Do You Have Baja Fever?

David K - 9-14-2003 at 05:31 PM

For fun, and to try Nomad's poll... here is a partial list of items that may indicate you are sick with Baja Fever or are just a plain Baja Nut! Please reply with additional items you consider to be a sign of Baja Fever.

Do you have Baja Fever?

thebajarunner - 9-14-2003 at 08:33 PM

David,
How about permanent cactus scratches down the side of your travelling vehicle (no matter how pristine it otherwise may be) plus a few serious bumper nicks.
Oh yes, and a clear memory of where and when each occurred.

reefrocket - 9-14-2003 at 10:08 PM

DK hows come I's kin only vote for 1!:(

Diklang - 9-14-2003 at 11:09 PM

We'll be in BOLA on the 7th of Oct. We'll be in Campo Gecko in the palapa next to Beach Bob's. If anyone is coming down after the Gonzaga thing, stop in for a cerveza. Look for the silver Tundra.

Pretty shallow choices...

Tucker - 9-15-2003 at 12:32 PM

doesn't living on the peninsula count for anything?

David K - 9-15-2003 at 06:11 PM

Yes Tucker, I originally had 9 choices. But, it only let me post 5 as it bunched the last 5 questions all in line #5.
Doug, it says up to 10 questions. Also, can we have multiple choice?

Living in Baja (for a gringo) has to rate high for having Baja Fever... I agree Tucker.

Sure.... but (as an example) by making choice E being A, B, & C above... and choice G being all the above, etc.

J.R.'s CDs

David K - 9-17-2003 at 06:12 PM

Hi J.R., I believe I answered your CD question last time you asked... Perhaps got buried in a thread. The CDs were not working/showing anything. However, my computer is being rebuilt with a bigger hard drive (40 or more gigs vs. just 4) and mother board (Pentium 4 vs. 2). I will try your CDs again when I get my pc back... I am using WebTV for Internet and email. Let's cross our fingers that all your photos are still in there! DK

Actually David, you said you had no luck but were going to give them to or talk to some computer geniuses that you know. Nevertheless, I appreciate your help with this and hopefully, your new stuff will get them open. Good pictures of remote areas and all. Gracias amigo.

Baja Fever?

capn.sharky - 9-17-2003 at 09:02 PM

David K - 9-17-2003 at 11:34 PM

Yes Sharky, 'Baja Fever' that disease most here have that infects one's total future to just keep returning to Baja, again and again... Or, moving to Baja!

Greg Niemann wrote a book about it.... see http://www.bajafever.com/indexbf.html

AAAAHHHHH!! BAJA

Capt. George - 9-18-2003 at 04:12 AM

sixteen days and 1500 miles of exploring was all it took....I know have a lot in Loreto....we'll be there October through May, start looking into building. Staying at 24 calle Davis this coming winter, see you all there.....George & Deborah

Sorry David

capn.sharky - 9-18-2003 at 07:39 AM

I screwed up above. Baja Fever? No, I got no stinkin' fever. I got Baja Cancer. I spend at least 10 hours a day thinking about Loreto when I am not there....and its getting worse. I find myself comparing things here in So. Cal. with how much better things are down there. For instance traffic and pan and fishing. I have tried seeing a shrink, he said it was hopeless and that I should just move down permanently. However, the little woman says she won't move to Loreto until they put in a Nordstroms Dept. store. I figgure she is good for about another 300 years. My garage is full of crap that I take down to the needy. It is so full, that we could never sell the house.....unless we burn the garage down first. No, I don't have the fever---I need to go to Baja Anonamous and try to get cured. I put off my heart surgery until July and August so I could get it done during the really hot months when I stay here in So. Cal. and damn near ruined the mitro valve in doing so. My screen savers are always pictures of Baja. I can't figgure out why I come home---except to visit mama....and see my cardiologists.

Ya Gimme Fever

Capt. George - 9-18-2003 at 09:55 AM

Sharky,

Perhaps when you're in Loreto we can go to counseling together! Adios.

OMG... I've got to have some feature like "Post of the Week"... or something along those lines... this one absolutely cracks me up....

Sharky... MY GARAGE IS THE SAME -- and for the same reason!!!! ...and it's really piled up because of few trips in the recent past....

Here's my John Steinbeck excerpt (at: http://www.escapist.com/baja ), from "Log from the Sea of Cortez":

"Some quality there is in the whole Gulf that trips a trigger of recognition so that in fantastic and exotic scenery one finds oneself nodding and saying inwardly, 'Yes, I know.' And on the shore the wild doves mourn in the evening and then there comes a pang, some kind of emotional jar, and a longing. And if one followed his whispering impulse he would walk away slowly into the thorny brush following the call of the doves. Trying to remember the Gulf is like trying to re-create a dream. This is by no means a sentimental thing, it has little to do with beauty or even conscious liking. But the Gulf does draw one, and we have talked to rich men who own boats, who can go where they will. Regularly they find themselves sucked into the Gulf. And since we have returned, there is always in the backs of our minds the positive drive to go back again. If it were lush and rich, one could understand the pull, but it is fierce and hostile and sullen. The stone mountains pile up to the sky and there is little fresh water. But we know we must go back if we live, and we don't know why."

Mike Humfreville - 9-21-2003 at 12:58 AM

I think what he might have been describing was a varience in backgrounds. Many of us love Baja because it "wakes you up to reality," maybe someone else's, not our own, but it's the change many love. A rich man is bored with his protections and services. How will he know he is alive? A unique stand-alone man?? By facing an unknown, an angry sea, a barren desert. When we grow comfortable in one society we find another where we can fit a select pattern we need, for one reason or another.
