-2020 at 01:27 PM

I know what you are saying about the highway but we ran ours all over Moab on the highway at 60-70 and didn't feel like I was pushing it at all. Mine will do about 80 with the stock computer and 120 MPH with a re-flash that removes the factory limiter.
I run good synthetic oil and will change it sooner if I've been running it hard. I talked to the factory Polaris guys in Moab about running them at highway speeds for extended periods and they said no problem, but I get not wanting to do it.

bajatrailrider - 1-12-2020 at 08:07 PM

Ja ha adv rider did you ever look a your rpms. I have been in freinds 14. 1000 razor at 65 mph she is crying for mercy. Yes it goes faster but way too many no rpms.

advrider - 1-12-2020 at 08:33 PM

I would have to admit that I haven't, not sure I want to, lol... The 32 inch tires will help mine a little.

bajatrailrider - 1-12-2020 at 09:38 PM

Yes sir higher rpm shorter engine Life. Take mine red line tac 10500 rpm that is stressing the engine. At 4000 rpm long life my wr450 07 sold it 2014. 48,000 dirt miles never pulled the head off it . Always short shifted it of course on hill climb on it. If you drive your car at 65/70 mph v 125mph . You are stressing it shorter life.

John Harper - 1-13-2020 at 06:00 AM

Yes, higher RPM, higher piston feet of travel. More wear on everything.

John

advrider - 1-13-2020 at 08:39 AM

I'm guessing the higher RPM'S are harder on the machine, more heat and stress across the board. I think as with any machine it's finding some kind of balance and enjoying your rig.
When I built my jeep I added a second transfer case and low gearing for a final crawl ratio of 225-1. I watched guys with tall gearing just beating the snot of the their rigs, while bouncing off of the rev limiter. I can crawl along just off of idle if its real nasty. In that case the low RPM'S really are making a difference, I think it is less of an issue with new fuel injected motors? Do we have any engineers that can chime in?

[Edited on 1-14-2020 by advrider]

bajatrailrider - 1-13-2020 at 09:42 AM

I did run the yxz on hiway up to 65mph just few seconds. With 8psi in the 8 ply knobby tire's sounded like two fire engines

del mar - 1-13-2020 at 11:11 AM

I know zero about these SXS.....if these yamaha's don't use a belt what drives em?

bajatrailrider - 1-13-2020 at 12:50 PM

50 years of destroying cars motos. Truck's ATVs I'm a pro at what not to do. What does number one race bike Baja 1000 get After the race running at full throttle a new engine ?

bajatrailrider - 1-13-2020 at 12:53 PM

Quote: Originally posted by del mar

. Del Mar it has a transmission with 5 sp. The razor and canam use belt drive .from snow mobile

advrider - 1-13-2020 at 09:23 PM

Yep, the Yamaha is set up just like a car or truck with a drive line. If you drive a SXS with a belt smartly a belt will go many miles, I just changed mine at 1500 miles because I felt bad for going so long. Polaris say's every 500 miles but I've never felt the need or blown one. I have a spare on the car and can change one in about 15 minuets. .
I like the fact that the Yamaha has a drive line but for a lot of stuff I do like rock crawling and other slow stuff the Polaris works better. In the desert I thing the Yamaha is a top pick.

bajatrailrider - 6-25-2020 at 07:52 AM

Up dates on Yamaha sxs 1000 ss. Now have 2,000 off road miles. So far so good in between dirt bike riding . A gas to drive gets average 20 mpg. All hand made mods holding up well. Will need second oil change I do trans oil same time. It's a pain to service removing skid plates. Lady in house no longer will drive it. Happy with me driving all the time. As if she drives I don't use seat belt. So I can jump out :):)
